1. Revealing the Joint Mechanisms in Traditional Data Linked With Big Data.
PMID:日期:2019-02-22Recent technological advances have made it possible to study human behavior by linking novel types of data to more traditional types of psychological data, for example, linking psychological questionnaire data with genetic risk scores. Revealing the variables that are linked throughout these traditional and novel types of data gives crucial insight into the complex interplay between the multiple factors that determine human behavior, for example, the concerted action of genes and environment in the emergence of depression. Little or no theory is available on the link between such traditional and novel types of data, the latter usually consisting of a huge number of variables. The challenge is to select - in an automated way - those variables that are linked throughout the different blocks, and this eludes currently available methods for data analysis. To fill the methodological gap, we here present a novel data integration method.

2. Belief and Counterfactuality: A Teleological Theory of Belief Attribution.
PMID:日期:2018-03-14The development and relation of counterfactual reasoning and false belief understanding were examined in 3- to 7-year-old children ( = 75) and adult controls ( = 14). The key question was whether false belief understanding engages counterfactual reasoning to infer what somebody else falsely believes. Findings revealed a strong correlation between false belief and counterfactual questions even in conditions in which children could commit errors other than the reality bias ( = .51). The data suggest that mastery of belief attribution and counterfactual reasoning is not limited to one point in development but rather develops over a longer period. Moreover, the rare occurrence of reality errors calls into question whether young children's errors in the classic false belief task are indeed the result of a failure to inhibit what they know to be actually the case. The data speak in favor of a teleological theory of belief attribution and challenges established theories of belief attribution.

3. Misunderstanding RDoC.
PMID:日期:2017-11-30Mental illness is fundamentally mental, by definition about psychological rather than biological phenomena, but biological phenomena play key roles in understanding, preventing, and treating mental illness. The Research Domain Criteria initiative (RDoC) of the US National Institute of Mental Health is an unusually ambitious effort to foster integration of psychological and biological science in the service of psychopathology research. Some key features and common misunderstandings of RDoC are discussed here.

4. Prosocial Consequences of Interpersonal Synchrony: A Meta-Analysis.
PMID:日期:2016-10-28The capacity to establish interpersonal synchrony is fundamental to human beings because it constitutes the basis for social connection and understanding. Interpersonal synchrony refers to instances when the movements or sensations of two or more people overlap in time and form. Recently, the causal influence of interpersonal synchrony on prosociality has been established through experiments. The current meta-analysis is the first to synthesize these isolated and sometimes contradictory experiments. We meta-analyzed 60 published and unpublished experiments that compared an interpersonal synchrony condition with at least one control condition. The results reveal a medium effect of interpersonal synchrony on prosociality with regard to both attitudes and behaviors. Furthermore, experimenter effects and intentionality moderate these effects. We discuss the strengths and limitations of our analysis, as well as its practical implications, and we suggest avenues for future research.

6. Reevaluating the placebo effect in medical practice.
PMID:日期:2014Recent findings on placebo research corroborate the evidence that the placebo effect represents a promising model to shed new light on the brain-mind-body interactions. In particular, this research has partially elucidated the role of how patients' expectations and the quality of physician-patient communication can influence the efficacy of interventions and overall clinical outcomes. Accordingly, the study of the placebo effect should be incorporated in the core clinical practice curriculum of all health practitioners. While the growing knowledge of the placebo effect points to it as an irreducible primary reality of the medical sciences, an ethical analysis aimed at avoiding the misuse of placebos is needed, while maximizing the opportunity for beneficial placebo effects.

7. Antidepressants and the Placebo Effect.
PMID:日期:2014Antidepressants are supposed to work by fixing a chemical imbalance, specifically, a lack of serotonin in the brain. Indeed, their supposed effectiveness is the primary evidence for the chemical imbalance theory. But analyses of the published data and the unpublished data that were hidden by drug companies reveals that most (if not all) of the benefits are due to the placebo effect. Some antidepressants increase serotonin levels, some decrease it, and some have no effect at all on serotonin. Nevertheless, they all show the same therapeutic benefit. Even the small statistical difference between antidepressants and placebos may be an enhanced placebo effect, due to the fact that most patients and doctors in clinical trials successfully break blind. The serotonin theory is as close as any theory in the history of science to having been proved wrong. Instead of curing depression, popular antidepressants may induce a biological vulnerability making people more likely to become depressed in the future.

8. The Ecology of Sustainable Implementation: Reflection on a 10-Year Case History Illustration.
PMID:日期:2014The primary aim of this paper is to illustrate the strategic and ecological nature of implementation. The ultimate aim of implementation is not dissemination but sustainability beyond the implementation effort. A case study is utilized to illustrate these broad and long-term perspectives of sustainable implementation based on qualitative analyses of a 10-year implementation effort. The purveyors aimed to develop selective community prevention services for children in families burdened by parental psychiatric or addictive problems. Services were gradually disseminated to 23 sites serving 40 municipalities by 2013. Up to 2013, only one site terminated services after initial implementation. Although many sites suspended services for shorter periods, services are still offered at 22 sites. This case analysis is based on project reports, user evaluations, practitioner interviews, and service statistics. The paper focuses on the analyses and strategies utilized to cope with quality decay and setbacks as well as progress and success in disseminating and sustaining the services and their quality. Low-cost multilevel strategies to implement services at the community level were organized by a prevention unit in child psychiatry, supervised by a university department (purveyors). The purveyors were also involved in national and international collaboration and development. Multilevel strategies included manualized intervention, in-practice training methods, organizational responsibility, media strategies, service evaluation, staff motivation maintenance, quality assurance, and proposals for new law regulations. These case history aspects will be discussed in relation to the implementation literature, focusing on possible applicability across settings.

9. Exergaming in Youth: Effects on Physical and Cognitive Health.
PMID:日期:2013-04-01Exergaming (a portmanteau of "exercise" and "gaming") is a relatively new genre of interactive video gaming that stimulates an active, whole-body gaming experience. Exergaming could have a significant positive impact on youth as across the globe youth are living more sedentary lifestyles. Exergaming has the potential to thwart this trend by engaging youth in physical activity (PA). Exergaming is not only physically-engaging but is also cognitively-engaging, and this combination of physical and cognitive engagement may translate into improved cognitive function in youth. The purpose of this review article is to examine the state-of-the-art in exergaming research to address whether exergames are a viable tool to promote PA in youth and benefit cognitive functioning among youth. The research addressing these questions is still quite nascent; therefore, only tentative conclusions can be drawn. However, this review points out promising lines of research and makes suggestions for future research to obtain more firm conclusions.

10. Does Gender Matter in Grant Peer Review?: An Empirical Investigation Using the Example of the Austrian Science Fund.
PMID:日期:2012One of the most frequently voiced criticisms of the peer review process is gender bias. In this study we evaluated the grant peer review process (external reviewers' ratings, and board of trustees' final decision: approval or no approval for funding) at the Austrian Science Fund with respect to gender. The data consisted of 8,496 research proposals (census) across all disciplines from 1999 to 2009, which were rated on a scale from 1 to 100 (poor to excellent) by 18,357 external reviewers in 23,977 reviews. In line with the current state of research, we found that the final decision was not associated with applicant's gender or with any correspondence between gender of applicants and reviewers. However, the decisions on the grant applications showed a robust female reviewer salience effect. The approval probability decreases (up to 10%), when there is parity or a majority of women in the group of reviewers. Our results confirm an overall gender null hypothesis for the peer review process of men's and women's grant applications in contrast to claims that women's grants are systematically downrated.
