1. A dynamic micro-macro-economic model to assess water charging policies.
1. 评估水费政策的动态微观-宏观经济模型PMID:日期:2026-03-01This paper presents an integrated and dynamic coupling of micro- and macro-economic models for water resources management. As compared to conventional static micro-macro-economic coupling designs, the dynamic coupling produces time-variant assessments of endogenous (e.g., dynamics and impacts of capital accumulation) and exogenous variables (e.g., impacts of policy shifts or market trends over time). Methods are illustrated with an application to the Castile and León Region in Spain, where we: 1) assess the performance of two hypothetical water charging policies (one-time charge adjustment v. Incremental charges), and 2) compare the simulation results obtained with the proposed dynamic coupling to those obtained using two conventional static models. A key finding is that simulations under the dynamic coupling attribute lower effectiveness to water charges in reducing water use over time: 47% and -24% (dynamic coupling) water use change at the beginning and end of the simulation period vs. -46% (static coupling). Additionally, an incremental water charge has a greater economic impact than a one-time adjustment, resulting in a peak profit reduction of -8.9% compared to -5.9% under the one-time charge. Our results highlight the relevance of accounting for dynamic micro-macro-economic dynamic feedback in water policy design.

2. Designing cost-effective supply chains for plastics at the end-of-life.
2. 为报废塑料设计具有成本效益的供应链PMID:日期:2025-04-10Increased global plastic consumption and production boosted the amount of end-of-life (EoL) plastic. Also, 90 % of plastic EoL is either landfilled or incinerated. These unsustainable EoL pathways impact the environment and human health and waste valuable materials. Thus, improvements to the existing recycling infrastructure for sustainable plastic management are needed to enhance plastic circularity. Therefore, this contribution addresses optimizing cost-effective pathways for plastic recycling within the supply chain. The research uses mathematical optimization and the P-graph theoretical framework to calculate recycling costs, encompassing both capital expenditure and operational expenditure for various pathways of plastic recycling. The proposed methodology is applied through a detailed case study in Miskolc, Hungary, revealing estimated recycling costs ranging from 54.9 to 59.28 EUR/ton. This finding provides crucial insights into the economic implications of diverse recycling methods. Also, the study highlights the P-graph model's untapped potential as a resource for decision-makers in plastic recycling, particularly the enumeration of options for further consideration. The work's utility and novelty lie in the model's capability to design cost-effective pathways, offering a tangible contribution to the plastic recycling supply chain. Finally, this contribution offers economic solutions needed to ensure cost-effective sustainable plastic management solutions.

3. Removal of Sulfamethoxazole Using Fe-Mn Biochar Filtration Columns: Influence of Co-existing Polystyrene Microplastics.
3. 使用Fe-Mn生物炭过滤柱去除磺胺甲噁唑:共存聚苯乙烯微塑料的影响PMID:日期:2024-10-20Emerging contaminants, particularly antibiotics and microplastics (MPs), present significant challenges in wastewater treatment and pose large ecological risks. This study investigates the removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) using Fe-Mn modified biochar (BFM) in fixed bed filtration columns, emphasizing the effect of the presence of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on SMX behavior in both water (pH≈5.6) and selected wastewater (pH≈8) systems. Batch sorption results show that 10 mg/L SMX in 50 mL water can be completely removed by 100 mg BFM sorbent. The Bed Depth Service Time model indicated the BFM column is feasible for SMX removal in scaled-up continuous wastewater flow operations, while the Yan model best elucidates SMX filtration behavior and suggests the dominant adsorption mechanisms include external mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion. The present of both 20 mg/L and 100 mg/L PS-MPs (pH≈5.6) significantly reduced SMX retention due to competitive sorption. However, at pH 3.2, competitive sorption became negligible due to electrostatic interactions driving the PS-MPs sorption, while neutral charged SMX bound through hydrogen-bonds or π-π EDA interactions. Elevated pH shifted both PS-MPs and SMX sorption to non-electrostatic thus intensifying sorption competition, highlighting the influence of pH on their interaction dynamics. In wastewater, SMX filtration was slightly inhibited by 100 mg/L PS-MPs in BFM columns, whereas PS-MPs removal remained unaffected due to the high ionic strength and alkaline pH. These findings highlight the impact of MPs on pollution removal efficiency in filtration system, essential for enhancing biochar-based wastewater treatment strategies.

4. The manufacturing process and consequent occupational health and environmental risks associated with the use of plastic waste in construction bricks in small-scale recycling plants.
PMID:日期:2024-09-28The rapid escalation of plastic production has prompted researchers to seek innovative and sustainable methods for recycling plastic waste to prevent its accumulation in landfills and mitigate its adverse effects on the environment and human health. One way is by incorporating plastic waste into construction materials. This study imparts a review on the application of plastic waste in the production of construction bricks through mechanical recycling processes, with a specific focus on compiling information on the manufacturing process as well as identifying potential emissions, occupational health hazards, and environmental risks. Through a review of 100 existing empirical studies, including those available in open-access journals specifically relevant to the study's focus, it became evident that there is limited research investigating the emissions, occupational health impacts, and environmental risks associated with the production of bricks from plastic waste. Due to this information gap, the study extrapolated health risks and environmental impacts from comparable mechanical recycling processes. Our findings indicated that the manufacturing process, which consists of plastic collection, sorting, washing, drying, shredding, melting or extrusion, cooling, and molding, is likely to emit several air pollutants, including but not limited to heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds. Individuals involved in the production of plastic-waste bricks likely face a heightened risk of adverse health outcomes, particularly in settings where appropriate safety measures and control mechanisms are lacking. While the scientific literature currently offers a limited examination of the environmental impacts stemming from these pollutants, the research identified significant concerns related to microplastic presence in wastewater and heavy metal contamination in nearby soil and sediments. This study recommends that small-scale recycling operations mandate the use of personal protective equipment, implement adequate control strategies such as general and local ventilation systems, and prioritize the recycling of plastics known to pose minimal risks to human health. There is a pressing need for further research to accurately characterize the emissions produced during the manufacturing process and to comprehensively evaluate the consequent health and environmental hazards.

5. Estimating national sludge generation and disposal from US drinking water and wastewater treatment plants.
5. 估算美国饮用水和废水处理厂的国家污泥产生与处置情况PMID:日期:2024-06-10In the United States (U.S.), the management of sludges generated from drinking water and wastewater treatment are overseen by the state agencies and much of that information, especially quantities incinerated or landfilled, are not communicated to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA). Instead, estimates of beneficial use or disposal of sludges have been periodically quantified through time- and resource-intensive surveys of facility operators. Simple methods to estimate annual sludge generation and disposal, informed by publicly available state-level data, were developed. The generation of drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) sludge was estimated using water supply data and a sludge generation factor (SGF) based on existing literature. A process-averaged SGF, 1.3% as wet-weight per gallons treated, resulted in 35-40 mmt dw sludge/year from 2000 to 2015, yielding 150 kg DWTP sludge dw/person-year. Based on publicly available data from 15 states, WWTP sludge was approximately 1-2% of landfilled waste composition. State-level data regarding the (1) generation or (2) disposal of municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludges were used to extrapolate national estimates. From 2010 to 2020, the US generated (1) 7.5-6.8 or (2) 7.9-7.1 mmt dw WWTP sludge/year. National figures for WWTP sludge incineration could not be estimated based on limited data. The development of transparent and simple estimation methods that utilize publicly-available data will help improve generation, disposal, and recycling estimates at the national level.

6. The fate of rice crop residues and context-dependent greenhouse gas emissions: Model-based insights from Eastern India.
PMID:日期:2024-01-05Crop residue burning is a common practice in many parts of the world that causes air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Regenerative practices that return residues to the soil offer a 'no burn' pathway for addressing air pollution while building soil organic carbon (SOC). Nevertheless, GHG emissions in rice-based agricultural systems are complex and difficult to anticipate, particularly in production contexts with highly variable hydrologic conditions. Here we predict long-term net GHG fluxes for four rice residue management strategies in the context of rice-wheat cropping systems in Eastern India: burning, soil incorporation, livestock fodder, and biochar. Estimations were based on a combination of Tier 1, 2, and 3 modelling approaches, including 100-year DNDC simulations across three representative soil hydrologic categories (i.e., dry, median, and wet). Overall, residue burning resulted in total direct GHG fluxes of 2.5, 6.1, and 8.7 Mg CO-e in the dry, median, and wet hydrologic categories, respectively. Relative to emissions from burning (positive values indicate an increase) for the same dry to wet hydrologic categories, soil incorporation resulted in a -0.2, 1.8, or 3.1 Mg CO-e change in emissions whereas use of residues for livestock fodder increased emissions by 2.0, 2.1, or 2.3 Mg CO-e. Biochar reduced emissions relative to burning by 2.9 Mg CO-e in all hydrologic categories. This study showed that the production environment has a controlling effect on methane and, therefore, net GHG balance. For example, wetter sites had 2.8-4.0 times greater CH emissions, on average, than dry sites when rice residues were returned to the soil. To effectively mitigate burning without undermining climate change mitigation goals, our results suggest that geographically-target approaches should be used in the rice-based systems of Eastern India to incentivize the adoption of regenerative 'no burn' residue management practices.

7. Understanding the trade-offs of national municipal solid waste estimation methods for circular economy policy.
PMID:日期:2023-08Policies embracing circular economy concepts have taken hold in national legislation around the world. As the number of governments and organizations adopting circular economy policies increases, so does the need for accurate and timely measurement of material resource flows. Since many countries do not have access to centrally reported municipal solid waste (MSW) data, estimation and modeling are critical in evaluating circular economy policy effectiveness. The purpose of this paper is to examine three modeling approaches estimating national MSW data in the United States, including industry-based material flow analysis, waste-extended input-output modeling, and aggregated regional waste reporting. We establish five criteria to guide the analysis through the context of policy monitoring (data quality, flow totality, update frequency, sensitivity to disruption, and product granularity) and use these criteria to analyze and score each model. We then use a literature search to identify five, internationally-implemented options for circular economy policy and determine the data and modeling components that are most helpful in evaluating policy effectiveness. Finally, we provide a crosswalk of the model scores and policy needs to inform the suitability of model selection by policy type. We found that data quality and update frequency are identified as critical components for evaluating circular economy policies within the models evaluated, and can both be fulfilled by aggregated regional waste reporting. Flow totality, sensitivity to disruption, and product granularity requirements vary by both model and policy types. While none of the evaluated models satisfy the combination of requirements for any of the five policies, industry-based material flow analysis offers flow totality for extended producer responsibility, landfill bans, and recycling rate target policies that typically require it. The waste-extended input-output model can provide disruption sensitivity and product granularity as needed for policies like minimum recycled content and market restrictions. Policy developers in areas where strong centralized data collection is not an option should design policy action(s) with modeling tradeoffs in mind, including the potential hybridization of modeling approaches that may provide the most accurate national MSW estimates.

8. Exploring resilience in public services within marginalised communities during COVID-19: The case of coal mining regions in Colombia.
PMID:日期:2023-06-22This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 on marginalised communities and its effects on the provision of public services. Focusing on two coal mining regions in Colombia during the pandemic crisis, and examining Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities, we analyze the provision of public services at a local level, identifying both shortcomings and resilience. Findings show that the lack of resilient public services amplified the effects of COVID-19 and its containment measures, exacerbating existing structural inequalities within local marginalised communities. It also reinforced the control exercised by coal mining companies within local economies. However, the substantial lack of public service provision also provided space for the development and strengthening of several resilience strategies among local communities, such as solidarity networks and schemes and the revitalization of local environmental knowledge. The study identifies multiple shortcomings in how the national and local administrations handled the COVID-19 outbreak and highlights the potential of enhancing resilience in public services to support marginalised communities in times of crisis.

9. Who is open to change after the COVID-19 pandemic? Some insights from Germany.
PMID:日期:2023-06-16The COVID-19 pandemic as a disruptive event was initially considered an opportunity for a transformation towards more sustainable lifestyles. In two telephone surveys with more than 1000 participants each, this study explored in October 2020 and May 2021 how people in Germany experienced the COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions. Specifically, the study investigated how the respondents felt their lives had been impaired during the pandemic, which changes they had experienced as particularly bothersome and which ones they perceived to be beneficial. A second objective was to analyze how these perceptions related to either the respondents' urge to return to "normal" or, in contrast, to their openness towards lifestyle changes. A third objective was to identify structural characteristics that would explain differences in perception and assessment of lifestyle changes. Overall, the study found that by 2021, the pandemic had impacted people more negatively than in 2020. Most respondents missed social contacts, traveling and cultural events. Among the positive changes, working from home and spending less money for useless things were particularly prominent. A third of the participants agreed that they would like to question their behavior before the pandemic and live more consciously. Apart from slight differences in gender, age and, most importantly, academic background, socio-economic characteristics hardly help explain why some people were more open to change than others. Therefore, a cluster analysis was conducted with the result that respondents with stronger pro-environmental attitudes were more open to change, no matter how much they felt affected by the pandemic. These findings indicate that when routines are disrupted, pro-environmental personal values and education contribute to the openness for alternative lifestyle choices.

10. Spatiotemporal characteristics and co-effects of air quality and carbon dioxide emissions changes during the COVID-19 epidemic lockdown measures in China.
PMID:日期:2023-06-07The COVID-19 pandemic prompted several nations, including China, to enact unprecedented lockdown measures, leading to significant alterations in environmental conditions. Previous studies have solely analysed the impact of lockdown measures on air pollutants or carbon dioxide (CO) emissions during the COVID-19 pandemic in China, but few have focused on the spatio-temporal change characteristics and synergistic effects between the two. In this study, we constructed a methodological framework to examine the spatiotemporal characteristics and co-effects of air quality (PM, SO, and NO) and CO changes in 324 prefecture-level cities in China due to the COVID-19 blockade measures from January 24 to April 30, 2020, using the regression discontinuity in time method and co-effect control coordinate system. The results show that a significant improvement in air quality and CO emissions during the lockdown period, with notable north‒south heterogeneity. During the major lockdown period (January 24 to February 29), the measures resulted in respective reductions of 5.6%, 16.6%, and 25.1% in the concentrations of SO, NO, and CO nationwide. The proportions of cities with negative treatment effects on PM, SO, NO, and CO were 39.20%, 70.99%, 84.6%, and 99.38%, respectively. Provinces where concentrations of CO and NO declined by over 30% were primarily concentrated in southern areas of the 'Yangtze River Defense Line'. Starting from March, the improvement effect of air quality and CO has weakened, and the concentration of air pollutants has rebounded. This study offers crucial insights into the causal effects of lockdown measures on air quality changes, and reveals the synergy between air quality and CO, thereby providing a reference for devising effective air quality improvement and energy-saving emission reduction strategies.
