1. Review and outlook of global energy use under the impact of COVID-19.
PMID:日期:2022-11-06By collecting and sorting the energy demand data of developing and developed countries, this paper makes a comprehensive analysis of their energy demand, including the change of energy demand and the change trend of energy load in various sectors. The survey scope of the article includes the overall change trend of energy supply, natural gas, oil, electricity, coal, renewable energy (such as wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, tidal energy, etc.), and the data change of global carbon dioxide emission. Besides, this paper selects a variety of energy sources for comprehensive analysis to analyze the existing change trend in chronological order. The analysis methods include data statistics of primary energy production and consumption, energy intensity analysis of gross domestic product (GDP), production, and demand balance of oil, natural gas, and coal, and study the trade balance between different types of energy in different countries and regions. The regions examined in this review include the organization for economic cooperation and development (OECD); the group of seven (G7); Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICs); the European Union; Europe; North America; the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS); Asia; Latin America; the Pacific Ocean; the Middle East and Africa. By studying these data, we can make a better summary of the current energy use, so as to conveniently grasp the context of energy development and have a general understanding of the current energy structure. Therefore, individuals and policymakers in the fields of energy trade can think more deeply about the future situation and draw conclusions.

2. Evaluating vacant middle seats and masks as Coronavirus exposure reduction strategies in aircraft cabins using particle tracer experiments and computational fluid dynamics simulations.
PMID:日期:2022-11-05Aircraft cabins have high-performance ventilation systems, yet typically hold many persons in close proximity for long durations. The current study estimated airborne virus exposure and infection reductions when middle seats are vacant compared to full occupancy and when passengers wear surgical masks in aircraft. Tracer particle data reported by U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) and CFD simulations reported by Boeing were used along with NIOSH data, to build nonlinear regression models with particle exposure and distance from particle source as variables. These models that estimate exposure at given distances from the viral source were applied to evaluate exposure reductions from vacant middle seats. Reductions averaged 54% for the seat row where an infectious passenger is located and 36% for a 24-row cabin containing one infectious passenger, with middle seats vacant. Analysis of the TRANSCOM data showed that universal masking (surgical masks) reduced exposures by 62% and showed masking and physical distancing provide further reductions when practiced together. For a notional scenario involving 10 infectious passengers, compared with no intervention, masking, distancing, and both would prevent 6.2, 3.8, and 7.6 secondary infections, respectively, using the Wells-Riley equation. These results suggest distancing alone, masking alone, and these practiced together reduce SARS CoV-2 exposure risk in increasing order of effectiveness, when an infectious passenger is present.

3. Leveraging machine learning to analyze sentiment from COVID-19 tweets: A global perspective.
PMID:日期:2022-09-18Since the advent of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, analyzing public sentiment has become one of the major concerns for policy and decision-makers. While the priority is to curb the spread of the virus, mass population (user) sentiment analysis is equally important. Though sentiment analysis using different state-of-the-art technologies has been focused on during the COVID-19 pandemic, the reasons behind the variations in public sentiment are yet to be explored. Moreover, how user sentiment varies due to the COVID-19 pandemic from a cross-country perspective has been less focused on. Therefore, the objectives of this study are: to identify the most effective machine learning (ML) technique for classifying public sentiments, to analyze the variations of public sentiment across the globe, and to find the critical contributing factors to sentiment variations. To attain the objectives, 12,000 tweets, 3000 each from the USA, UK, and Bangladesh, were rigorously annotated by three independent reviewers. Based on the labeled tweets, four different boosting ML models, namely, CatBoost, gradient boost, AdaBoost, and XGBoost, are investigated. Next, the top performed ML model predicted sentiment of 300,000 data (100,000 from each country). The public perceptions have been analyzed based on the labeled data. As an outcome, the CatBoost model showed the highest (85.8%) F1-score, followed by gradient boost (84.3%), AdaBoost (78.9%), and XGBoost (83.1%). Second, it was revealed that during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sentiments of the people of the three countries mainly were negative, followed by positive and neutral. Finally, this study identified a few critical concerns that impact primarily varying public sentiment around the globe: lockdown, quarantine, hospital, mask, vaccine, and the like.

4. Epidemic trend analysis of SARS-CoV-2 in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries using modified susceptible-infected-recovered predictive model.
PMID:日期:2022-07-10A novel coronavirus causing the severe and fatal respiratory syndrome was identified in China, is now producing outbreaks in more than 200 countries around the world, and became pandemic by the time. In this article, a modified version of the well-known mathematical epidemic model susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) is used to analyze the epidemic's course of COVID-19 in eight different countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). To achieve this goal, the parameters of the SIR model are identified by using publicly available data for the corresponding countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Based on the prediction model, we estimated the epidemic trend of COVID-19 outbreak in SAARC countries for 20, 90, and 180 days, respectively. A short-mid-long term prediction model has been designed to understand the early dynamics of the COVID-19 epidemic in the southeast Asian region. The maximum and minimum basic reproduction numbers ( = 1.33 and 1.07) for SAARC countries are predicted to be in Pakistan and Bhutan. We equate simulation results with real data in the SAARC countries on the COVID-19 outbreak, and predicted different scenarios using the modified SIR prediction model. Our results should provide policymakers with a method for evaluating the impacts of possible interventions, including lockdown and social distancing, as well as testing and contact tracking.

5. COVID-19 and black fungus: Analysis of the public perceptions through machine learning.
PMID:日期:2021-11-14While COVID-19 is ravaging the lives of millions of people across the globe, a second pandemic "black fungus" has surfaced robbing people of their lives especially people who are recovering from coronavirus. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze public perceptions through sentiment analysis regarding black fungus during the COVID-19 pandemic. To attain the objective, first, a support vector machine (SVM) model, with an average AUC of 82.75%, was developed to classify user sentiments in terms of anger, fear, joy, and sad. Next, this SVM model was used to predict the class labels of the public tweets ( = 6477) related to COVID-19 and black fungus. As outcome, this article found public perceptions towards black fungus during COVID-19 pandemic belong mostly to sad (= 2370, 36.59%), followed by joy ( = 2095, 32.34%), fear ( = 1914, 29.55%) and anger ( = 98, 1.51%). This article also found that public perceptions are varied to some critical concerns like education, lockdown, hospital, oxygen, quarantine, and vaccine. For example, people mostly exhibited fear in social media about education, hospital, vaccine while some people expressed joy about education, hospital, vaccine, and oxygen. Again, it was found that mass people have an ignorance tendency to lockdown, COVID-19 restrictions, and prescribed hygiene rules although the coronavirus and black fungus infection rates broke the previous infection records.

6. Potential applications of peptide nucleic acid in biomedical domain.
PMID:日期:2020-07-24Peptide Nucleic Acid (PNA) are DNA/RNA synthetic analogs with 2-([2-aminoethyl] amino) acetic acid backbone. They partake unique antisense and antigene properties, just due to its inhibitory effect on transcription and translation; they also undergo complementary binding to RNA/DNA with high affinity and specificity. Hence, to date, many methods utilizing PNA for diagnosis and treatment of various diseases namely cancer, AIDS, human papillomavirus, and so on, have been designed and developed. They are being used widely in polymerase chain reaction modulation/mutation, fluorescent in-situ hybridization, and in microarray as a probe; they are also utilized in many in-vitro and in-vivo assays and for developing micro and nano-sized biosensor/chip/array technologies. Earlier reviews, focused only on PNA properties, structure, and modifications related to diagnostics and therapeutics; our review emphasizes on PNA properties and synthesis along with its potential applications in diagnosis and therapeutics. Furthermore, prospects in biomedical applications of PNAs are being discussed in depth.

7. {"_":"Prolonged culture in aerobic environments alters H production capacity.","i":["Escherichia coli"],"sub":["2"]}
PMID:日期:2020-04-30Growing interest in renewable energy continues to motivate new work on microbial biohydrogen production and in particular utilizing a well-studied, facultative anaerobe. Here we characterize, for the first time the H production rate and capacity, of isolates from the 50 000th generation of the Long-Term Evolution Experiment. Under these reaction conditions, peak production rates near or above 5 mL per hour for 100 mL of lysogeny broth (LB media) was established for the ancestral strains and batch efficiencies between 0.15 and 0.22 mL H produced per 1 mL LB media were achieved. All 11 isolates studied, which had been aerobically cultured in minimal media since 1988, exhibited a decreased H production rate or capacity with many strains unable to grow under anaerobic conditions at all. The genomes of these strains have been sequenced and a preliminary analysis of the correlations between genotype and phenotype shows that mutations in gene are exclusively observed in the two isolates which produce H, potentially suggesting a role for this gene in the maintenance of wild type metabolic pathways in the context of diverse mutational backgrounds. These results provide hints towards uncovering new genetic targets for the pursuit of bacterial strains with increased capacity for H production as well as a case study in speciation and the control of phenotypic switching.

8. The uniqueness of flow in probing the aggregation behavior of clinically relevant antibodies.
PMID:日期:2020-03-15The development of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) can be hindered by their tendency to aggregate throughout their lifetime, which can illicit immunogenic responses and render mAb manufacturing unfeasible. Consequently, there is a need to identify mAbs with desirable thermodynamic stability, solubility, and lack of self-association. These behaviors are assessed using an array of in silico and in vitro assays, as no single assay can predict aggregation and developability. We have developed an extensional and shear flow device (EFD), which subjects proteins to defined hydrodynamic forces which mimic those experienced in bioprocessing. Here, we utilize the EFD to explore the aggregation propensity of 33 IgG1 mAbs, whose variable domains are derived from clinical antibodies. Using submilligram quantities of material per replicate, wide-ranging EFD-induced aggregation (9-81% protein in pellet) was observed for these mAbs, highlighting the EFD as a sensitive method to assess aggregation propensity. By comparing the EFD-induced aggregation data to those obtained previously from 12 other biophysical assays, we show that the EFD provides distinct information compared with current measures of adverse biophysical behavior. Assessing a candidate's liability to hydrodynamic force thus adds novel insight into the rational selection of developable mAbs that complements other assays.

9. Effectiveness of biosurfactant for the removal of trihalomethanes by biotrickling filter.
PMID:日期:2019-08-16In this study, the biodegradation of a mixture of two trihalomethane (THM) compounds, chloroform (CF) and dichlorobromomethane (DCBM), was evaluated using two laboratory-scale biotrickling filters (BTFs). The two BTFs, hereby designated as "BTF-A" and "BTF-B," were run parallel and used ethanol as co-metabolite at different loading rates (LRs), and a lipopeptide-type biosurfactant that was generated by the gram-positive bacteria, Surfactin, respectively. The results using BTF-A showed that adding ethanol at a higher rate of 4.59 g/(m h) resulted in removal efficiencies of 85% and 87% for CF and DCBM, respectively. Conversely, for the same LR, the use of Surfactin without ethanol (BTF-B) showed comparable removal efficiencies of 85% and 80% for CF and DCBM, respectively. The maximum rate constant for CF and DCBM for the BTF-A was 0.00203 s and 0.0022 s, respectively. For the same THMs LR, similar reaction rate constants resulted for the BTF-B. Further studies were conducted to investigate and understand the microbial diversity within both BTFs. The result indicated that for BTF with co-metabolite, . was the most dominant fungi over 98% followed by with less than 2%. and . were instead the .
