1. A parametric numerical study for the processing of highly reactive thermoset resins for liquid moulding applications.
PMID:日期:2026-05-01This study explores part geometrical deviations with manufacturing strategies for composite materials, focusing on highly reactive thermoset resins processed through Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM). A simulation framework that integrates the filling stage and stress-deformation analysis using a thermo-viscoelastic (TVE) model was developed to improve the understanding of material behaviour and its impact on part quality. The influence of key process parameters, including process temperature, nominal injection pressure, number of plies, and ply stacking sequence, was investigated for part geometrical deviations. The results show that the ply stacking sequence and the number of plies are the most significant factors affecting part geometrical deviation. In contrast, process temperature and injection pressure had only a minor effect. This work demonstrates the potential of the proposed simulation approach as a reliable tool for guiding experimental implementation and improving part quality when using highly reactive thermosets.

2. Tensile properties improvement of a unidirectional-mat flax/epoxy composite via click chemistry, nanocellulose addition and surface refining of short mat fibres.
PMID:日期:2025-10-01The mechanical characteristics of natural fibre composites (NFCs) are closely linked to fibre-matrix and fibre-fibre interactions. This work investigates the improvement of tensile properties of a flax/epoxy composite through the application of click chemistry reaction to a unidirectional-mat (UDM) reinforcement with modifications made on the short fibre mat and unidirectional flax fibre phases of the reinforcement. The surface of short flax fibres was fibrillated to increase the accessibility of hydroxyl groups for all preliminary reactions and the final click chemistry cross-linking, which creates stable covalent triazole bonds between azide and alkyne groups. A small percentage of treated nanocellulose was incorporated to further enhance the reinforcement properties. FTIR and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of the various functional groups on the surface of nanocellulose and flax fibres with very high degrees of substitution. The treatment significantly improved the mechanical properties of the dry reinforcement, including a 220% mean increase in the tensile strength. However, the treatments, particularly the addition of nanocellulose, resulted in a reduction in the permeability to liquid resin of the reinforcements, highlighting the need for compromises in their manufacture. Nonetheless, marked improvements in tensile strength and Young's modulus were obtained for composites made of pre-compacted and cross-linked fibre preforms. Increases in elastic modulus, strength and strain at break of up to 50.1%, 53.8% and 10.1% were obtained, respectively.

3. The effect of automated fiber placement process parameters on interlaminar shear strength of uncured prepreg bonded samples.
PMID:日期:2025-05-01The effects of automated fiber placement (AFP) parameters on the inter-laminar bonding between the uncured thermoset prepreg tapes were investigated using a systematic series of experiments and FE analysis. The goal was to optimize inter-laminar bonding during the AFP lay-up process and provide a model for the interlayer bonding of uncured prepreg tapes during this process. The shear strength of the interfacial bonding plays a pivotal role in the formation of planar and non-planar deformations during the automated fiber placement (AFP) process. The quality of this bonding has a significant effect on the quality of the manufactured parts. Besides, the bonding strength is interconnected with various AFP process parameters including compaction roller, feed rate, temperature, and dwell time. Hence, a systematic series of experimental studies are conducted to investigate how changes in process parameters affect the shear strength of single lap joint (SLJ) specimens produced under various process conditions. To fabricate the single-lap joint samples under different conditions, an in-house setup was developed to simulate the AFP process allowing us to control compaction force, feed rate, temperature, and dwell time during the process. The experimental results of the single lap joints indicate that the shear strength of the bonded prepreg tows is significantly influenced by the interaction among the process parameters rather than by their individual, isolated effects. Moreover, the responses of prepreg SLJs are simulated using the FE method. Through the comparison of numerical and experimental results, it will be clearly shown that the developed FE framework can act as a reliable approach for modeling the bonding layer between prepreg tapes.

4. Role of graphene concentration on electrochemical and tribological properties of graphene-poly(methyl methacrylate) composite coatings.
PMID:日期:2023-10-01This study aims to investigate the influence of graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) concentration on the electrochemical and tribological properties of GNP-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composite coatings. GNP-PMMA coatings were prepared with varying GNP concentrations (0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 wt %) using the drop-casting method onto AA6061 aluminum alloy substrates. Results showed that the addition of 1.0 wt % GNP increased the tensile strength of PMMA but further increase reduced the tensile strength and fracture strain of the composites. Permeability studies indicated that 1.0GNP-PMMA had the lowest water vapour transition rate. All GNP-PMMA coatings showed a higher coating resistance and impedance modulus at the lowest frequency compared to neat PMMA with 1.0GNP-PMMA having the highest |Z| value in comparison to the composites with higher GNP concentrations. According to Raman mapping, an increase in the concentration of GNP in the composite resulted in the agglomeration of graphene, which caused the debonding of the graphene-PMMA interfaces and also resulted in a higher number of shear fronts and other defects on the fracture surface that reduced barrier properties of graphene. The specific wear rate of 1.0GNP-PMMA was lower than that of neat PMMA, indicating improved wear resistance. The coefficient of friction was lowest for 5.0GNP-PMMA, although this was due to a higher amount of material being transferred to the counterface. Accordingly, optimizing the GNP concentration enables the development of high-performance PMMA coatings with enhanced strength, improved barrier properties, and reduced wear rates, making them well-suited for applications such as corrosion protection and tribological coatings.

5. Effect of cellulose and lignin content on the mechanical properties and drop-weight impact damage of injection-molded polypropylene-flax and -pine fiber composites.
PMID:日期:2023-09-01Designing bio-composites for structural applications requires a thorough understanding of their mechanical behavior. In this study, we examined the differences in the tensile strength and drop-weight impact response between polypropylene reinforced with flax fibers and that reinforced with pinewood short fibers, as both fibers differ in composition (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) and length-to-diameter ratio. We found that flax fibers, which have higher cellulose content and are twice as long as pine fibers, increased the stiffness and shock resistance of bio-composite materials. However, pine fibers, which contain more lignin, showed increased material ductility and energy absorption. Impulse excitation, acoustic emission and micro-CT techniques were used to evaluate the post-impact mechanical properties and the contribution of each damage mechanism to the final material failure (tearing). The experimental results were used to validate a model based on finite elements. Our results revealed that the experimental and finite-element analyses were in good agreement.

6. Thermochemical and rheological characterization of highly reactive thermoset resins for liquid moulding.
PMID:日期:2023-08-01Highly reactive thermosets are currently expanding the processability of high-performance structures for transportation industry. The short polymerization time makes it a suitable process to replace metallic structures with polymer matrix-based composite materials. The resin characterization is a fundamental step to obtain the properties and the associated constitutive models, which are required to design and optimize the manufacturing process parameters of composite materials. However, the short time on polymerization requires to use the characterization equipment at their performance capability limits. This work presents a comprehensive methodology to characterize the thermo-chemical properties of highly reactive resin systems, which are relevant for resin impregnation into the preform for liquid injection processes. Four different commercial resin systems are analyzed in this study. Experimental methodologies are analyzed and adapted for best data acquisition at high temperature isothermals. Based on the experimental data, Cure kinetics and viscosity equation-based models are used to describe the behaviour of these complex resin systems. Processing maps are developed based on the cure kinetics and viscosity models to predict the processability time for specific process conditions than can be used on liquid injection moulding processes.

7. Mapping internal strain fields of fused filament fabrication metal filled polylactic acid structure using digital volume correlation.
PMID:日期:2023-06-01With the advancement in Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), its application is increasing widely across different industries such as aeronautical, biomedical, robotics, etc. The internal structure is becoming more complex and intricate with varying materials of reinforcement which are used to improve mechanical properties. Current measurement techniques like Digital Image Correlation (DIC) are non-destructive testing methods that do not provide enough information on the behaviour of internal microstructure for anisotropic FFF materials. Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) is non-destructive testing technique which provides full field internal 3D deformation and strain fields. Copper particle filled PLA samples manufactured using FFF method with 20, 40, 60 and 80 infill percentages were loaded in tension inside Micro-CT. X-rays were passed through the sample to get a volumetric dataset for different loadings. Using DVC method on the dataset, internal displacement and strain fields were generated for 20, 40, 60 and 80 infill percentage FFF sample.

8. Towards better understanding the stiffness of nanocomposites via parametric study of an analytical model modeling parameters and experiments.
PMID:日期:2023-03-01The stiffness of polymeric materials can be improved dramatically with the addition of nanoparticles. In theory, as the nanoparticle loading in the polymer increases, the nanocomposite becomes stiffer; however, experiments suggest that little or no stiffness improvement is observed beyond an optimal nanoparticle loading. The mismatch between the theoretical and experimental findings, particularly at high particle loadings, needs to be understood for the effective use of nanoparticles. In this respect, we have recently developed an analytical model to close the gap in the literature and predict elastic modulus of nanocomposites. The model is based on a three-phase Mori-Tanaka model coupled with the Monte-Carlo method, and satisfactorily captures the experimental results, even at high nanoparticle loadings. The developed model can also be used to study the effects of agglomeration in nanocomposites. In this paper, we use this model to study the effects of agglomeration and related model parameters on the stiffness of nanocomposites. In particular, the effects of particle orientation, critical distance, dispersion state and agglomerate property, and particle aspect ratio are investigated to demonstrate capabilities of the model and to observe how optimal particle loading changes with respect these parameters. The study shows that the critical distance defining agglomerates and the properties of agglomerates are the key design parameters at high particle loadings. These two parameters rule the optimal elastic modulus with respect to particle loading. The findings will allow researchers to form design curves and successfully predict the elastic moduli of nanocomposites without the exhaustive experimental undertakings.

9. Strength and failure mechanism of single-lap magnesium-basalt fiber metal laminate adhesively bonded joints: Experimental and numerical assessments.
PMID:日期:2022-05-01A quick literature search reveals the significant lack of data and information concerning magnesium-to-magnesium bonded joints as well as fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) made with magnesium alloys. Therefore, a systematic series of experimental and numerical investigations are carried out to assess the performance of single-lap joints mating FML adherends. The primary goal is to better understand the effects of geometrical and material parameters that influence the performance of magnesium-to-magnesium joints. The FML adherends used in this study consist of basalt natural fiber-epoxy laminate sandwiched in between thin sheets of magnesium alloys, which were subsequently adhesively bonded using a room-cured epoxy resin. The effects of two types of surface treatments, namely, "sandblasting" and "sandblasting with resin coating" on the bond strength and failure mechanism of the adhesively bonded joints (ABJs) are investigated. A 3D numerical model developed to simulate the response of the joints subjected to quasi-static lap-shear tests. This model, which accounts for the material and geometrical nonlinearity in the joints, is used to perform a parametric analysis for establishing the optimal overlap bond length. The distributions of the shear and peel stresses in the overlap region and the effects of adhesive thickness on the performance of the joints are systematically examined. The comparison of the experimental data and numerical results confirms the robustness and cost-effectiveness of the numerical model in predicting the response of such single-lap ABJs.

10. A predictive model towards understanding the effect of reinforcement agglomeration on the stiffness of nanocomposites.
PMID:日期:2022-05-01Nanocomposite technologies can be significantly enhanced through a careful exploration of the effects of agglomerates on mechanical properties. Existing models are either overly simplified (e.g., neglect agglomeration effects) or often require a significant amount of computational resources. In this study, a novel continuum-based model with a statistical approach was developed. The model is based on a modified three-phase Mori-Tanaka model, which accounts for the filler, agglomerate, and matrix regions. Fillers are randomly dispersed in a defined space to predict agglomeration tendency. The proposed model demonstrates good agreement with the experimentally measured elastic moduli of spin-coated cellulose nanocrystal reinforced polyamide-6 films. The techniques and methodologies presented in the study are sufficiently general in that they can be extended to the analyses of various types of polymeric nanocomposite systems.
