1. Railway Transition Zones: Energy Evaluation of a Novel Transition Structure for Critical Loading Conditions.
PMID:日期:2025-01-04Railway transition zones (RTZs) are subjected to amplified degradation leading to high maintenance costs and reduced availability of tracks for operation. Over the years, several mitigation measures have been investigated to deal with the amplified degradation of these zones. However, to ensure the robustness of a design solution, it must be evaluated for critical conditions arising due to certain loading and track conditions. In this paper, the critical load conditions arising due to different velocities (sub-critical, critical and super-critical), the direction of the moving load, the combination of inertial effects and track imperfections (non-straight rail and hanging sleepers) and passage of multiple axles (using a comprehensive vehicle model) are investigated for an embankment-bridge transition. The results are then compared against the recently proposed design of a transition structure called SHIELD (Safe Hull Inspired Energy Limiting Design) to evaluate its performance under these critical conditions using various vehicle models and finite element models of the RTZs. It was found that the novel design of the transition structure effectively mitigates dynamic amplifications and results in smooth strain energy distribution across sub-critical, critical, and super-critical velocity regimes in both directions of movement implying that the expected operation-induced degradation will be as uniform as possible in longitudinal direction. Furthermore, even though this transition structure is designed to deal with initial track conditions (perfectly straight track), its superior performance is not confined to tracks in perfect condition; it also efficiently addresses adverse effects from track imperfections such as hanging sleepers and non-straight rail. In the end, this work demonstrates the robustness of the design solution for all the critical conditions under study.

2. Design Performance and Frequency Response Analysis of SAW-Based Sensor for Dichloromethane Gas Sensing Amidst the COVID-19.
PMID:日期:2020-10-26To avoid the risk of increase in the rate of human infection is a big challenge for healthcare staffs during the treatment of patients affected from corona virus disease-2019 (COVID-19). This work is intended to save COVID-19-infected patients from conveyed hazardous volatile gases (VOCs) by the gas stream. The VOCs are generally generated from the pathways of medical respiratory devices. Here, we present a surface acoustic wave-based sensor device for sensing dichloromethane (DCM) gas that can be connected with a gas pathway system used in medical devices. Dichloromethane is a volatile organic compound. Single- (polyisobutylene, PIB) and multi- (polyisobutylene/silicon nitride, PIB/SiN) surface acoustic wave-based sensors are designed on LiNbO piezoelectric substrate. The designed models patterned with interdigitated transducer (IDT) aluminum (Al) electrodes are used to analyze gas sensing behavior for dichloromethane (CHCl, DCM) gas. The studies for DCM gas sensing are carried out for single- and multi-layer models using COMSOL Multi-physics software. The resonant frequency and displacement are also observed for 100 ppm gas concentration of DCM at room temperature. It has been found that multi-layer designed model shows higher sensitivity as compared to single layer (PIB/LiNbO) model on exposing DCM gas. The estimation of various parameters observed by the proposed module is also explained. It is observed that the sensitivity of sensor for detection of VOCs (generated in gas pathways in medical devices) is best suited in the present crisis of COVID-19 pandemic.
