Although there is universal recognition of the critical role that parents play in influencing the well-being of adolescents, there is sparse evidence that documents this relationship in low- and middle-income countries. Drawing on cross-sectional data from Ethiopia, this article explores how parenting practices shape the well-being of very young adolescent boys, and how these patterns differ in urban and rural contexts. We analyze both quantitative and qualitative survey data (2017-2018) from the Gender and Adolescence: Global Evidence study among very young adolescents (aged 10-12 years) in Ethiopia. Quantitative data include 2,219 boys, 2,875 girls, and their caregivers (n = 5,094 primary female caregivers; 467 primary male caregivers). We provide descriptive statistics for both boys and girls and caregivers, with primary multivariate regression analyses conducted for boys to assess the association between parenting practices and adolescent boys' outcomes across 4 capability domains (physical health, mental health, violence, and education). These quantitative data are complemented by in-depth qualitative data from adolescent boys (n = 65) and parents (n = 184). Adolescent boys in urban areas are significantly more likely to both experience (63.1% vs. 51.7%, p = .002) and perpetrate peer violence (40.6% vs. 29.7%, p = .019) as compared to girls. In rural areas, adolescent boys' mental health is slightly worse than girls' (0.965 vs. 0.859, p = .070), and boys report significantly higher rates of hunger than girls (24.5% vs. 18.1%, p < .001). Turning to adolescent boys only, gendered attitudes are more entrenched in rural areas, with mothers more likely to disagree that girls and boys should share household tasks equally (9.6% vs. 25.1%, p < .001) and more likely to agree that if a family can afford to send only one child to school, it should be the boy (26.3% vs. 44.2%, p < .001). We find strong associations between parent behavior and adolescent boys' outcomes, particularly for violence, with similar associations seen in urban and rural areas. A mother's use of physical or emotional violence to correct behavior is associated with increases in experiencing (0.201, p < .001) and perpetrating (0.181, p < .001) peer violence. A father's use of physical or emotional violence is also associated with a 17.4 percentage point (pp) (p = .002) increase in experiencing peer violence and a 19.3 pp (p = .002) increase in perpetrating peer violence. Parenting, by both mothers and fathers, has a powerful influence on adolescent boys' health and well-being outcomes. There is a need for greater attention to prioritizing age- and gender-sensitive parenting programs that engage with both male and female caregivers as a key lever to improve adolescent health outcomes.

Although often linked, much is unknown about the relationship between adolescents' social media use and stress in everyday life. This study examined how the effect of social media use on stress unfolds at daily, weekly, biweekly, and monthly levels, focusing on overall effects and person-specific effects. We also tested whether adolescents differed in effects based on their gender, age, and trait resilience. We used a 100-day diary study among 479 adolescents (44,211 completed observations). Participants reported daily stress levels and time spent on frequently used social media platforms. Trait-level moderators were measured in a baseline questionnaire. The average daily effect of social media use on stress was negligible (β = .03). However, there was substantial variation among adolescents in our sample: Person-specific effect sizes suggest a positive link between usage and stress among 37.0% of adolescents and a negative link among 14.2% of adolescents. Differences in these effect sizes could not be explained by gender, age, or trait resilience. At broader timescales, the average effect sizes of social media use with stress tended to strengthen, and more adolescents experienced increased stress on usage, rising from weekly (β = .05), over biweekly (β = .07), to monthly levels (β = .13). On average, the daily impact of adolescents' social media use on stress seems minimal. However, the pattern of effect sizes suggests that the effect may become more pronounced over longer periods. This study is a first step toward understanding how everyday social media-related stress potentially accumulates over time.

Injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality during adolescence. We examined how parental socioeconomic position in mid- and late adolescence is associated with risk of unintentional injury. We followed 70,226 Danish adolescents aged 15-24 years from the Danish National Youth Cohort 2014 for 8 years using national registers. Injuries were identified via International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes, and parental socioeconomic position was measured by education, income, and occupation. Poisson regression estimated absolute and relative injury risks, and the Pareto Principle was applied to identify a high-risk subgroup, assessing its association with parental socioeconomic position. Between 2014 and 2022, 28,233 adolescents sustained at least one unintentional injury (47,776 injuries in total), including 1,425 severe cases dominantly head trauma (62.4%). Upper/lower extremities and the head accounted for nearly 90% of all injuries. Injury rates were 15%-34% higher among the least advantaged adolescents compared to the most advantaged, and the risk curve reflected a dose-dependent gradient across income, education, and occupational status groups. Severe injuries showed a similar pattern, though not statistically significant. Notably, 11% of adolescents accounted for 50% of injury incidences, and those at the lower end of the social gradient were more likely to belong to this high-risk group experiencing repeated injury exposures. Socioeconomic inequalities in unintentional injury permeate the entire social gradient, suggesting structural inequities that ultimately result in a high-risk subgroup, accounting for 50% of all injuries. Evidence regarding causal explanations driving these inequalities as well as cost-effective measures to reduce inequalities is warranted.

The menstrual cycle is an important but often neglected indicator of the overall health of menstruating adolescents. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offer menstrual cycle-related practice recommendations for providers caring for this population. About a quarter of primary care in the United States is provided by nurse practitioners (NPs); yet, factors influencing their adherence to these practice recommendations remain underexamined. We explored factors that predicted NPs' reported adherence to ACOG/AAP menstrual cycle-related recommendations when providing primary care to children and adolescents. A national cross-sectional sample of U.S. NPs was recruited for an online survey. We used hierarchical multiple linear regression to assess the ability of sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, and external barriers to predict practice adherence. NPs from all 50 states (N = 886) participated (M = 46 years; 92% female; 80% White, non-Hispanic; 71% family NPs). Holding significant sociodemographic characteristics constant, NPs' attitudes, subjective norms, and external barriers collectively predicted nearly 40% of the variation in their reported adherence to the menstrual cycle-related recommendations of ACOG/AAP. NPs' attitudes had the most explanatory power for practice adherence. Although NPs in this sample reported that they often adhered to ACOG/AAP menstrual cycle-related recommendations, strengthening NPs' positive attitudes and organizational norms may increase adherence to menstrual cycle-related recommendations. Stronger, more consistent messaging about best practices from professional societies and within NP curricula may improve NPs' attention to and support for adolescents' menstrual and overall health.

Advancements in sickle cell disease (SCD) care have improved survival to adulthood in high-resource countries; however, a 20-year life expectancy gap persists compared with the general population. Transfer from pediatric to adult SCD care represents a vulnerable period, yet population-level data on transfer outcomes are limited. We evaluated rates and factors associated with successful transfer to adult care among youth with SCD across three US states and assessed associated health care utilization. We used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Sickle Cell Data Collection program from Alabama, Colorado, and Indiana and included individuals aged 15-20 years with confirmed or probable SCD and continuous insurance coverage for 12 months following their last pediatric encounter. Successful transfer was defined as ≥2 outpatient encounters with an adult provider within 12 months. Health care utilization, chronic transfusion therapy, and social vulnerability index (SVI) were analyzed by transfer status. Among 205 individuals, 42.4% achieved successful transfer to adult care. Of these, 18.6% established care with an adult hematologist/oncologist, and 5.8% with an adult SCD specialist. Successfully transferred youth demonstrated higher acute care utilization with median emergency department visits increasing from 3.02 to 3.97 per person-year post transfer, compared with 1.25 to 1.12 among the unsuccessful group. Chronic transfusion therapy was more common among the successfully transferred (16.1% vs. 13.6%), whereas SVI was similar between groups. Fewer than one-fifth of individuals with SCD successfully transferred to an adult hematologist/oncologist. Successful transfer was associated with higher acute and outpatient health care utilization, highlighting persistent gaps in continuity of care.

Suicide is a leading cause of adolescent death in the United States, yet its mortality trends and disparities remain incompletely characterized, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study analyzed mortality data from 1999 to 2023 among individuals aged 10-19 years from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) database. Population characteristics of decedents and trends in crude suicide mortality rates per 100,000 (CSMRs) were examined. Mortality changes were compared across the prepandemic (2018-2019), early pandemic (2020-2021), and later pandemic (2022-2023) periods. From 1999-2019, 44,426 adolescents died by suicide, mostly among males (77.6%), older adolescents (84.5%), and White adolescents (82.5%). After an initial decline from 1999-2007, overall CSMRs increased markedly from 2007-2019. CSMRs were highest among males, older adolescents, and White adolescents, whereas the fastest increases occurred among females, younger adolescents, and non-Black/non-White adolescents. Regionally, Midwestern and rural areas showed the highest CSMRs and rates of increase. During the early pandemic period, overall mortality declined slightly (-1.23%) but increased among females (+4.22%), younger adolescents (+2.88%), Black adolescents (+21.88%), the South (+4.58%), noncore rural counties (+1.08%), and large central metropolitan counties (+4.81%). The later pandemic period was marked by an overall decline in CSMRs (-8.53%), with decreases across most subgroups, although rates did not decline among Black adolescents (+0.85%). Adolescent suicide is an escalating public health crisis with disparities that require equity-focused strategies to reverse trends and reduce gaps.

    9. Criminal Legal System Involvement During Adolescence as a Social Determinant of Adulthood Body Mass Index?

A variety of environmental and genetic factors contribute to body mass index (BMI) over the life course, including experiences and events that occur during adolescence. One such experience that could shape early adulthood and adulthood BMI is criminal legal system (CLS) involvement before 18 years, which could influence dietary behaviors and socioeconomic outcomes. However, to date, no research has evaluated the association between CLS involvement before 18 years and BMI from 2003-2021. The current study used a United States representative sample of 8,961 youths born between 1980 and 1984 (the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-1997), to assess if being arrested before 18 years, incarcerated in juvenile facilities before 18 years, or incarcerated in adult facilities before 18 years influenced average BMI and the change in BMI over time during early adulthood and adulthood. Random intercept and random intercept growth curve models (with average treatment effects inverse probability weights) were estimated to answer the identified research questions. Being arrested (b = -0.471; p < .001), incarcerated in a juvenile facility (b = -0.683; p < .001), or incarcerated in an adult facility (b = -1.168; p < .001) before 18 years was associated with lower yearly BMI from 2003 to 2021. Being arrested (b = -0.023; p < .001) or incarcerated in juvenile facility (b = -0.032; p < .001) before 18 years was associated with lower rate of increases in BMI over time. The findings suggest that the collateral consequences of youth CLS contact could contribute to BMI disparities. Strategies should be implemented to identify and address the mechanisms driving the observed associations.
