1. Community-Based Participatory Research Approach for Social Media Health Promotion and Youth Engagement.
PMID:日期:2025-10-24Social media is crucial for health promotion in Philadelphia, where youth face high rates of teen births and STIs. Proud Teens of Philly (PTOP), linked to Temple University's Center for Asian Health, uses its Youth Advisory Board (YAB) to engage 13-18-year-olds in outreach and content creation on Instagram and YouTube Shorts. The YAB's eight members educate peers on consent, relationships, and STI prevention. A qualitative survey rated the CBPR approach highly, scoring 4.66 out of 5. We emphasized inclusive, interactive content. Establishing privacy protocols remains essential.

2. {"_":"Discomfort with asking the police for help: Patterns among 8 grade youth across sexual, gender, and racial identities and history of suicidality.","sup":["th"]}
PMID:日期:2025-04-24Youth experiencing a suicidal crisis may interface with public services like police. The current analysis examined how intersecting social identities (gender, sexual, and racial/ethnic identities) and history of suicidality were associated with discomfort asking the police for help, using a decision tree approach. The sample included 8 grade students (N=36,513) who participated in the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey. 32.4% of students reported discomfort with asking the police for help. Youth with multiple marginalized identities who have experienced suicidal ideation and suicide attempt had the greatest discomfort with asking the police for help. Non-police models for crisis response teams are indicated.

3. Building social support into mental health and substance use treatment trajectories: Insights from a longitudinal qualitative and ethnographic study with young people experiencing unstable housing and homelessness.
PMID:日期:2025-02-21This study explores the opportunities and challenges of fostering social support across street-involved young people's mental health and substance use (MHSU) treatment trajectories. We conducted in-depth interviews with youth and their providers between 2017 and 2021. Findings demonstrate that family and others could be crucial catalysts for initiating and re-engaging in MHSU treatment among youth. However, many reported not receiving enough assistance from service providers in navigating complex social relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. Our findings underscore the need for a more holistic approach to MHSU treatment that encircles the young person and their social networks, including caregivers.

4. To Change or Not to Change? A Study regarding the Satisfaction of Care Workers and Adolescents with the Motivational Interviewing Based Residential Youth Care Training Program Up2U.
PMID:日期:2022-08-24Long-term behavioral change is often difficult to achieve with adolescents staying in residential youth care. To achieve long-term behavioral change, we developed the Up2U training program to enhance these adolescents' intrinsic motivation for change. Based on motivational interviewing and solution-focused therapy, Up2U is designed for conducting one-on-one conversations with adolescents in residential youth care. The aim of this study is to evaluate the experiences that adolescents and care workers have had with Up2U. The results of semi-structured interviews show that, in general, the care workers were satisfied with Up2U. They identified the clarity, conciseness, and sample questions as positive elements of Up2U. In contrast, the care workers regarded the extensiveness and the implementation of Up2U as less positive. The adolescents also seemed to be positive about the use of Up2U during one-on-one conversations. In conclusion, although both care workers and adolescents were generally satisfied, there is still room for improvement.

5. Bringing Evidence-Based Interventions into the Schools: An Examination of Organizational Factors and Implementation Outcomes.
PMID:日期:2021-03-06Although schools are one of the largest providers of behavioral health services for youth, many barriers exist to the implementation of evidence-based interventions in schools. This study used the Stages of Implementation Completion (SIC) to examine school-based implementation outcomes for a computer-assisted cognitive behavioral therapy intervention for anxious youth. Organizational factors and predictors of program startup also were examined. Results indicated that the SIC detected implementation variability in schools and suggested that spending more time completing pre-implementation activities may better prepare schools for active implementation of program delivery. Furthermore, proficiency emerged as a potentially important organizational factor to examine in future school-based implementation research.

6. Engaging rural young mothers in a technology-based intervention for depression.
PMID:日期:2019-02-09Peripartum depression is prevalent among young mothers (ages 25 and younger), and low family support can exacerbate depressive symptoms. The current study explores an innovative method for engaging young mothers in a family-based intervention to help reduce peripartum depressive symptoms. This descriptive study includes details on the baseline characteristics of participants, integrative support teams, and a service delivery method to engage families living rural communities. In conclusion, engaging depressed young mothers living in rural communities requires a multifaceted approach. Our approach has demonstrated promise in engaging this hard-to-reach population. Implications for clinical practice and future research are addressed.

7. Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI): A Systemic Approach to Complex Developmental Trauma.
PMID:日期:2013-10Children and youth who have experienced foster care or orphanage-rearing have often experienced complex developmental trauma, demonstrating an interactive set of psychological and behavioral issues. Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) is a therapeutic model that trains caregivers to provide effective support and treatment for at-risk children. TBRI has been applied in orphanages, courts, residential treatment facilities, group homes, foster and adoptive homes, churches, and schools. It has been used effectively with children and youth of all ages and all risk levels. This article provides the research base for TBRI and examples of how it is applied.

8. "Making it": Understanding adolescent resilience in two informal settlements (slums) in Nairobi, Kenya.
PMID:日期:2012-03-16Many adolescents living in contexts characterized by adversity achieve positive outcomes. We adopt a protection-risk conceptual framework to examine resilience (academic achievement, civic participation, and avoidance of risk behaviors) among 1,722 never-married 12-19 year olds living in two Kenyan urban slums. We find stronger associations between explanatory factors and resilience among older (15-19 years) than younger (12-14 years) adolescents. Models for pro-social behavior and models for anti-social behavior emerge as key predictors of resilience. Further accumulation of evidence on risk and protective factors is needed to inform interventions to promote positive outcomes among youth situated in an ecology of adversity.

9. Correlates of Externalizing Behavior Symptoms Among Youth Within Two Impoverished, Urban Communities.
PMID:日期:2010-01-01The current study examines whether risk factors associated with child externalizing behavior symptoms differ between two similar low-income urban communities, using baseline parent data of 154 African American youth (ages 9-15) participating in the Collaborative HIV-Prevention and Adolescent Mental Health Project (CHAMP) family program. Separate multiple regression analyses of each city sample indicated that greater child externalizing symptoms were associated with increasing parenting hassles for New York families (n = 46), but greater parent mental health symptoms for participants in Chicago (n = 108). Understanding such distinctions between communities is an important first step towards tailoring services to unique community needs.
