1. Ultra-thin inorganic oxide and nitride films as an alternative blocking layer for electrochemical sensors.
PMID:日期:2025-06-10The desire to translate biosensors for real time molecular monitoring has intensified due to the commercial success of 2-week continuous glucose monitors. However, a common limitation for emerging biosensors is that their lifetimes are often too short for commercially expected benchmarks of at least 3-day and ideally 2-week operation. Electrochemical sensors remain the preferred format of biochemical sensing thanks to their low cost, size, weight, and power requirements for mobile deployment. When exposed to biological fluid, all electrochemical sensors require a blocking layer to protect the electrode surface from fouling and redox interferents. Traditional blocking layer approaches rely on self-assembled monolayers which are often fragile to biological interferents like proteins and require specific electrode materials to improve their stability. Presented here is an evaluation of ultra-thin inorganic oxide and nitride films as an alternative to self-assembled monolayer blocking layers. Specifically, silicon oxide, silicon nitride, and aluminum oxide films were deposited by electron beam evaporation or atomic layer deposition at thicknesses of several nanometers to mimic the electrical capacitance of a conventional monolayer blocking layer. These oxide films were characterized over 7-days and demonstrated to provide poor protection against interfering redox currents from dissolved ferricyanide (150 - 300 μA/cm2) and oxygen reduction interference (30 - 60 μA/cm2). The oxide films were then used as a blocking layer in an electrochemical aptamer sensor using the previously published aptamer for phenylalanine. The phenylalanine sensor showed a binding affinity stronger than found in literature, but a reduced signal gain (~ 20 % change in methylene blue redox current compared to the expected 50 % previously published on gold). It is speculated and supported by literature that these oxide and nitride films gradually dissolve over periods of days in an aqueous environment. Results further show that if lower quality oxide or nitride films are used, they may be more stable, but at the cost of initially higher in currents. While oxide and nitride films fail to improve upon the performance of thiol-blocking layers on gold electrodes, they may provide utility in some applications by allowing for alternate electrode materials and surfaces to be used instead of traditional self-assembled monolayers on gold electrodes.

2. Early Detection of Fretting Corrosion in Hip Replacement by Acoustic Emission Non-Invasive Technique.
PMID:日期:2023-12-07The present study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using acoustic emission (AE) as a detection method for identifying failure mechanisms at the modular junction interface in total hip replacements (THRs) subjected to fretting corrosion. The experimental setup involved simulating fretting corrosion using a Ti6Al4V disc representing the femoral neck and a ZrO pin representing the femoral head. Mechanical testing provided insights into the wear and frictional behavior occurring at the modular junction interface. The results revealed that for all three potential conditions, a fretting condition of partial slip was observed. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the mechanical interactions and their influence on the overall performance and longevity of THRs. Electrochemical analysis shed light on the corrosion behavior under different potentiostatic conditions. High potentials in the anodic condition led to increased corrosion and ion transfer due to the breakdown of the passive oxide layer. Conversely, the cathodic potential condition exhibited a regrowth of the passive oxide layer, protecting the Ti6Al4V surface from further corrosion. The mid-range corrosion potential condition showed a dynamic equilibrium between corrosion and passivation processes. These electrochemical insights enhance our understanding of the mechanisms involved in fretting corrosion. The AE data proved to be promising in detecting and monitoring the onset and progression of failure mechanisms. The AE signals exhibited distinctive patterns that correlated with the severity of fretting corrosion. Notably, the hit driven data results, derived from AE signals, demonstrated the ability to differentiate between different levels of fretting conditions. This suggests that AE can serve as a valuable diagnostic tool for early detection and continuous monitoring of implant failure in THRs.

PMID:日期:2019-10-16[(N M )C ]O (0.20 ≤ ≤ 0.40) thin films have been prepared using the metal-organic decomposition method for microbolometer applications. Spinel thin films with a thickness of approximately 100 nm were obtained from the [(Ni Mn )Cu]O films annealed at the low temperature of 380 °C for 5 h, which enables their direct integration onto substrates having complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) read-out circuitry. To obtain negative-temperature-coefficient films with reasonable performance through low enough temperature anneal process, Ni content has been systematically varied, and the film microstructure has been found to depend on the relative amount of Ni and Mn. A single phase of cubic spinel structure has been confirmed in the prepared films. The resistivity () of the annealed films decreases with increasing Mn/Mn value due to the hopping mechanism between Mn and Mn cations in octahedral sites of spinel structure. Although the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of the annealed films has been decreased slightly with the increase of Ni content, good enough properties of the film ( = 61.3 Ω•cm, TCR = -2.950%/K in = 0.30 film) has been obtained even with the annealing at rather low temperature of 380 °C, thus enabling the direct integration onto substrates having read-out circuitry. The results obtained in this work are promising for applications to CMOS integrated microbolometer devices.

4. Domain Formation in Lithium-Rich Manganese-Nickel-Cobalt-Oxide Epitaxial Thin Films and Implications for Interpretation of Electrochemical Behavior.
PMID:日期:2018Due to the directional dependence of physical properties, it is advantageous to grow and then study materials in specific orientations. Films of battery materials grown in epitaxy offers the possibility to gain new insight into the role of physical structure on electrochemical behaviors. Here we demonstrate the growth, testing, and characterization of monoclinic-phase (space group 2/) Li-Mn-Ni-Co-O epitaxial films. The monoclinic phase is a layered structure and as such lithium diffusion is favored along specific crystallographic directions. Films were grown by pulsed laser deposition onto SrRuO/SrTiO substrates with (001) and (111) orientations. Cyclic voltammetry measured the response of these positive electrode materials, while the film structure was characterized using scanning transmission electron microscopy. A combination of imaging and diffraction identifies the presence of orientational variants. Variants disrupt the orientation anisotropy expected of these layered materials when grown in epitaxy, thereby masking differences in electrochemical behavior as a function of substrate orientation. Learning to control the domain structure now presents itself as a challenge to realize the potential of low symmetry battery materials grown in epitaxy on high symmetry substrates.

5. Elasticity patterns induced by phase-separation in polymer blend films.
PMID:日期:2017-01-10Systematical studies on the impact of the thickness of thin films composed of or on the effective elasticity of polymer-decorated soft substrate were performed. For both investigated polymer films, elasticity parameter was determined from force-displacement curves recorded using atomic force microscopy. of supported film , starting from the value comparable to the elasticity of soft support and reaching plateau for polymer layers thicker than 200 nm. In contrary, for films cast on hard support no significant thickness dependence of elasticity was observed and the value of elasticity parameter was similar to the one of the substrate. Based on these results, to produce of various shapes and dimensions induced by process in symmetric and asymmetric PS:PEO blend films on soft support was demonstrated. . In contrary, adhesion force was increased more than 3 times for PEO regions, as compared to PS areas.

6. The Influence of Pulsed Electroplating Frequency and Duty Cycle on Copper Film Microstructure and Stress State.
PMID:日期:2016-11-30In this work we studied the impact of pulse electroplating parameters on the cross-sectional and surface microstructures of blanket copper films using electron backscattering diffraction and x-ray diffraction. The films evaluated were highly (111) textured in the direction perpendicular to the film surface. The degree of preferential orientation was found to decrease with longer pulse on-times, due to strain energy driven growth of other grain orientations. Residual biaxial stresses were also measured in the films and higher pulse frequencies during deposition led to smaller biaxial stresses in the films. Film stress was also found to correlate with the amount of twinning in the copper film cross-sections. This has been attributed to the twins' thermal stability and mechanical properties.

7. Spectroelectrochemical Properties of Ultra-Thin Indium Tin Oxide Films under Electric Potential Modulation.
PMID:日期:2016-03-15In this work, the spectroscopic properties of ultra-thin ITO films are characterized under an applied electric potential modulation. To detect minute spectroscopic features, the ultra-thin ITO film was coated over an extremely sensitive single-mode integrated optical waveguide, which provided a long pathlength with more than adequate sensitivity for optical interrogation of the ultra-thin film. Experimental configurations with broadband light and several laser lines at different modulation schemes of an applied electric potential were utilized to elucidate the nature of intrinsic changes. The imaginary component of the refractive index (absorption coefficient) of the ultra-thin ITO film is unequivocally shown to have a dependence on the applied potential and the profile of this dependence changes substantially even for wavelengths inside a small spectral window (500-600 nm). The characterization technique and the data reported here can be crucial to several applications of the ITO material as a transparent conductive electrode, as for example in spectroelectrochemical investigations of surface-confined redox species.

8. {"_":"Structural study of epitaxial LiCoO films grown by pulsed laser deposition on single crystal SrTiO substrates.","sub":["2","3"]}
PMID:日期:2016Epitaxial LiCoO (LCO) thin films of different orientations were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in order to model single-crystal behavior of intercalation cathodes during electrochemical reactions. This paper demonstrates that (1) epitaxial growth of LCO on a single crystal Nb-doped SrTiO (Nb:STO) of different orientations occurs with a single orientation relationship; (2) surface morphology of the LCO films is established by the morphology of coalescing grains during island growth mode, whereas morphology of the grains can be visualized as different cuts from a cube with low-energy {104} surfaces; (3) the films consist of predominately trigonal R-LiCoO phase, with a small fraction of the occasionally present cubic c-LiCoO phase; (4) cyclic voltammetry measurements have determined rectification at interface between LCO and Nb:STO causing bias on the oxidation part of cycling, thus preventing full cycling.

9. Nanoparticle layer deposition for highly controlled multilayer formation based on high- coverage monolayers of nanoparticles.
PMID:日期:2016-01-01This paper establishes a strategy for chemical deposition of functionalized nanoparticles onto solid substrates in a layer-by-layer process based on self-limiting surface chemical reactions leading to monolayer formation within the multilayer system without any additional intermediate layers - nanoparticle layer deposition (NPLD). This approach is fundamentally different from previously established traditional layer-by-layer deposition techniques and is conceptually more similar to well-known atomic and molecular - layer deposition processes. The NPLD approach uses efficient chemical functionalization of the solid substrate material and complementary functionalization of nanoparticles to produce a nearly of these nanoparticles with the use of "click chemistry". Following this initial deposition, a second of nanoparticles is deposited using a copper-catalyzed "click reaction" with the azide-terminated silica nanoparticles of a different size. This layer-by-layer growth is demonstrated to produce stable covalently-bound multilayers of nearly perfect structure over macroscopic solid substrates. The formation of stable covalent bonds is confirmed spectroscopically and the stability of the multilayers produced is tested by sonication in a variety of common solvents. The 1-, 2- and 3-layer structures are interrogated by electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy and the thickness of the multilayers formed is fully consistent with that expected for highly efficient monolayer formation with each cycle of growth. This approach can be extended to include a variety of materials deposited in a predesigned sequence on different substrates with a highly conformal filling.

10. Designing thin film materials - Ternary borides from first principles.
PMID:日期:2015-05-29Exploiting the mechanisms responsible for the exceptional properties of aluminum based nitride coatings, we apply ab initio calculations to develop a recipe for designing functional thin film materials based on ternary diborides. The combination of binary diborides, preferring different structure types, results in supersaturated metastable ternary systems with potential for phase transformation induced effects. For the exemplary cases of M W B (with M = Al, Ti, V) we show by detailed ab initio calculations that the respective ternary solid solutions are likely to be experimentally accessible by modern depositions techniques.
