1. A Dual-Crosslinked Metallo-elastomer Platform for Architecture-Directed Vascular Remodeling.
1. 一种用于架构导向血管重塑的双交联金属弹性体平台PMID:日期:2026-01-01The engineering of durable small-diameter vascular grafts remains constrained by the challenge of simultaneously achieving mechanical robustness, controlled degradation, and instructive scaffold architecture. Here, we report a programmable dual-crosslinked metallo-elastomer platform, poly(1,3-propylene itaconate-co-2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylate-co-succinate-co-sebacate) (M-PBIS), that integrates dynamic metal-ligand coordination with covalent crosslinking to enable orthogonal control over network mechanics, time-dependent viscoelastic behavior, and processability. PBIS polymers were synthesized by modular step-growth polyesterification, allowing independent tuning of backbone composition, bipyridine ligand density for metal coordination, and alkene (C = C) content for covalent crosslinking. This multidimensional design space allowed systematic tuning of tensile elastic modulus (0.06-3.2 MPa), extensibility (53%-491%), toughness (66-1339 kJ m), creep resistance, and self-healing behavior, while maintaining controlled hydrolytic degradation and low physiological swelling (< 7%). Rheological analysis established a processing window supportive of conventional melt- and flow-based fabrication methods. To elucidate the role of scaffold architecture in vascular remodeling, M-PBIS was fabricated into small-diameter grafts using either poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-templated porous structures or electrowritten circumferentially-biased, helically wound fibers. In a rat carotid artery interposition model, electrowritten Zn-PBIS grafts maintained patency and dimensional stability through 21 weeks, supporting organized endothelialization, circumferential smooth muscle alignment, and structured extracellular matrix deposition. In contrast, PMMA-templated porous grafts underwent progressive dilation and structural instability during remodeling. These results demonstrate that dual-crosslinked metallo-elastomers combined with biomimetic circumferentially-biased fiber architecture enable mechanically resilient, biologically adaptive vascular grafts and establish M-PBIS as a manufacturable platform for resorbable small-diameter arterial reconstruction and other load-bearing soft-tissue applications. 2. Translational Potential of an Electrospun Polycaprolactone Scaffold for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.
PMID:日期:2026-01-01Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common and often require surgical reconstruction. Autografts remain the clinical standard for ACL reconstruction (ACLR) but are limited by donor site morbidity, inconsistent outcomes, and supply constraints. Here, we report the development of electrospun ligament (ES-Lig), a fully degradable, electrospun scaffold composed of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) designed to mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the native ACL. A scalable manufacturing process was established, incorporating electrospinning, filament stretching, alignment, and braiding. ES-Lig demonstrated controlled in vitro degradation over 12 months while retaining sufficient mechanical strength for early-stage healing. Mechanical characterisation revealed tensile properties and fixation stability comparable to autografts. In vitro biocompatibility was confirmed through cytotoxicity assays, patient-derived ACL explants, and direct cell growth onto the material. In an ovine ACLR model, ES-Lig enabled functional recovery, tissue infiltration throughout its length, and joint stability within 10 weeks post-implantation. Histological and imaging analyses confirmed graft-bone integration, vascularisation, and early ligamentisation. These findings establish ES-Lig as a promising, clinically translatable scaffold for next-generation ACL repair. 3. Multimaterial Shape Memory Polymer Fibers for Advanced Drug Release Applications.
PMID:日期:2025-01-01Stimuli-responsive polymers offer unprecedented control over drug release in implantable delivery systems. Shape memory polymer fibers (SMPFs), with their large specific surface area and programmable properties, present promising alternatives for triggerable drug delivery. However, the existing SMPFs face limitations in resolution, architecture, scalability, and functionality. We introduce thermal drawing as a materials and processing platform to fabricate microstructured, multimaterial SMPFs that are tens of meters long, with high resolution (10 μm) and extreme aspect ratios (> 10). These novel fibers achieve highly controlled, sequential drug release over tailored time periods of 6 months. Post thermal drawing photothermal coatings enable accelerated, spatially precise drug release within 4 months and facilitate light-triggered, untethered shape recovery. The fibers' fast self-tightening capability within 40 s shows their potential as smart sutures for minimally invasive procedures that deliver drugs simultaneously. In addition, the advanced multimaterial platform facilitates the integration of optical and metallic elements within SMP systems, allowing highly integrated fibers with shape memory attributes and unprecedented functionalities. This versatile technology opens new avenues for diverse biomedical applications, including implantable drug delivery systems, smart sutures, wound dressings, stents, and functional textiles. It represents a significant advancement in precise spatio-temporal control of drug delivery and adaptive medical devices. 4. Adaptive Printing of Conductive Microfibers for Seamless Functional Enhancement Across Diverse Surfaces and Shapes.
PMID:日期:2025-01-01Developing methods to non-destructively deposit conductive materials onto existing objects can enhance their functionalities on-demand. However, designing and creating such structures to accommodate diverse shapes and surface textures of pre-fabricated objects remains challenging. We report an on-demand printing strategy for creating substrate-less, conducting microfiber patterns that can be adaptively deposited onto a wide range of objects, including daily-use stationery, tools, smartwatches, and unconventional materials like porous graphene aerogels. Solution-drawn microfibers are directly deposited onto the object in a semi-wet state upon synthesis, enabling seamless fiber-object integration in a single step. The design and format of the microfiber patterns can be tuned on-demand to adapt to the shapes and surface textures of target objects, ensuring compatibility with user-specific applications. These air-permissive, highly transparent layers minimally obstruct the original appearance and functions of the objects while equipping them with additional sensing, energy conversion, and electronic connectivity capabilities. 5. {"_":"MXene/Cellulose Composite Cloth for Integrated Functions (-Cloth) in Personal Heating and Steam Generation.","i":["if"]}
PMID:日期:2024-01-01Given the abundant solar light available on our planet, it is promising to develop an advanced fabric capable of simultaneously providing personal thermal management and facilitating clean water production in an energy-efficient manner. In this study, we present the fabrication of a photothermally active, biodegradable composite cloth composed of titanium carbide MXene and cellulose, achieved through an electrospinning method. This composite cloth exhibits favorable attributes, including chemical stability, mechanical performance, structural flexibility, and wettability. Notably, our 0.1-mm-thick composite cloth (RC/MXene IV) raises the temperature of simulated skin by 5.6 °C when compared to a commercially available cotton cloth, which is five times thicker under identical ambient conditions. Remarkably, the composite cloth (RC/MXene V) demonstrates heightened solar light capture efficiency (87.7%) when in a wet state instead of a dry state. Consequently, this cloth functions exceptionally well as a high-performance steam generator, boasting a superior water evaporation rate of 1.34 kg m h under one-sun irradiation (equivalent to 1000 W m). Moreover, it maintains its performance excellence in solar desalination processes. The multifunctionality of these cloths opens doors to a diverse array of outdoor applications, including solar-driven water evaporation and personal heating, thereby enriching the scope of integrated functionalities for textiles. 6. Recent Advances in Superhydrophobic and Antibacterial Cellulose-Based Fibers and Fabrics: Bio-inspiration, Strategies, and Applications.
PMID:日期:2023-05-22Cellulose-based fabrics are ubiquitous in our daily lives. They are the preferred choice for bedding materials, active sportswear, and next-to-skin apparels. However, the hydrophilic and polysaccharide characteristics of cellulose materials make them vulnerable to bacterial attack and pathogen infection. The design of antibacterial cellulose fabrics has been a long-term and on-going effort. Fabrication strategies based on the construction of surface micro-/nanostructure, chemical modification, and the application of antibacterial agents have been extensively investigated by many research groups worldwide. This review systematically discusses recent research on super-hydrophobic and antibacterial cellulose fabrics, focusing on morphology construction and surface modification. First, natural surfaces showing liquid-repellent and antibacterial properties are introduced and the mechanisms behind are explained. Then, the strategies for fabricating super-hydrophobic cellulose fabrics are summarized, and the contribution of the liquid-repellent function to reducing the adhesion of live bacteria and removing dead bacteria is elucidated. Representative studies on cellulose fabrics functionalized with super-hydrophobic and antibacterial properties are discussed in detail, and their potential applications are also introduced. Finally, the challenges in achieving super-hydrophobic antibacterial cellulose fabrics are discussed, and the future research direction in this area is proposed. The figure summarizes the natural surfaces and the main fabrication strategies of superhydrophobic antibacterial cellulose fabrics and their potential applications. 7. Functional Fiber Membranes with Antibacterial Properties for Face Masks.
PMID:日期:2023-05-17Reusable face masks are an important alternative for minimizing costs of disposable and surgical face masks during pandemics. Often complementary to washing, a prolonged lifetime of face masks relies on the incorporation of self-cleaning materials. The development of self-cleaning face mask materials requires the presence of a durable catalyst to deactivate contaminants and microbes after long-term use without reducing filtration efficiency. Herein, we generate self-cleaning fibers by functionalizing silicone-based (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) fibrous membranes with a photocatalyst. Coaxial electrospinning is performed to fabricate fibers with a non-crosslinked silicone core within a supporting shell scaffold, followed by thermal crosslinking and removal of the water-soluble shell. Photocatalytic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are immobilized on the PDMS fibers by colloid-electrospinning or post-functionalization procedures. The fibers functionalized with ZnO NPs can degrade a photo-sensitive dye and display antibacterial properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria ( and ) due to the generation of reactive oxygen species upon irradiation with UV light. Furthermore, a single layer of functionalized fibrous membrane shows an air permeability in the range of 80-180 L/ms and 65% filtration efficiency against fine particulate matter with a diameter less than 1.0 µm (PM). 8. Electrospun Nanocomposite Fibrous Membranes for Sustainable Face Mask Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerator with High Air Filtration Efficiency.
PMID:日期:2023-05-15Air pollution caused by the rapid development of industry has always been a great issue to the environment and human being's health. However, the efficient and persistent filtration to PM remains a great challenge. Herein, a self-powered filter with micro-nano composite structure composed of polybutanediol succinate (PBS) nanofiber membrane and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber/polystyrene (PS) microfiber hybrid mats was prepared by electrospinning. The balance between pressure drop and filtration efficiency was achieved through the combination of PAN and PS. In addition, an arched TENG structure was created using the PAN nanofiber/PS microfiber composite mat and PBS fiber membrane. Driven by respiration, the two fiber membranes with large difference in electronegativity achieved contact friction charging cycles. The open-circuit voltage of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can reach to about 8 V, and thus the high filtration efficiency for particles was achieved by the electrostatic capturing. After contact charging, the filtration efficiency of the fiber membrane for PM can reach more than 98% in harsh environments with a PM mass concentration of 23,000 µg/m, and the pressure drop is about 50 Pa, which doesn't affect people's normal breathing. Meanwhile, the TENG can realize self-powered supply by continuously contacting and separating the fiber membrane driven by respiration, which can ensure the long-term stability of filtration efficiency. The filter mask can maintain a high filtration efficiency (99.4%) of PM for 48 consecutive hours in daily environments. 9. A Self-Powered Piezoelectric Nanofibrous Membrane as Wearable Tactile Sensor for Human Body Motion Monitoring and Recognition.
PMID:日期:2023-04-11Wearable sensors have drawn vast interest for their convenience to be worn on body to monitor and track body movements or exercise activities in real time. However, wearable electronics rely on powering systems to function. Herein, a self-powered, porous, flexible, hydrophobic and breathable nanofibrous membrane based on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber has been developed as a tactile sensor with low-cost and simple fabrication for human body motion detection and recognition. Specifically, effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and barium titanate (BTO) as additives to the fiber morphology as well as mechanical and dielectric properties of the piezoelectric nanofiber membrane were investigated. The fabricated BTO@PVDF piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) exhibits the high β-phase content and best overall electrical performances, thus selected for the flexible sensing device assembly. Meanwhile, the nanofibrous membrane demonstrated robust tactile sensing performance that the device exhibits durability over 12,000 loading test cycles, holds a fast response time of 82.7 ms, responds to a wide pressure range of 0-5 bar and shows a high relative sensitivity, especially in the small force range of 11.6 V/bar upon pressure applied perpendicular to the surface. Furthermore, when attached on human body, its unique fibrous and flexible structure offers the tactile sensor to present as a health care monitor in a self-powered manner by translating motions of different movements to electrical signals with various patterns or sequences. 10. A Novel Vision of Reinforcing Nanofibrous Masks with Metal Nanoparticles: Antiviral Mechanisms Investigation.
PMID:日期:2023-04-11Prevention of spreading viral respiratory disease, especially in case of a pandemic such as coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), has been proved impossible without considering obligatory face mask-wearing protocols for both healthy and contaminated populations. The widespread application of face masks for long hours and almost everywhere increases the risks of bacterial growth in the warm and humid environment inside the mask. On the other hand, in the absence of antiviral agents on the surface of the mask, the virus may have a chance to stay alive and be carried to different places or even put the wearers at risk of contamination when touching or disposing the masks. In this article, the antiviral activity and mechanism of action of some of the potent metal and metal oxide nanoparticles in the role of promising virucidal agents have been reviewed, and incorporation of them in an electrospun nanofibrous structure has been considered an applicable method for the fabrication of innovative respiratory protecting materials with upgraded safety levels.
