1. Comparative Experimental Study on the Energy Efficiency of Nontraditional Activations in Catalyst-Free Processes.
PMID:日期:2026-07-23The energy efficiencies of high hydrostatic pressure, microwave, and ultrasonic activation methods were compared to that of traditional heating in three types of reactions, the carbonyl-hydrazine condensation, the Paal-Knorr pyrrole synthesis, and the -acetylation of salicylic acid. Each of the carbonyl-hydrazine condensation and the Paal-Knorr pyrrole synthesis was investigated via two examples using substituted derivatives as starting materials. The energy consumption of the reactions by each method was determined, and the normalized energy consumption, defined as power usage per percent yield, was calculated. Based on the data obtained, high hydrostatic pressure and probe sonication appeared as the most energy efficient activation methods for four of the five model reactions.

2. Enhancing (Super)hydrophobicity of Natural Fibers: An Overview of Methodologies and Their Sustainability Assessment.
PMID:日期:2026-06-11Escalating regulatory pressures have accelerated the development of nature-based alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for hydrophobic textile coatings, driven by concerns over persistence and toxicity. Despite substantial progress, research remains fragmented, with diverse methodologies and limited comparative evaluation of environmental and industrial performance. This review systematically examines wet and dry approaches for applying PFAS-free, natural-based low-surface-energy materials and inducing surface roughness, with a focus on sustainability metrics including energy and water use, solvent consumption, time efficiency, scalability, versatility, waste generation, cost, performance, and durability. Each method is additionally evaluated through an integrated sustainability assessment combining environmental impact and industrial feasibility to identify the most practical and eco-friendly strategies. By highlighting critical bottlenecks and mapping opportunities in process design for biobased chemistries, this review provides a strategic roadmap to accelerate the understanding of the current state and to take an initial step toward upscaling and industrial adoption of PFAS-free alternatives and hydrophobic finishes for natural textiles. In addition, a frequency analysis of reported techniques from 2008 to 2024 reveals temporal trends in methodological development and highlights the dominant approaches and emerging technologies driving the transition toward more sustainable hydrophobic textile engineering.

3. Delamination of Multilayer Plastic Films to Recover Polyethylene with Favorable Mechanical Properties.
PMID:日期:2026-06-09Multilayer plastic films play a critical role in packaging, with each polymer layer contributing specific properties to the multilayer film. Multilayer plastic films are not currently recyclable due to the bound polymers. With multilayer film production of about 20 million metric tons in 2024 and rising, end-of-life treatment becomes pressing. This work presents a scalable solvent-based delamination recycling process that is applied to commercial postindustrial multimaterial films to unbind the materials within a multilayer film by dissolving only the adhesive layer and recover polyethylene (PE) as an intact solid film. Solvent-based delamination is a simple process that allows the complete recovery of materials and solvents used in the process. The delaminating solvent, 88% formic acid in water, induces delamination of PE/PEI/PET and PE/PU/PET films at 70 °C in under an hour. Recovered PE has no contamination detected by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mechanical properties on par with those of virgin resin. The recovery of high-quality solid PE film fit for reprocessing, at low operating temperatures and with closed-loop solvent reuse, promotes delamination as a low energy consumption and environmentally friendly recycling process. PE recovered from delamination can be reused in equivalent products, promoting circularity of multimaterial films.

4. Pd-Modified Metal Organic Frameworks Synthesized via Mechanochemical Extrusion: Versatile Materials for Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling and Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.
PMID:日期:2026-06-09Extrusion-based mechanochemistry offers a sustainable route for materials synthesis. Here, we report the preparation of Pd-modified metal-organic frameworks (UiO-66, UiO-66-NH, and MOF-801) via continuous-flow twin-screw extrusion. The resulting amorphous Pd@MOF materials contain quasi-spherical Pd nanoparticles whose dispersion is strongly influenced by the functional groups of the parent MOFs, with UiO-66-NH providing superior stabilization. The catalysts were evaluated in two applications: the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction and the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Optimization of the Suzuki-Miyaura conditions afforded improved temperature and time parameters compared to literature examples, delivering higher TOFs and meeting CHEM21 First Pass sustainability criteria. A substrate scope analysis, including aryl bromides and chlorides, further confirmed their efficiency, while recycling studies demonstrated catalyst stability. In HER, the highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles maximized active-site availability, with 5Pd@UiO-66-NH-2-200 showing the best performance. The presence of amino groups in the UiO-66-NH support provided an electron-rich environment that enhanced the intrinsic kinetic rate ( ). Overall, extrusion mechanochemistry enables robust, versatile Pd@MOF catalysts for both organic synthesis and energy-related applications.

5. Engineering and Application of a Thermostable MHETase for PET Depolymerization.
PMID:日期:2026-06-08Enzymatic hydrolysis of poly-(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) releases mono-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (MHET) as a major product, the accumulation of which can prolong reactor residence times and complicate downstream monomer separations. The use of a MHETase enzyme can enable MHET hydrolysis to the monomers, terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, but industrial PETases typically operate at thermophilic temperatures and the well-known MHETase from is a mesophilic enzyme, thus warranting the development of thermophilic MHETases. Here, we characterize thermostable MHET-active enzymes from a natural diversity screen by applying a hidden Markov model based on the previously reported, archaeal ferulic acid esterase, PET46. We identified enzymes with higher thermostability than PET46 and quantified their MHETase activity in reactions at 70 °C. The crystal structure of MHT077, the homologue with the highest MHETase activity and an apparent melting temperature ( ) of 94.6 °C, informed site saturation mutagenesis in the active site and lid-domain interface. MHT077 exhibited a ∼100-fold slower unfolding rate at 65 °C than PET46, indicating substantially greater kinetic stability. In parallel, we applied evolution-informed design, a probabilistic model that leverages coevolutionary patterns in large multiple sequence alignments, to improve the activity and thermostability of five ferulic acid esterases. One design, EV-MHT043-5 was identified with a comparable thermostability ( = 96.1 °C) and a 3-fold improvement in its MHETase activity relative to the wildtype enzyme, MHT043. Combination variants of beneficial mutations were screened and afforded a variant, MHT077, which reduced MHET accumulation in bioreactor experiments with postconsumer PET waste. Overall, this study expands the known MHET-hydrolyzing protein scaffolds available for enzymatic PET recycling.

6. {"_":"A Unified Analytical Method Greenness Score () Quantifies How Microscopic Imaging Is Greener Than Conventional Liquid Chromatography.","i":["uAMGS"]}
PMID:日期:2026-06-06Green chemistry is a set of principles for assessing, developing, and implementing methods that are safer, more efficient, and less detrimental to the environment. The analytical method greenness score () is one of many metrics that attempt to evaluate traditional liquid chromatography (LC) based on the energy consumption of the instrument and the safety, health risks, and environmental impact of the solvents employed. Unfortunately, in practice, the is primarily focused on traditional separation methods in the pharmaceutical industry and is not amenable to cutting-edge separation science, including miniaturization. To broaden this scope, the unified Analytical Method Greenness Score () is presented here, which clarifies and expands on the underlying mathematics and incorporates both dimensional and uncertainty analysis, enabling its application to a broader range of analytical techniques. The is used to compare the greenness of two distinct methods: single-molecule microscopy (SMM) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which were used to collect equivalent data. determines that SMM is significantly greener than HPLC due primarily to decreased solvent consumption. Overall, the should allow chemists ranging from undergraduates to industrial PhDs to assess the greenness of a wide range of separations.

7. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Cost Trade-Offs of Renewable Feedstocks for Methyl Methacrylate Production.
PMID:日期:2026-06-02Replacing fossil feedstocks with renewable, drop-in intermediates offers a rapid defossilization strategy while exploiting existing infrastructure. This study quantifies the cradle-to-gate greenhouse gas emissions and raw material costs for methyl methacrylate (MMA) via a representative ethylene ("C2") route using fossil, biomass, and direct-air-capture CO feedstocks. Results suggest that conventional MMA emits 3.43 kg CO-eq kg. Switching to biomass or CO feedstocks yields negative emissions of -0.79 and -1.13 kg CO-eq kg, respectively. Uncertainty analysis demonstrates -0.88 to -0.40 kg CO-eq kg (biomass) and -1.23 to -1.03 kg CO-eq kg (CO). Raw-material costs rise from $0.65 kg (fossil) to $1.52 kg (biomass) and $2.66 kg (CO), driven by renewable ethylene and formaldehyde. The green premium required for cost parity with fossil fuel-based MMA is $0.31-1.04 kg (biomass) and $1.27-2.12 kg (CO), equivalent to a 16-52% and 63-106% markup. Propagated to consumer products, the highest premium inflates prices by <15% for an acrylic sheet and <1% for higher-value items (rear car lamps; LCD televisions). Eliminating the premium requires carbon prices of $72-296 tn CO (biomass) and $269-512 tn CO (CO). These results position biomass drop-ins as a near-term strategy, while CO-derived options need further improvements to reach cost parity.

8. {"_":"Catalytic Upcycling of Barrier Plastic Films by Selective Deoxygenation of Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol over Pd/MoO.","sub":["3"]}
PMID:日期:2026-06-01Multilayer plastic films that combine polar barrier polymers, such as ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), with nonpolar polyolefins, such as polyethylene (PE), are widely used in food packaging, but their recycling remains challenging because of phase separation during reprocessing. Here, we address this limitation through the selective deoxygenation of EVOH over a Pd-promoted molybdenum oxide (MoO) catalyst, enabling C-O bond cleavage while preserving the polymer backbone. The catalytic performance was evaluated in both a monophasic γ-valerolactone (GVL) system and a biphasic GVL/decalin system. While the monophasic GVL system achieved moderate oxygen removal of up to 31.62% after 8 h, the biphasic GVL/decalin system significantly enhanced performance, reaching up to 41.1% oxygen removal in only 1 h, corresponding to a 2.4-2.8-fold increase in the reaction rate. Notably, the biphasic system enabled in situ product separation, with nonpolar deoxygenated products partitioning into the decalin phase, thereby reducing product accumulation on the catalyst surface. Applied to a commercial multilayer film containing 80 wt % LDPE and 20 wt % EVOH, the system achieved near-complete deoxygenation of 83.5% after 1 h over Pd5%/MoO. Kinetic analysis revealed a positive half-order dependence on H over Pd/MoO, highlighting the critical role of Pd in H dissociation and spillover, which facilitates the rate-determining step. Overall, this work establishes an efficient biphasic catalytic platform for upgrading oxygen-containing barrier layers in multilayer plastic films into more recyclable polyolefin-like materials.

9. Lignin Selection Improves the Performance of Porous Carbon Nanofiber Electrodes in Freestanding Supercapacitors.
PMID:日期:2026-06-01Lignin is an attractive precursor for renewable carbon materials due to its low cost and comparatively high carbon yield. The resulting carbons may be used in energy storage devices (supercapacitors and batteries) and structural composites. Since lignin has substantial variability in its chemical structure, influenced by its botanical origin and the method of extraction, this work explores the effect of lignin type on the structure and performance of porous carbon materials, using electrospun carbon nanofibers applied as freestanding supercapacitor electrodes as an example. Precursor nanofiber mats were electrospun from aqueous NaOH solutions of six technical lignins, which originated from commercially relevant biomass types, i.e., hardwood (eucalyptus and beech), softwood (pine/spruce mix), and grass () and three extraction methods (ethanol organosolv, Kraft, and ionosolv), with poly-(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the spinning aid. After stabilization at 250 °C and carbonization/activation at 1000 °C, the supercapacitor performance was evaluated in symmetric two-electrode cells using an aqueous electrolyte (6 M KOH). Correlation of a large number of microstructural characteristics and lignin chemical properties showed that a high micropore (1-2 nm) volume increased gravimetric capacitance of the lignin-derived carbon nanofiber (LCNF) mats (up to 192 F/g at 0.25 A/g), while a high packing density maximized volumetric capacitance (up to 19.9 F/cm at 0.25 A/g). The packing density of the LCNF electrodes was strongly correlated to the viscosity of the lignin-PEO solution, showing potential for engineering material performance through spinning solution composition. Technical lignins with higher contents of phenylpropanoid linkages and hydroxyl groups, especially phenolic hydroxyl groups, exhibited increased microporosity and hence gravimetric capacity but also decreasing packing density and hence volumetric capacitance, indicating a trade-off situation. Finally, by changing the aqueous electrolyte to a water-in-salt electrolyte (12 mol/kg NaNO), the energy density of the best-performing supercapacitor cell was increased from 8.9 to 15.5 Wh/kg, due to the higher stable operating voltage (1.8 vs 1.2 V), delivering competitive performance with typical activated carbon powder-based supercapacitors (5-15 Wh/kg) and highlighting the importance of the whole device design for boosting performance.

10. {"_":"Technoeconomic and Environmental Assessments of CO Methanation and Liquefaction for Climate Mitigation.","sub":["2"]}
PMID:日期:2026-05-25Climate change driven by significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions necessitates accelerating the decarbonization of the energy system. The power-to-X strategy has emerged as a promising pathway to convert renewable electricity into carbon-neutral energy carriers. Synthetic natural gas is an attractive solution due to its compatibility with existing natural gas infrastructures and widespread end-use applications. In this work, a technoeconomic and environmental analysis of liquefied synthetic natural gas production via CO methanation is conducted. The analysis focuses on evaluating the economic feasibility and environmental impact of the methane derived from green H and captured CO in multiple renewable electricity supply scenarios as well as future cost-reduction pathways. Such feasibility indicators are systematically assessed in different renewable electricity supply scenarios to investigate the climate mitigation potential. The assessment is conducted within a cradle-to-gate system boundary covering the production, liquefaction, and storage of synthetic natural gas, with conventional fossil-based natural gas used as the baseline for comparison. The results demonstrate that power-to-methane can show a wide cost range (76.0 to 109.0 $ GJ), which is dependent on electricity prices. Further, it can achieve competitive environmental performances (approximately 0.015 tonCO-eq GJ) and represents a feasible alternative to fossil-based natural gas under favorable renewable electricity integration. This study highlights the potential role of synthetic natural gas as a sustainable energy carrier for long-term climate mitigation.
