This study aimed to evaluate the feeding-related behaviors of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), identify feeding-related factors from caregivers' perspectives, and investigate associations among nutritional status, quality of life, and behavioral problems. This cross-sectional study included 48 children and adolescents with ASD and their parents. Feeding behaviors, feeding problems, parental feeding strategies, caregiver quality of life, and dietary intake patterns were assessed using validated questionnaires (BAMBI, STEP, FSQ, QoLA, and a food frequency questionnaire). The mean age of the children was 8.98 ± 3.86 years, 75.0% were male, and 33.3% were classified as overweight/obese. The mean total BAMBI score was 40.25 ± 8.24, with the highest score observed in the limited variety sub-dimension (20.6 ± 5.87), indicating that restricted food variety was the most prominent feeding concern. Among the STEP sub-dimensions, nutrition-related behavioral problems had the highest mean score (3.27 ± 3.12), while the highest FSQ score was found in the child control of intake sub-dimension (19.33 ± 6.14). The mean QoLA Part A and Part B scores were 91.0 ± 16.53 and 59.88 ± 19.27, respectively. A significant positive correlation was found between BAMBI and STEP total scores (p = 0.009), whereas BAMBI total score was negatively correlated with QoLA Part A score (p = 0.039). STEP total score was positively associated with the QoLA Part B score (p = 0.004). Food selectivity and feeding problems are common in children and adolescents with ASD and are associated with lower parental quality of life in both affected individuals and their caregivers, highlighting the need for early, family-centered multidisciplinary nutritional interventions.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects around 2.8% of the population, yet early diagnosis remains challenging and may delay beneficial interventions. Atypical sensory processing and feeding difficulties are frequently reported in ASD and have been discussed as early behavioral correlates. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine associations between these features and to delineate behavioral patterns that may support early developmental assessment. Studies published until November 15, 2023, were included if they assessed feeding behavior alongside sensory processing or multisensory integration. Articles without original data were excluded. Risk of bias was evaluated using the QUIPS tool, and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023483136). We searched PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Scopus. For continuous outcomes, we calculated mean differences (MDs), standardized mean differences (SMDs) and pooled correlation coefficients. A total of 46 studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 17 contributed to meta-analysis. Children with ASD showed more frequent and severe mealtime behavioral problems than neurotypical peers, with a large difference in BAMBI total scores (SMD = 1.41, 95% CI [0.53, 2.30]). Sensory differences were most pronounced in the tactile domain (SMD = -1.80, 95% CI [-2.52, -1.08]), also evident in taste-smell, visual, and auditory modalities. A moderate correlation was found between sensory processing and feeding difficulties (|r|=0.47, 95% CI [-0.55, -0.44]). Our findings demonstrate robust cross-sectional associations between sensory processing differences and feeding difficulties in children with ASD, outlining a clinically relevant behavioral pattern that may guide early developmental assessment and complement existing ASD screening recommendations.

This study aimed to examine the associations between family dynamics and parenting experiences among parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). A cross-sectional survey was conducted using convenience sampling among 341 parents of children with NDDs recruited from special education institutions and public healthcare facilities. Data were collected via an online questionnaire comprising the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, Parenting Sense of Competence Scale, Parental Bonding Instrument, Family Adaptation Partnership Growth Affection Resolve Questionnaire, and Family Closeness and Adaptability Scale. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression were performed to examine interrelationships among variables. Multicollinearity was assessed using variance inflation factors. A total of 341 parents participated, reporting on children primarily diagnosed with developmental delay (DD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and intellectual disabilities (ID). Correlation analyses revealed significant negative relationships between parenting stress and parenting style (r = -0.626, p < 0.01), family functioning (r = -0.831, p < 0.01), and family setting (r = -0.792, p < 0.01). Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated that parenting style (β = -0.159 to -0.157, p < 0.001), family functioning (β = -0.746, p < 0.001), and family setting (β = - 0.733, p < 0.001) were significant negative predictors of parenting stress. A suppression effect was observed for parenting efficacy, which emerged as a significant positive predictor (β = 0.097 to 0.182, p < 0.01) only after accounting for family-level variables. VIF values remained below 2.5 across all models, confirming the absence of multicollinearity. Family functioning and family environment were associated with lower levels of parenting stress among parents of children with NDDs. The suppression effect observed for parenting efficacy suggests that its association with parenting stress may be influenced by the broader family context. Longitudinal studies are warranted to clarify the temporal and directional relationships among these factors.

Siblings of autistic individuals (ASD-Sibs) report, on average, significantly less closeness and warmth in sibling relationships than siblings of non-disabled individuals (ND-Sibs). However, findings on other aspects of life satisfaction on well-being between ASD-Sibs and ND-sibs is more mixed. Therefore, understanding some potential mechanisms by which aspects of the sibling relationship relate to well-being for ASD-Sibs and ND-Sibs is needed. In particular, understanding how aspects of emotion regulation may relate to the sibling relationship may provide pathways for future support strategies. The current study compared 42 non-disabled young adult siblings of autistic individuals to 145 non-disabled young adult siblings of non-disabled individuals. Participants completed an online survey with measures of sibling warmth and closeness, emotional reappraisal and emotional suppression, gratitude, life satisfaction, distress, and optimism. Moderated mediation analysis examined whether pathways amongst variables differed between ASD-Sibs and ND-Sibs. The ASD-Sibs reported significantly lower levels of warmth and closeness and significantly higher levels of distress. ASD-Sibs also reported greater use of emotional suppression. Both emotional suppression and reappraisal partially mediated the relationships between the sibling relationship and well-being variables, though such relationships did not significantly differ by group. The current results indicate that strategies of emotional regulation may impact the relationship between sibling closeness/warmth and well-being among ASD-Sibs. More research is needed to determine how changes in emotional regulation may help improve both the relationship and well-being.

Early childhood is a critical period for optimizing developmental outcomes. Although early social-communication differences may be observable before a formal diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), clinical diagnosis often occurs around age three. This study compared retrospective home-video indicators of pre-pragmatic, receptive-language, and expressive-language behaviors in infants aged 0-12 months who were later diagnosed with ASD and typically developing (TD) peers. The aim was to identify group-level candidate early behavioral indicators rather than to evaluate diagnostic or screening accuracy. A single-center retrospective case-control design was used. Home videos recorded from birth to 12 months were analyzed for 30 children (ASD, n = 15; TD, n = 15). Communication behaviors were coded as present or absent using structured checklists across three domains: receptive language (61 items), expressive language (41 items), and pre-pragmatic skills (19 items). Item-level between-group differences were tested using two-sided Fisher's exact tests; effect sizes were estimated as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Benjamini-Hochberg false discovery rate (FDR) correction was applied within each domain. Of the 121 assembled outcomes, 120 were analyzable. Overall, 63 of 120 items (52.5%) differed between groups at p < .05, and 55 of 120 (45.8%) remained significant after FDR correction. The highest proportion of FDR-significant differences was observed in receptive language (35/61, 57.4%), followed by expressive language (15/41, 36.6%) and pre-pragmatic skills (5/18, 27.8%). Directionality was highly consistent, with 54 of 55 FDR-significant items showing lower endorsement in the ASD group. Infants later diagnosed with ASD showed lower endorsement across a broad range of pre-pragmatic and early language behaviors, particularly in receptive language. These findings identify candidate early behavioral indicators and support the potential adjunctive value of retrospective home-video review in developmental history taking. They do not validate a screening or diagnostic method.

The purpose of this review was to conduct an umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analytic syntheses of comprehensive applied behavior analytic interventions for young autistic children. We searched six electronic databases and conducted supplemental searches through December 2025. We examined two primary outcomes (IQ, adaptive behavior) and four secondary outcomes (communication, social, daily living skills, and symptomatology), conducted assessments for risks of bias, and examined primary study overlap using the corrected covered area (CCA). We included six systematic reviews with meta-analytic syntheses including 36 unique studies (CCA = 20.56%) with 2,241 child participants with ASD in this umbrella review. For IQ, three meta-analyses reported standardized mean difference effect sizes (SMD) greater than 0.50 and three meta-analyses reported mean difference effect sizes (MD) greater than 11.98 (on a scale with a SD = 15). For adaptive behavior, three reviews reported SMD greater than 0.35 and three reviews reported MD equal to 5.92 or greater. Effects on secondary outcomes were reported less frequently across reviews with greater variability in findings. The findings of this umbrella review demonstrated consistent, replicated evidence that comprehensive early interventions based on the technologies of applied behavior analysis. Autistic children receiving the intervention had superior outcomes to autistic children in the comparison conditions for IQ and adaptive behavior for a majority of the participants who received the intervention. This study investigated whether school exclusion during secondary school mediates the association between Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and adolescent internalising and externalising mental health difficulties. We analysed data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (N = 10,228, waves 1-7). Parents reported ASC diagnosis at ages 5-11 and whether their child had been excluded at ages 11-14. Internalising and externalising symptoms were self-reported by adolescents at age 17 on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Confounders were mapped onto a Directed Acyclic Graph. Causal mediation analyses, using the g-formula for randomised interventional analogues, estimated direct and indirect effects while accounting for these confounders without biasing the causal pathway. Autism was associated with higher internalising and externalising scores, with autistic adolescents more likely to experience school exclusion than peers. School exclusion partially mediated the association between ASC and externalising symptoms (indirect effect = 0.03 (95% CI: 0.004, 0.06, p = 0.024) . No evidence of mediation was found for internalising symptoms. School exclusion acts as one modifiable environmental mechanism contributing to externalising difficulties in autistic adolescents, likely through the loss of protective school supports. Preventative, autism-informed strategies that reduce reliance on exclusion and provide appropriate support could form part of wider efforts to improve mental health outcomes in autistic adolescents.

Multimodal human-computer interaction (HCI) is increasingly used in interventions for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but technological and methodological heterogeneity limits cross-study comparison. This scoping review mapped recent evidence using a pathway framework defined by the dominant interaction mechanism. Following JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidance, we searched Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and IEEE Xplore for peer-reviewed empirical publications from 2019 to 2025 and conducted backward and forward citation searches. Publications were classified into four mutually exclusive pathways: extended reality (XR), socially assistive robotics (SAR), exergames or embodied-interaction systems (EXG), and hybrid or adaptive systems (HYB). Seventy-two publications were included: XR (n = 25, 34.7%), SAR (n = 23, 31.9%), EXG (n = 13, 18.1%), and HYB (n = 11, 15.3%). Social communication appeared in 49 publications (68.1%) and cognition or executive function in 32 (44.4%), whereas daily-living or safety-related skills appeared in 5 (6.9%) and sensory processing in 3 (4.2%). Eighteen publications (25.0%) used randomized designs, and five (6.9%) used physiologically or neurally driven closed-loop adaptation. The pathway framework moves beyond device-based categories by focusing on the mechanisms that organize intervention. This framework helps align system design with intervention goals and participant needs in ASD research. Future research should strengthen pathway-specific reporting, longitudinal evaluation in real-world settings, and transparency of adaptive mechanisms.

This study examined the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Burnout Assessment for Developmental Disability Settings (BADDS), a self-report scale for measuring workplace stressors that contribute to burnout specifically among behavioral health providers for autism and related developmental disabilities. We conducted an online survey of 566 autism service providers that comprised the BADDS, the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey (MBI), Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS), and the Patient Health Questionnaire - 9 (PHQ-9). Conducted confirmatory factor analysis based on (Bottini et al., 2026) showed poor fit. An expert panel cut 17 redundant items. Exploratory factor analysis on the remaining 56 items resulted in further reduction to 39 items. To evaluate the validity of the 39-item version, the BADDS was compared to the MBI, AWS, and PHQ-9. The 39-item BADDS had six factors: Physical Safety, Training & Supervision, Stakeholder Interactions, Professional Development, Stress Management, and Ethics & Values. Across subscales, internal reliability ranged 0.75-0.92. Correlations with MBI and AWS subscales ranged from 0.04 to 0.60. Elevations across BADDS subscales were associated with incremental increases in MBI scores. The BADDS subscales showed solid internal consistency. Consistent increases in burnout symptoms (MBI scores) with elevations on BADDS subscales, supporting convergent validity. Additional research to confirm the psychometrics and utility of the BADDS is warranted.

Siblings of individuals with disabilities, including autism, often plan to assume future caregiving roles. Yet, most extant research relies on convenience samples wherein the autistic brother/sister does not have distressing behaviors. In the limited research about siblings of individuals with distressing behaviors, siblings often report negative and distant sibling relationships. To discern the perceived effects of distressing behavior on siblings and its impact on future caregiving roles, it is critical to explore the perspectives of adult siblings of autistic individuals with distressing behaviors. We conducted individual interviews with sixteen siblings of autistic adults with distressing behaviors. Using Trauma Exposure Theory and the Hidden Talents Framework, we explored their perspectives including positive, negative, and caregiving effects. There was a nuanced effect of having a sibling with distressing behavior with participants reporting some benefits (e.g., increased resilience) and some negative impacts (e.g., worse mental health). Further, participants reported effects on their life choices (e.g., decisions about dating, marriage, and family planning) that conflict with extant research. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
