1. Offline Reinforcement Learning for Adaptive Support in AI-Assisted Decision-Making.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2026-08-01AI decision-support tools typically offer a fixed type of assistance, like AI recommendations and explanations, regardless of the specific decision, individual, or broader context. This fixed design has been shown to hinder both human-AI decision accuracy and human skill improvement in the task. We posit that AI assistance needs to be dynamic, changing in response to contextual factors (e.g., AI uncertainty, task difficulty), individual differences, and specified objectives (e.g., decision accuracy, skill improvement). To enable such adaptive support, we propose reinforcement learning (RL) as a general approach for modeling human-AI decision-making to optimize human-AI interaction for diverse objectives. RL enables optimizing various objectives in AI-assisted decision-making by tailoring and adaptively providing decision support to humans - the right type of assistance, to the right person, at the right time. We instantiated our approach with two objectives: human-AI accuracy on the decision-making task and human skill improvement (i.e., learning about the task) and learned decision support policies from previous human-AI interaction data. We compared the optimized policies against several baselines in AI-assisted decision-making. Across two experiments (N = 316 and N = 964), our results consistently demonstrated that people interacting with policies optimized for accuracy achieve significantly higher accuracy - and even human-AI complementarity - compared to those interacting with any other type of AI support. Our results further indicated that human learning was more difficult to optimize than accuracy. While the policies learned the best available actions to optimize learning, participants who interacted with learning-optimized policies showed significant learning improvement only at times. Our research (1) demonstrates offline RL to be a promising approach to model the dynamics of human-AI decision-making, leading to policies that may optimize various objectives and provide novel insights about the AI-assisted decision-making space, and (2) emphasizes the importance of considering skill improvement and other human-centric objectives beyond accuracy in AI-assisted decision-making, opening up the novel research challenge of optimizing human-AI interaction for such objectives.

2. Informing the Design of Individualized Self-Management Regimens from the Human, Data, and Machine Learning Perspectives.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2025-08-01Intelligent systems for self-management can help patients and improve quality of life. However, designing AI-based systems is challenging because designers need to account not only for user needs, but also for capabilities and practical constraints of underlying algorithms. We propose and implement a human-centered AI framework to align human and technological requirements and constraints that can guide design of intelligent systems for personal health. We use concepts from a machine learning technique, reinforcement learning, to elicit user needs, through directed content analysis of user interviews, and uncover practical data constraints, through analysis of "in the wild" user engagement logs from a self-monitoring app. We gather and triangulate human-machine-data requirements for a self-management tool for individuals with endometriosis - a poorly understood, complex chronic condition with no reliable treatment. We present recommendations for developing a system that aligns with needs, capabilities, and constraints from human user, data, and machine learning perspectives.

3. FormA11y - A tool for remediating PDF forms for accessibility: Designing a PDF Form Remediation Tool.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2024-01-01PDF documents are usually not born-accessible, and so document authors need to put in additional work (remediation) to make them accessible for people with disabilities. Unfortunately, this step is often overlooked and hard to execute, resulting in a large number of inaccessible PDF documents on the internet. Previously, there have been research efforts to investigate potential solutions for remediating PDF documents for accessibility. However, most of the existing research focuses on accessibility of long or scientific PDF documents meant for passive reading. PDF documents come in different types, and this research project focuses on a distinct type of PDF document-forms-where the user is required to interact with the PDF document and enter data. Through our research work we identified that the PDF form remediation process is non-intuitive, repetitive, and overwhelming due to the high-information density of PDF forms, and existing research and tools do not yet address the challenges. Our research work culminated in the creation of a tool - FormA11y - that addresses these challenges by making the repetitive and painstaking process of form remediation easier. To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of FormA11y against the industry standard tool - Adobe Acrobat - for PDF form remediation, we performed a within-subject user study with 20 participants. With FormA11y, users remediated forms 2.8 times faster while creating more accurately accessible PDF forms.

4. Incloodle-Classroom: Technology for Inclusive Joint Media Engagement in a Neurodiverse Kindergarten Classroom.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2024-01-01Enabling opportunities for young children with disabilities to co-engage in learning activities alongside their non-disabled peers is essential for promoting equity in early childhood education. We investigate how collaborative technology can be designed to support young neurodivergent and neurotypical children in playing together. By integrating theories and methods from design, HCI, and the learning sciences, we iteratively designed, developed, and evaluated a novel tablet application called Incloodle-Classroom (Incloodle in short), that takes into account the needs of neurodiverse groups of children and the adults who support them during play. We deployed Incloodle in a kindergarten classroom of 15 neurodivergent and 16 neurotypical children over a 10-week period. Using interaction analysis, we present rich empirical understandings of how children interacted with each other, with adults, and with Incloodle. In doing so, we contribute new theoretical underpinnings to collaborative and accessible technology design, extending joint media engagement to encompass inclusivity and equity.

5. Transitioning Cognitive Aids into Decision Support Platforms: Requirements and Design Guidelines.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2023-06-01Digital cognitive aids have the potential to serve as clinical decision support platforms, triggering alerts about process delays and recommending interventions. In this mixed-methods study, we examined how a digital checklist for pediatric trauma resuscitation could trigger decision support alerts and recommendations. We identified two criteria that cognitive aids must satisfy to support these alerts: (1) context information must be entered in a timely, accurate, and standardized manner, and (2) task status must be accurately documented. Using co-design sessions and near-live simulations, we created two checklist features to satisfy these criteria: a form for entering the pre-hospital information and a progress slider for documenting the progression of a multi-step task. We evaluated these two features in the wild, contributing guidelines for designing these features on cognitive aids to support alerts and recommendations in time- and safety-critical scenarios.

6. Iterative Design and Prototyping of Computer Vision Mediated Remote Sighted Assistance.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2022-08-01Remote sighted assistance (RSA) is an emerging navigational aid for people with visual impairments (PVI). Using scenario-based design to illustrate our ideas, we developed a prototype showcasing potential applications for computer vision to support RSA interactions. We reviewed the prototype demonstrating real-world navigation scenarios with an RSA expert, and then iteratively refined the prototype based on feedback. We reviewed the refined prototype with 12 RSA professionals to evaluate the desirability and feasibility of the prototyped computer vision concepts. The RSA expert and professionals were engaged by, and reacted insightfully and constructively to the proposed design ideas. We discuss what we learned about key resources, goals, and challenges of the RSA prosthetic practice through our iterative prototype review, as well as implications for the design of RSA systems and the integration of computer vision technologies into RSA.

7. Adopting Diffractive Reading to Advance HCI Research: A Case Study on Technology for Aging.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2021-01-01Researchers in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) have long developed technologies for older adults. Recently, researchers are engaging in critical reflections of these approaches. IoT for aging in place is one area around which these conflicting discourses have converged, likely in part driven by government and industry interest. This article introduces diffractive analysis as an approach that examines difference to yield new empirical understandings about our methods and the topics we study. We constructed three analyses of a dataset collected at an IoT design workshop and then conducted a diffractive analysis. We present themes from this analysis regarding the ways that participants are inscribed in our research, considerations related to transferability and novelty between work centered on older adults and other work, and insights about methodologies. Our discussion contributes implications for researchers to form teams and account for their roles in research, as well as recommendations how diffractive analysis can support other research agendas.

8. Susceptibility to Spear-Phishing Emails: Effects of Internet User Demographics and Email Content.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2019-09-01Phishing is fundamental to cyber attacks. This research determined the effect of Internet user age and email content such as weapons of influence (persuasive techniques that attackers can use to lure individuals to fall for an attack) and life domains (a specific topic or aspect of an individual's life that attackers can focus an emails on) on spear-phishing (targeted phishing) susceptibility. One-hundred young and 58 older users received, without their knowledge, daily simulated phishing emails over 21 days. A browser plugin recorded their clicking on links in the emails as an indicator of their susceptibility. Forty-three percent of users fell for the simulated phishing emails, with older women showing the highest susceptibility. While susceptibility in young users declined across the study, susceptibility in older users remained stable. The relative effectiveness of the attacks differed by weapons of influence and life domains with age-group variability. In addition, older compared to young users reported lower susceptibility awareness. These findings support effects of Internet user demographics and email content on susceptibility to phishing and emphasize the need for personalization of the next generation of security solutions.

9. Going to School on a Robot: Robot and User Interface Design Features That Matter.
PMID:期刊:DOI:日期:2019-07-01Telepresence robots have recently been introduced as a way for children who are homebound due to medical conditions to attend their local schools. These robots provide an experience that is a much richer learning experience than the typical home instruction services of 4-5 hours a week. Because the robots on the market today were designed for use by adults in work settings, they do not necessarily fit children in school settings. We carried out a study of 19 homebound students, interviewing and observing them as well as interviewing their parents, teachers, administrators, and classmates. We organized our findings along the lines of the various tasks and settings the child is in, developing a , then -, -, and . Although some features of current robots fit children in school settings, we discovered a number of cases where there was a mismatch or additional features are needed. Our findings are described according to analytic frames that capture user experiences. Based on these user-centered findings, we provide recommendations for designing the robot and user interface to better fit children using robots for school and learning activities.

10. Lessons from Practice: Designing Tools to Facilitate Individualized Support for Quitting Smoking.
PMID:期刊:日期:2017-01-01Many health care providers, with a variety of trainings, counsel clients on quitting smoking on a day-to-day basis. In their clinical practice, they draw from and adapt guidelines and research-based strategies to fit individual client situations and challenges. Designers of technologies to support quitting smoking can learn from these real world practices to create tools that better adapt to individual differences. We present findings from interviews with 28 providers with diverse experiences in smoking cessation counselling. Through analysis of their individualization strategies, challenges, and perceptions of technology, we find that providers: (1) individualize context appropriate coping strategies by involving clients in brainstorming, (2) emphasize the need to support nicotine withdrawal in clients, (3) mitigate social triggers and mediate social support for clients, and (4) need to navigate dependencies with other providers for managing medications and comorbid health conditions of clients. With this empirical understanding, we extend the discussion on the design of technology to support quitting smoking, highlight current barriers to individualization, and suggest future opportunities to address these barriers.
