1. Sex differences in macrovascular responsiveness: Acute effects of hot water immersion versus aerobic exercise in overweight older adults.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-25Recent studies have focused on the potential benefits of heat exposure for cardiovascular health. However, the acute effects of heat therapy on conduit arteries remain unclear, particularly in overweight and obese older males and females. This study aimed to compare core temperature (T), heart rate (HR), and brachial, femoral, and carotid artery diameter and velocity (Doppler ultrasound) responses to an acute exercise (EXE) session versus hot water immersion (HWI), and to determine whether physiological responses are sex-dependent. Twenty-five overweight older adults (10♂/15♀; age: 59 ± 7, BMI: 29.4 ± 3.4 kg/m) underwent two experimental sessions (30 min): EXE (60-70% HR) and HWI (40°C). HWI resulted in a larger increase in T across the session with the largest difference at 30 min (0.9 ± 0.3 vs. 0.7 ± 0.3°C; P = 0.024). No differences were observed in T between males and females (interaction P = 0.271). HWI induced a lower rise in HR (♂ 40 ± 18 vs. ♀ 51 ± 12 bpm at 30 min; P = 0.013) than EXE, and females exhibited a larger change in HR after HWI than males (♂ 27 ± 12 vs. ♀ 48 ± 17 bpm; P = 0.003). HWI also induced a larger reduction in systolic (-6 ± 10 vs. 1 ± 7 mmHg; P = 0.012) and diastolic BP (-10 ± 9 vs. -2 ± 5 mmHg; P = 0.001) than EXE, but with no sex differences. HWI induced a larger increase in brachial diameter, brachial and femoral velocity, brachial and femoral flow, and shear rate than EXE. Females exhibited significantly higher change in femoral velocity (♀ 26 ± 8 vs. ♂ 17 ± 6 cm/s; P = 0.011) and shear rate (♀ 157 ± 55 vs. ♂ 98 ± 38 cm/s; P = 0.008) in response to HWI than males. A single session of HWI induced larger vascular responses than exercise. Males and females both benefit, but somewhat differently and possibly via different mechanisms.

2. Somatosensory processing in long COVID fatigue and its relations with physiological and psychological factors.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-25We aimed to quantify somatosensory processing in long COVID and interactions between somatosensory processing, fatigability, fatigue, autonomic function, mood and illness beliefs. Eighty-eight participants (44 long COVID and 44 controls) were invited to complete two testing sessions, where fatigue was induced by either a cognitive or a physical task in a cross-over design; all participants completed at least one session. Baseline questionnaires assessed trait fatigue, autonomic symptoms, mood and illness beliefs. Pre- and post-task measures included somatosensory processing, state fatigue, perceived effort and heart rate variability (HRV). Group differences and task-related changes were analysed using multivariate and linear mixed models. There was no multivariate group effect on baseline somatosensory measures (P = 0.172), nor did they change following exertion or associate with post-exertion fatigue. Long COVID participants reported greater fatigue than controls, with 64% meeting criteria for severe fatigue. State fatigue was greater at baseline, throughout both exertion tasks (all P < 0.001), and increased more during exertion compared with controls. Despite this, cognitive and physical performance changed similarly across tasks, with no group differences in fatigability (P = 0.199-0.441). Long COVID participants had lower resting HRV, indicating autonomic dysfunction, but HRV was not associated with fatigue. Only group status (P < 0.001) and pre-task fatigue (P < 0.001) were associated with post-exertion fatigue. Within long COVID participants, greater depression (P < 0.001) and perceived illness threat (P = 0.033) were associated with greater trait fatigue. The absence of somatosensory abnormalities provides no support for the sensory attenuation model of fatigue in long COVID.

3. Ovariectomy, but not moderate intermittent hypoxia, promotes respiratory instability and risk of obesity in adult female rats.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-24Sleep apnoea (SA) is a prevalent and complex respiratory disorder associated with recurrent interruptions of air flow during sleep. SA causes sleep fragmentation and intermittent hypoxia which leads to numerous negative health consequences. While SA is typically more common in men, its prevalence in women increases sharply after menopause, implicating the loss of ovarian hormones in its pathogenesis. Despite the potential of hormone replacement therapy to modulate SA, the physiological mechanisms linking loss of ovarian function to SA remain unclear. Using an integrative approach, we investigated the combined effects of surgical removal of the ovaries (ovariectomy; OVX) and a 7-day moderate intermittent hypoxia protocol (IH; 30s at 0.10, 10 cycles/h, 8 h/day) on respiratory, metabolic, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine regulation, including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation and leptin levels in adult female rats. OVX increased apnoea frequency, respiratory instability and ventilatory responses to O (10%, 120 s) but not CO (5%, 10 min). However, contrary to our hypothesis, moderate IH did not worsen metabolic or cardiorespiratory dysfunction caused by OVX. OVX did not affect mean arterial pressure or heart rate but augmented weight gain and activated the HPA axis. Thus, our results indicate that OVX independently promotes apnoeas and activation of the stress axis and this is not worsened by additional exposure to moderate IH. This underscores the predominant role of ovarian hormone deficiency in SA-related pathophysiologies, highlighting menopause as a critical window for vulnerability to respiratory problems.

4. Quantitative MRI changes in neck muscle size and composition following long-duration spaceflight.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-24Long-duration spaceflight poses several challenges to human health, including muscle loss and fat deposition. To mitigate these effects, exercise countermeasures are prescribed. This study aimed to measure neck muscle size and composition changes with long-duration spaceflight using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and examine associations with in-flight exercise modality and volume. Nine astronauts (mission duration: 7.1 ± 1.8 months) underwent pre- and post-flight 3T Dixon MRI of the cervical spine. Cross-sectional area (CSA) and muscle fat fraction (MFF) were measured bilaterally in 11 neck muscles. Mixed-effects models assessed monthly percentage changes and associations with resistance (ARED), cycle ergometer and treadmill training volumes. The CSA and MFF of most neck muscles did not change across long-duration missions. CSA increased for the sternocleidomastoid (+1.21%/month, P = 0.004) and the rhomboid minor (+1.71%/month, P = 0.057). Semispinalis capitis MFF increased (+1.10%/month, P = 0.051). More ARED repetitions of different exercises were associated with CSA increases in four muscles (P < 0.001-0.097) and MFF reductions in three muscles (P = 0.040-0.093). More cycle ergometer time was associated with a CSA increase in the sternocleidomastoid (P = 0.053) and an MFF increase in the scalenus medius (P = 0.019), while treadmill time was linked to CSA decreases in the trapezius (P = 0.095) and rhomboid minor (P = 0.047). Neck muscle size and composition were generally preserved during modern long-duration missions in which structured exercise countermeasures were performed. Because all crewmembers completed in-flight exercises, these findings should not be interpreted as evidence that exercise countermeasures prevented neck muscle changes.

5. Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus have preserved sensory nerve-mediated dilatation in the cutaneous microvasculature.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-23Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease than healthy control (HC) women who had an uncomplicated pregnancy. Microvascular endothelial dysfunction, mediated by reduced nitric oxide (NO)-dependent mechanisms, persists after GDM. However, it is unknown whether cutaneous sensory nerve-mediated dilatation is similarly reduced in these women. We hypothesised that women with a history of GDM would exhibit attenuated sensory nerve-mediated vasodilatation compared with HC women. One intradermal microdialysis fibre was placed in the ventral forearm of 30 HC and 22 GDM women for the local delivery of lactated Ringer's solution during a local heating protocol (42°C; 0.1°C s). The heater remained at 42°C until blood flow plateaued (∼40 min). Next, the site was perfused with 15 mM N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (a NO synthase inhibitor; ∼40 min) to determine NO-dependent dilatation. Red blood cell flux was measured by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Cutaneous vascular conductance was calculated (CVC = LDF/mean arterial pressure) and normalized to maximum (28 mM sodium nitroprusside + local heat 43°C). The initial sensory nerve-mediated peak response was not different between groups (P = 0.623). The endothelium-dependent plateau (P < 0.001) and NO contribution to the plateau (P < 0.01) were attenuated in GDM compared with HC women. Our findings suggest that despite reductions in endothelium- and NO-dependent dilatation, women who had GDM do not exhibit impairments in local cutaneous sensory nerve-mediated vasodilatation compared with HC women.

7. Effects of 1 Gray radiation on the biophysical properties of the tibia and femur from hindlimb-suspended rats.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-19Long-term space travel (e.g. travel to Mars) will greatly exceed the recommended lifetime radiation dose of 600 millisieverts (mSv) and have a detrimental effect on skeletal fragility. Our objective was to determine if 1 Gray (GY) radiation impacts the biomechanical properties of the tibia and femur from rats under microgravity. Hindlimb-suspended male Sprague-Dawley rats were irradiated (IR) with 1 GY (+IR) or used as control (-IR); after 4 weeks they were sacrificed to obtain the femur and tibia. Using the three-point bending technique, we found radiation had no effect on the flexure force/bending and stiffness of the femur. However, the tibias from the +IR rats demonstrated 37% less flexure force/bending and stiffness than -IR rats. Bone elemental analysis was determined using a scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy; there was no difference in the calcium/phosphorus ratio between +IR and -IR groups. This study provides pilot data which suggest that low dose radiation exposure has a greater impact on the smaller hindlimb bones from hindlimb-suspended rats.

8. Increased corticospinal excitability after rest with short term motor performance.
8. 短期运动表现后休息状态下的皮质脊髓兴奋性增加PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-18Motor skill performance is associated with early changes in corticospinal excitability (CSE), yet the influence of rest periods surrounding motor activity on these neurophysiological responses remains unclear. This study examined how matched pre- and post-activity rest intervals influence CSE following novel fine motor task performance. Twenty-one healthy adults (18-39 years) participated in a single-session, within-subject protocol consisting of a 30-min rest period (R1), 30 min of videogame-based motor activity using a guitar controller (A1), and a second 30-min rest period (R2). Transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with surface electromyography assessed corticospinal excitability and activity of intracortical circuits in the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and abductor digiti minimi (ADM). Gameplay performance significantly improved during the activity block, demonstrating short-term performance improvements took place. The 1mVSTIM MEP measure in FDI demonstrated a significant main effect across the three time points in the block, and pairwise comparisons showed that the 1mVSTIM MEP was significantly larger after R2 when compared with R1, and for R2 compared to A1. There were no significant changes in long interval intra-cortical inhibition, short intracortical inhibition or intracortical facilitation for the FDI. No changes were detected in the ADM. These findings suggest that adequate pre- and post-task rest may facilitate increased corticospinal excitability following novel motor task performance without altering measures of inhibition or facilitation.

9. No evidence of higher peak heat tolerance in the afternoon or with opportunity for thermal behaviour during low-intensity work in uncompensable heat.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-15Heat tolerance is known to be limited by high brain temperature, but most findings pertain to strenuous exercise following artificially altered baseline temperature or with limited opportunity for behaviour. Therefore, we investigated the hypotheses that thermal perceptions, hyperventilation and cerebrovascular responses would be exacerbated in: (1) the afternoon relative to morning; and (2) the absence of opportunity for behavioural thermoregulation. Thirteen habitually active participants (seven females) cycled at 25% peak power wearing a water-perfused suit (∼48°C) until volitional tolerance on three occasions, once in the morning (AM) and twice in the afternoon (PM), with or without access to face fanning with mist (∼1.7 m/s). Heating took ∼2 h. Core temperature (T) was 0.35°C lower in AM at baseline (95% confidence interval: -0.55°C, -0.16°C; P < 0.001, Hedges' g = 1.673) but not at tolerance (39.10°C ± 0.71°C vs. 39.11°C ± 0.50°C; P = 0.947, g = 0.024), hence the rise was greater (95% confidence interval: 0.00°C, 0.80°C; P = 0.047, g = 0.651). The fan did not confer higher T tolerance (95% confidence interval: -0.44°C, 0.24°C; P = 0.764, g = 0.050). The modelled T thresholds for heat discomfort and hyperventilation were ∼0.23°C lower in AM, but sensitivities did not differ reliably or with fan availability (P ≥ 0.098). Internal carotid artery flow was similar across time of day (P = 0.904) and showed little effect of heating. Changes in estimated intracranial pressure did not differ reliably between conditions. In conclusion, thermal reserve was smaller in PM by virtue of higher baseline, and psychophysical, ventilatory and cerebrovascular responses were not reliably different. For most individuals, an opportunity for behaviour did not improve discomfort, hyperventilation or tolerance.

10. Long-term endurance running training and testosterone daily variation in ageing men; a comparative cross-sectional study.
PMID:DOI:日期:2026-09-15The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between long-term endurance running training and daily variation in testosterone, which is known to diminish during ageing, in a comparative, cross-sectional study. We recruited 45 male participants into four groups [young athletes (YA), young sedentary (YS), master athletes (MA) and elderly sedentary (ES)] and performed anthropometry, strength and ergometry tests. Morning (AM) and afternoon (PM) venous blood samples were collected to evaluate testosterone daily variation, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), cortisol and estradiol, and we calculated free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone and the free androgen index. Two-way and three-way ANOVAs followed by Bonferroni's multiple comparisons tests were performed. The free testosterone and free androgen index showed a significant PM decrease in the MA group (P = 0.0009 and 0.0021, respectively), comparable to YA and YS; however, in the ES group there was no difference between AM and PM values (both P > 0.9999). SHBG levels were significantly increased by both the age (P = 0.0001) and activity (P = 0.0016) factors, leading to a significant decrease in free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone and free androgen index. In the peak power output parameters of ergometry, expressed in both absolute and relative values, MA achieved values comparable to YS, significantly higher than ES (P = 0.0020 and P < 0.0001, respectively) and lower than YA (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, long-term endurance running training in elderly men might be associated with the presence of daily variation in free testosterone and higher performance levels in comparison to sedentary counterparts, but it might contribute to age-related changes in SHBG and related testosterone fraction levels.
