1. {"_":"A reference low-pressure CO adsorption isotherm for zeolite 13X: results of an interlaboratory study.","sub":["2"]}
PMID:日期:2026-08-28This paper reports the results of an international interlaboratory study sponsored by the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) and led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on the measurement of low-pressure CO adsorption isotherms at 25 °C on zeolite 13X (NIST research grade test material 10257). Eighteen laboratories participated in the study and contributed 21 datasets. From these data, a consensus reference isotherm, along with the 95% uncertainty interval ( ), were determined and reported. Results indicate the material is suitable for development into NIST reference material, which will become the first zeolitic reference material in beaded form at NIST. 2. Effective macropore diffusivity of carbon dioxide on binderless pellets of Y-type zeolites.
PMID:日期:2025-01-31The adsorption kinetics of carbon dioxide (CO) in three cationic forms of binderless pellets of Y-types zeolites (H-Y, Na-Y, and TMA exchanged Na-Y) are studied using the zero-length column (ZLC) technique. The measurements were carried out at [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] using different flowrates and an initial CO partial pressure of [Formula: see text]- conditions representative of post-combustion CO capture applications. The mass transport within the adsorbent pellets was described using a 1-D Fickian diffusion model accounting for intra- and inter-crystalline mass transport. For the latter, the parallel pore model formulation was used to explicitly account for the adsorbent's macropore size distribution in estimating the volume-averaged diffusivity of the gas. Experiments carried out using different carrier gases, namely helium and nitrogen, were used (i) to determine that these systems are macropore diffusion limited and (ii) to simplify the parameter estimation to a single parameter - the macropore tortuosity. The latter ([Formula: see text]) was in good agreement with independent measurements using MIP ([Formula: see text]). The associated diffusion coefficient, [Formula: see text], was found to vary due to differences in the materials' macropore size distributions and overall porosity. Upon combining the parallel pore model formulation with the temperature dependencies for the pore diffusivities derived from molecular theories of gases, we predict [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] depending on the macropore size distribution. Notably, for the range of temperature tested in this study, [Formula: see text] varies approximately linearly with temperature ([Formula: see text])- in contrast to the commonly reported correlation of [Formula: see text], which may be more appropriate for systems where molecular diffusion dominates and Knudsen diffusion is negligible. The binderless pellets of Y-type zeolites studied exhibit generally higher values for the effective macropore diffusivity of CO compared to previously reported results on commercial FAU zeolites. 4. Impact of heteroatom addition into mesoporous silica for water adsorption in the low partial pressure range.
PMID:日期:2021-08-17Mesoporous silicas are known to be high-performing water adsorbents in high humidity levels due to their large pore volumes. However, for low humidity conditions, these materials typically present a less expressive performance, which is a drawback for many applications. In the present report, mesoporous silica SBA-15 was functionalized with Al, Ti, Zr and Li in order to improve their performance in this condition. The influence of functionalization in porosity, morphology and acidic sites was investigated. Samples with an increased number of acidic sites and with higher microporosity when compared to pure silica were produced. This was responsible for their enhanced performance for water adsorption in low moisture conditions. Sample functionalized with zirconium in SBA-15 synthesis improved the water adsorption capacity of pure silica by three times, reaching up to 127 g kg at a relative pressure of 0.2 and 570 g kg close to saturation pressure. This sample was found to be a promising material to be applied in processes which require high adsorption capacities in both low and high water partial pressure ranges. Moreover, the understanding of the mechanisms behind the heteroatom functionalization can be applied to any silica material in order to enhance its attractiveness towards any polar molecule. 5. Experimental design of a "Snap-on" and standalone single-bed oxygen concentrator for medical applications.
5. 用于医疗应用的“卡扣式”独立单床氧气浓缩器的实验设计PMID:日期:2021-02-13A novel single-bed, "Snap-on" and standalone, medical oxygen concentrator design based on a rapid pressure swing adsorption process was investigated for continuous oxygen supply. The Snap-on concentrator design is easy to hook up to an existing compressed air source, and the unit can then be readily used to produce oxygen for medical applications. It is easily transportable and compared to a traditional oxygen concentrator with its dedicated compressor, the Snap-on concentrator is particularly relevant for the oxygen therapy needs of a larger number of patients in situations such as COVID-19. A commercially available LiLSX zeolite was used for the separation of oxygen from compressed ambient air. The experiments were performed at different feed air pressures using a constant supply of house air in the lab. Further, the device performance was also analyzed using a standalone medium size air compressor. The minimum bed size factor obtained with compressed house air was 100 lb/tons per day contained (TPDc) O at a cycle time of 7 s, whereas the minimum bed size factor obtained with a medium size air compressor weighing about 12 lbs was 210 lb/TPD O at a cycle time of 14.5 s under the same feed pressures of 3.1 bar at an oxygen product purity of 90%. The product oxygen flow rate was nearly double for the same amount of adsorbent when using house air for the Snap-on design. The primary reason for this significantly higher oxygen production was the substantially higher and stable air throughput capacity of a typical house air compressor that enabled rapid cycling of the process at near-constant feed pressure compared to a medium size compressor used in a medical oxygen concentrator. The oxygen recovery was approximately 34% for both cases. Thus, the Snap-on oxygen concentrator was found to be easier to build and it delivered more oxygen for medical use compared to standalone units in locations where a constant supply of compressed feed air is available. This is typically the case in facilities such as hospitals, military medical camps and cruise ships. Further, the Snap-on design offers other benefits such as ease of transportation, higher reliability and lower weight.

6. Uncertainty analysis of adsorption measurements using commercial gravimetric sorption analyzers with simultaneous density measurement based on a magnetic-suspension balance.
PMID:日期:2020-04-27A commercial gravimetric sorption analyzer, which is based on a magnetic-suspension balance, was significantly improved to reduce the uncertainty in adsorption measurements. In a previous paper, we investigated the force-transmission error (FTE) of the instrument's magnetic-suspension coupling, and we analysed the uncertainty of the density measurement. In the present paper, equations for the determination of the adsorption on porous and quasi non-porous materials are provided, where the FTE is taken into account, and a detailed uncertainty analysis is presented. The uncertainty analysis was applied to both the improved measurement system and a typical commercial gravimetric sorption analyzer. Adsorption test measurements were conducted with carbon dioxide along the = 283 K isotherm at pressures up to the dew-point pressure using both a porous material (zeolite 13X) and a quasi non-porous material (solid metallic sinkers). The major uncertainty contributions for adsorption on the porous material were the mass and volume of the adsorbent sample and the assumption of the density of the adsorbed fluid; for the quasi non-porous material, the main contributions were the weighing values of the balance, the density of the investigated fluid in the gas phase, and the volume of the non-porous material. The influence of the FTE on the adsorption on the porous material was approximately 0.002 mmol·g, which was negligibly small; but the influence of the FTE was significant in the case of the quasi non-porous material, i.e., approximately 0.7 mmol·m or about 22% of the adsorption capacity with the highest adsorption observed in this work (near the dew-point pressure). This indicates that the influence of the FTE increases significantly with decreasing adsorption capacity of the adsorbent sample.

7. Improved adsorption reactions, kinetics and stability for model and therapeutic proteins immobilised on affinity resins.
PMID:日期:2019-05-16Protein adsorption on solid state media is important for the industrial affinity chromatography of biotherapeutics and for preparing materials for self-interaction chromatography where fundamental protein solution thermodynamic properties are measured. The adsorption of three model proteins (lysozyme, catalase and BSA) and two antibodies (a monoclonal and a polyclonal antibody) have been investigated on commercial affinity chromatography media with different surface functionalities (Formyl, Tresyl and Amino). Both the extent of protein immobilised (mg protein/ml media) and the reaction kinetics are reported for a range of reaction conditions, including pH, differing buffers as well as the presence of secondary reactants (glutaraldehyde, sodium cyanoborohydride, EDC and NHS). Compared to the reaction conditions recommended by manufacturers as well as those reported in previous published work, significant increases in the extent of protein immobilisation and reaction kinetics are reported here. The addition of glutaraldehyde or sodium cyanoborohydride was found to be especially effective even when not directly needed for the adsorption to happen. For mAb and pIgG, immobilisation levels of 50 and 31 mg of protein/ml of resin respectively were achieved, which are 100% or more than previously reported. Enhanced levels were achieved for lysozyme of 120 mg/ml with very rapid reaction kinetics (< 1 h) with sodium cyanoborohydride. It can be concluded that specific chromatography resins with Tresyl activated support offered enhanced levels of protein immobilisation due to their ability to react to form amine or thio-ether linkages with proteins. Additionally, glutaraldehyde can result in higher immobilisation levels whilst it can also accelerate immobilisation reaction kinetics.

8. {"_":"A reference high-pressure CO adsorption isotherm for ammonium ZSM-5 zeolite: results of an interlaboratory study.","sub":["2"]}
PMID:日期:2018-07-26This paper reports the results of an international interlaboratory study led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on the measurement of high-pressure surface excess carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms on NIST Reference Material RM 8852 (ammonium ZSM-5 zeolite), at 293.15 K (20 °C) from 1 kPa up to 4.5 MPa. Eleven laboratories participated in this exercise and, for the first time, high-pressure adsorption reference data are reported using a reference material. An empirical reference equation [ -surface excess uptake (mmol/g), -equilibrium pressure (MPa), = -6.22, = 1.97, = 4.73, and = 3.87] along with the 95% uncertainty interval ( = 0.075 mmol/g) were determined for the reference isotherm using a Bayesian, Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Together, this zeolitic reference material and the associated adsorption data provide a means for laboratories to test and validate high-pressure adsorption equipment and measurements. Recommendations are provided for measuring reliable high-pressure adsorption isotherms using this material, including activation procedures, data processing methods to determine surface excess uptake, and the appropriate equation of state to be used.

9. Relationship between Pore-size Distribution and Flexibility of Adsorbent Materials: Statistical Mechanics and Future Material Characterization Techniques.
PMID:日期:2017-03-30Measurement of the pore-size distribution (PSD) via gas adsorption and the so-called "kernel method" is a widely used characterization technique for rigid adsorbents. Yet, standard techniques and analytical equipment are not appropriate to characterize the emerging class of flexible adsorbents that deform in response to the stress imparted by an adsorbate gas, as the PSD is a characteristic of the material that varies with the gas pressure and any other external stresses. Here, we derive the PSD for a flexible adsorbent using statistical mechanics in the osmotic ensemble to draw analogy to the kernel method for rigid materials. The resultant PSD is a function of the ensemble constraints including all imposed stresses and, most importantly, the deformation free energy of the adsorbent material. Consequently, a pressure-dependent PSD is a descriptor of the deformation characteristics of an adsorbent and may be the basis of future material characterization techniques. We discuss how, given a technique for resolving pressure-dependent PSDs, the present statistical mechanical theory could enable a new generation of analytical tools that measure and characterize certain intrinsic material properties of flexible adsorbents via otherwise simple adsorption experiments.

10. Net, excess and absolute adsorption in mixed gas adsorption.
PMID:日期:2017-02-24The formulation of a thermodynamic framework for mixtures based on absolute, excess or net adsorption is discussed and the qualitative dependence with pressure and fugacity is used to highlight a practical issue that arises when extending the formulations to mixtures and to the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST). Two important conclusions are derived: the correct fundamental thermodynamic variable is the absolute adsorbed amount; there is only one possible definition of the ideal adsorbed solution and whichever starting point is used the same final IAST equations are obtained, contrary to what has been reported in the literature.
