2. Therapeutic Impact of Snoezelen Environments on Emotional Outcomes and Pain in Long-Term Care Residents with and Without Dementia.
PMID:日期:2026-10-04Older adults living in long-term care facilities are at increased risk of reduced psychoemotional well-being. Snoezelen multisensory environments have been proposed as person-centered interventions, although evidence remains inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Snoezelen environments on biopsychosocial outcomes in older adults living in long-term care facilities with and without dementia. A mixed-methods, quasi-experimental repeated-measures design was applied. Participants completed eight sessions over four weeks with a self-controlled comparison phase. Quantitative analyses examined pre-post intervention and pre-post session effects in physiological measures, pain perception, psychoemotional domains, functional status and quality-of-life outcomes. Data from focus groups with participants and professionals were analyzed thematically. Session-level analyses revealed improvements in emotional expression, psychoemotional outcomes, and pain perception following sessions. Qualitative findings supported these results. No pre-post intervention effects were observed. Snoezelen multisensory environments provide immediate psychoemotional benefits and pain reduction in older adults living in long-term care facilities with and without dementia. When implemented on demand or preventively, Snoezelen multisensory environments may serve as complementary, person-centered interventions in long-term care settings.

3. Mental Health and Cognitive Predictors of Functional Decline in Nursing Home Residents with Type 2 Diabetes.
PMID:日期:2026-10-01To identify multidomain predictors of functional decline among nursing home residents with type 2 diabetes (T2D). A secondary analysis of longitudinal Minimum Data Set 3.0 data from Iowa nursing home residents with T2D was conducted. Three machine learning models were developed to predict functional decline, defined as worsening Activities of Daily Living Long-Form scores between first and last assessments. Predictor variables were guided by the Functional Consequences Theory and represented biological, psychological, and environmental factors. The sample included 5,440 residents with T2D from 430 nursing homes (mean age 81; 63% female). The multi-class classification model demonstrated the best fit to predict functional decline (AUC = .93). Lower baseline function, poorer cognition, higher depressive symptoms, older age, and a greater number of assessments were the most influential predictors. Residents' belief in improving function, coexisting chronic diseases, and rurality were prominent predictors. Functional decline in residents with T2D reflects interrelated biological, psychological, and environmental vulnerabilities, several of which are modifiable. Routine assessment of baseline function, cognition, and depressive symptoms may support early risk identification. Interdisciplinary interventions supporting mental health and residents' confidence in functional improvement may improve outcomes, particularly in rural and medically complex populations.

5. Assessing Resilience in the 45 and Up Study: Validation of the Prospective Resilience Scale (PRS).
PMID:日期:2026-09-20This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Prospective Resilience Scale (PRS). Participants ( = 24,706), aged 56-100+ years, (mean age 69.8 ± 7.0) from the 45 and Up Study completed the PRS. The dataset was randomly split into an exploration sample ( = 12,303) for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a validation sample ( = 12,403) for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), reliability, and construct validity testing. EFA supported a single-factor framework retaining 9 of 10 items (32.09% variance explained). CFA for the 9-item validation sample (mean PRS = 29.2, SD = 5.1, range = 9-45), demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (Validation Sample: Cronbach's α = .75, McDonald's ω = .74) and construct validity. The model showed partial fit (SRMR = .044, RMSEA = .075, CFI = .894, TLI = .859). Correlations with health indicators ranged from small (chronic illness, disability; = -.14) to very large (quality of life, = .47; psychological distress, = -.42). This novel PRS had acceptable psychometric properties utilizing standardized prospective scenarios to minimize measurement variability from different recent events. The PRS has potential for population health monitoring to track resilience at scale and inform policies and programs to promote healthy aging.

6. Worried but Not Intending: When Expressive Suppression Dampens the Motivational Role of Health Worry in Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Older Adults.
PMID:日期:2026-09-18Health worry may promote engagement in preventive behaviors, but when poorly regulated it can also foster avoidance. This study examined the relationship between health worry and intention to participate in colorectal cancer screening, investigating the moderating role of emotion regulation strategies and age-related differences. Within the MIRIADE project, a cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,451 adults aged 50-74 years, divided into middle-aged (50-60 years) and older adult (61-74 years) groups. Participants completed measures of health worry, cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, and screening intention. Moderation analyses were performed separately by age group using PROCESS. Health worry was positively associated with screening intention in both age groups. Cognitive reappraisal predicted higher intention but did not moderate this relationship. Expressive suppression significantly moderated this association only among older adults: health worry predicted higher screening intention at low and moderate levels of suppression, whereas this effect disappeared at high levels of suppression. Emotion regulation strategies, particularly expressive suppression, influence how health worry translates into screening intentions in later adulthood. Interventions aimed at increasing cancer screening behaviors in older adults should consider not only health worry, but also the ways individuals regulate emotional experiences associated with health threats.

7. Adverse Childhood Experiences and Cognitive-Functional Aging Trajectories: A Nationally Representative Study in China.
PMID:日期:2026-09-16Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with long-term health risks, yet how childhood adversity shapes joint trajectories of cognitive and functional aging remains unclear. This study examined associations between ACEs and joint cognitive-functional trajectories and tested whether social participation moderates these relationships. Data were drawn from 8,590 adults aged 45+ across five waves (2011-2020) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Group-based trajectory modeling identified joint cognitive-functional patterns. Multinomial logistic regression assessed associations between ACEs and trajectory membership, with social participation moderation tested. Five distinct trajectories emerged. Each additional ACE was associated with 24% higher risk of the most disadvantaged trajectory. Both threat- and deprivation-related ACEs predicted adverse trajectories, with bullying and household mental illness showing strongest associations. Social participation was independently associated with more favorable trajectories, but did not significantly moderate the association between ACEs (cumulative, threat-related, or deprivation-related) and trajectory membership. ACEs were associated with heterogeneous cognitive-functional aging pathways in a dose-response manner. While social participation was independently linked to more favorable trajectories, it did not buffer the adverse associations between ACEs and trajectory membership.

8. What Factors Are Associated with Health Literacy Among Family Caregivers of Older Adults?
PMID:日期:2026-09-16To identify factors associated with different levels of health literacy among family caregivers of older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 family caregivers recruited while care recipients attended appointments at a tertiary hospital in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Caregivers were classified into three groups (i.e. inadequate, marginal, and adequate health literacy) according to the total score on a health literacy measure. In addition to health literacy, caregivers were assessed for burnout, depressive symptoms, social support, and satisfaction with caregiving and completed a questionnaire assessing sociodemographic and caregiving characteristics. In the ordinal logistic regression analysis, higher educational attainment, a greater number of days per week devoted to caregiving, lower levels of burnout, and the absence of depressive symptoms were associated with increased odds of having higher levels of health literacy. Sociodemographic, caregiving-related, and psychological factors were associated with health literacy among family caregivers of older adults. Although nearly half of the caregivers were classified as having adequate health literacy, interventions aimed at promoting health literacy while also reducing psychological distress, particularly burnout symptoms and depressive symptoms, are warranted for family caregivers recruited from tertiary hospital settings.

9. Culturally Familiar Nostalgic Virtual Reality Cognitive Training for Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Day-Care Centers.
PMID:日期:2026-09-06This study examined the effectiveness of a virtual reality based nostalgic cognitive training program for older adults attending day-care centers. In this two-arm randomized controlled trial ( = 55; mean age = 81.24 years), participants received 12 sessions of VR-based nostalgic cognitive training integrating culturally familiar Taiwanese life scenes (1960s-1990s) with structured multidomain cognitive tasks, or routine activities. The prespecified primary outcome was global cognitive function (MoCA-T). Prespecified secondary outcomes were nostalgia propensity (SNS), depressive symptoms (GDS-15), psychological well-being (PWB-18) and life satisfaction (LSI-SF). Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to examine intervention effects. This trial was retrospectively registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT06973551). Significant group × time interactions for MoCA-T, SNS, and GDS-15 favored the experimental group. No significant group × time interaction was found for PWB-18 or LSI-SF, although PWB-18 showed within-group improvement in the experimental group. VR-based nostalgic cognitive training may provide short-term benefits for global cognitive function, nostalgia propensity, and depressive symptoms among older adults in day-care settings.

10. Alexithymia Profiles and Associated Factors Among Older Stroke Patients in China: A Latent Profile Analysis.
PMID:日期:2026-08-28This study aimed to identify latent profiles of alexithymia among older stroke patients and examine factors associated with profile membership. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 286 older stroke patients in a tertiary hospital in Jilin Province, China. Alexithymia was assessed using the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Latent profile analysis was performed to identify alexithymia profiles, and multinomial logistic regression was used to examine associated factors. Three profiles were identified based on difficulty identifying feelings (DIF): low DIF ( = 51, 17.8%), moderate DIF ( = 142, 49.7%), and high DIF ( = 93, 32.5%). TAS-20 scores increased across profiles, with the greatest differences observed in DIF. DDF scores were relatively similar across profiles, while EOT did not show a progressive increase. Older age, lower educational attainment, greater chronic disease burden, poorer activities of daily living, and higher anxiety symptoms were associated with the high DIF profile. Older stroke patients showed heterogeneous alexithymia profiles mainly characterized by increasing DIF. Profile-based assessment may provide clinically useful information beyond total alexithymia scores. Early identification of alexithymia profiles may support targeted psychological assessment, rehabilitation planning, and caregiver support.
