This study examined the association between avoidance coping and prenatal cannabis use among Black pregnant women and explored whether perceived stress mediated this relationship. Data were drawn from the Biosocial Impact on Black Births (BIBB) study, a prospective cohort that enrolled Black pregnant women (18-45 years) with singleton pregnancies from prenatal clinics in Detroit (MI), Columbus (OH), and Orlando (FL) between 2017-2022. Participants completed a validated measure of the Revised Prenatal Coping Inventory for avoidance coping and self-reported ever use of cannabis during pregnancy. Logistic regression was used to adjust for maternal age, household income, education level, marital status, social support, gestational age at enrollment, and state of residence. Mediation analysis assessed perceived stress as a potential mediator using regression-based path models and the Sobel test. Among 1,066 participants with cannabis use data, 21.3 % reported using cannabis during pregnancy. After adjustment, avoidance coping strategy was significantly associated with prenatal cannabis use, suggesting that individuals who rely more on avoidance coping are more likely to use cannabis during pregnancy. Compared to the lowest tertile, the odds of prenatal cannabis use were 1.80 (95 % CI: 1.19-2.76) in the second tertile and 2.45 (95 % CI: 1.61-3.76) in the third tertile of avoidance coping. Mediation analysis showed that perceived stress mediated this relationship (p < 0.05), accounting for 36.4 % of the total effect. Findings underscore the importance of promoting adaptive coping strategies and addressing psychological stress in culturally responsive health interventions to reduce reliance on prenatal cannabis use.

Non-alcoholic beer may help adults reduce alcohol intake, but it could also undermine alcohol reduction efforts. Few studies have investigated how and why adults consume non-alcoholic beer. We aimed to establish nationally representative estimates of the prevalence, patterns, motivations, and correlates of non-alcoholic beer consumption among US regular alcohol consumers. In October 2024, we conducted a cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of US adults ages 21 + years who drank alcohol at least once a week in the past four weeks. We assessed past-year non-alcoholic beer consumption prevalence, patterns, and motivations. We also examined correlates of consumption using logistic regression. Analyses weighted observations such that the sample was representative of US alcohol consumers ages 21+. Among 1,031 respondents, 25% reported consuming non-alcoholic beer in the past year, and 37% expressed interest in drinking non-alcoholic beer in the next year. Among non-alcoholic beer consumers, 59% reported perceiving that they drank less alcohol when drinking non-alcoholic beer, whereas 13% reported perceiving that they drank more alcohol. Motivations for consuming non-alcoholic beer included that it helps reduce alcohol intake (46%), is better for health (39%), and is something new (37%). People who reported drinking alcohol 3 + days/week were more likely to have consumed non-alcoholic beer than those who drink alcohol less frequently (p = 0.008), as were those identifying as Asian compared to White (p < 0.001). Many regular alcohol consumers have consumed or are interested in consuming non-alcoholic beer. People may consume non-alcoholic beer to reduce their alcohol intake, which could potentially benefit public health.

Cannabis use is common among people who use tobacco, however, few studies have examined route-specific cannabis use in the context of tobacco. This study provides nationally representative 2024 prevalence estimates for overall and route-specific cannabis use by tobacco use status. Data were from the nationally representative 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey (N = 6328). Measures included past 12-month cannabis use and route of administration (smoking; vaping; dabbing; eating/drinking (consumed); applying a lotion; 2+ routes) and current any tobacco use. Multivariable logistic regression models examined the association between current tobacco use and past 12-month route-specific cannabis use, adjusting for state-level cannabis legality, reasons for use, and sociodemographic characteristics. An estimated 23.1% of US adults reported past 12-month cannabis use: 62.6% smoked, 57.6% consumed, 40.1% vaped, 15.2% applied lotion, and 12.4% dabbed, with over half (52.7%) endorsing >1 route of administration. Cannabis use was higher among adults who currently used tobacco products (46.0%) compared to those who did not (17.4%) (p < 0.001). Among those reporting past 12-month cannabis use, those who currently used tobacco (vs. did not) were more likely to smoke cannabis (73.4% vs. 55.6%, p = 0.001), vape cannabis (52.4% vs. 32.1%, p < 0.001), or use 2+ routes (60% vs 47.9%, p = 0.02). In 2024, nearly 1 in 2 adults who currently used tobacco reported using cannabis. Current tobacco use was significantly associated with increased likelihood of past 12-month cannabis use. Continued surveillance and research on the interplay of cannabis and tobacco use is needed to understand co-use health effects.

Problematic video gaming is a growing concern among emerging adults. While perceived social norms are well-established predictors of substance use, their role in problematic gaming remains understudied. This study examined whether descriptive norms (estimates of others' gaming frequency) and injunctive norms (estimates of others' approval of gaming) were associated with gaming frequency, duration, and problem gaming severity across three reference groups: typical students, same-gendered students, and close friends. Participants were 1,295 Canadian undergraduates recruited from five universities who reported past-12-month video gaming. Participants completed self-report surveys of normative gaming perceptions, personal gaming behaviours, and gaming-related problems. Path models tested whether perceived norms were associated with problem gaming severity via personal past-30-day gaming frequency and average daily duration. As hypothesized, participants estimated that peers gamed more often than themselves, with the largest estimations for more distal groups. Descriptive norms were positively associated with personal gaming frequency across all three groups, and with duration for the same-gender and close-friend groups; both were associated with greater problem gaming severity. Injunctive norms were associated with personal gaming frequency, duration, and problem gaming severity only for the close-friend group. Effect sizes were strongest for close friends, then same-gendered peers, then typical students. Findings extend the social norms literature to problematic gaming and identify perceived norms as a correlate of problem gaming in emerging adults. Longitudinal/intervention research is needed to clarify the direction of these associations and evaluate whether personalized normative feedback may help reduce problem gaming.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fifth Edition (DSM-5) introduced cannabis use disorder (CUD) severity indicators along a unidimensional spectrum. Limited research has explored how individuals compare in severity and risk for related problems (e.g., psychiatric symptoms) across CUD severity groupings. Participants were adults with chronic cannabis use (N = 599, 57.6 % female) drawn from several studies conducted at large southeastern universities. Confirmatory factor and item response theory analyses were conducted on interviewer-assessed CUD symptoms to evaluate latent CUD construct and severity indicator validity. Multinomial regressions were used to compare severity groups on cannabis use behaviors (e.g., Marijuana Problems Scale [MPS], Marijuana Motives Measure [MMM]), psychiatric symptoms (e.g., Distress Intolerance Index [DII], Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire [MASQ]), and other substance use (e.g., Timeline Followback [TLFB]). DSM-5 CUD criteria demonstrated good discrimination/difficulty (>1.00) and reflected a unidimensional latent CUD construct (factor loadings = 0.439-0.779). Latent severity scores showed some overlap between individuals with adjacent severity indicators (1.34 - 31.78 % overlap). Moderate/severe CUD differed from mild/no CUD across multiple cannabis use indices, with greater comorbid problems (general distress, daily nicotine use) in severe CUD specifically. Clinically relevant differences between mild vs. no CUD were more limited. Findings provide support for the validity of the DSM-5 severity indicators of CUD. Results further suggest that moderate and severe CUD appear to be a better reflection of the theory-based conception of the disorder than mild CUD within adults with chronic cannabis use.

Despite rising rates of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) among females, research on female-specific implicated factors remains limited. Emerging evidence suggests that substance use behavior may fluctuate across the menstrual cycle, particularly among individuals with premenstrual disorders (PMDs). However, findings for cannabis use are limited and inconsistent. The present study aimed to investigate menstrual cyclicity of cannabis use likelihood and quantity, and potential implicated factors. Naturally cycling individuals with diagnosed or suspected PMDs were followed prospectively for 2-3 menstrual cycles. Participants completed daily rating of cannabis use and premenstrual symptom severity using the Daily Record of Severity of Problems (DRSP). The novel phase-aligned cycle time scaling (PACTS) method was used to generate a continuous, phase-aligned cycle-time variable anchored to both menses onset and ovulation, and associations were modeled using generalized additive mixed models. Daily quantity of dried cannabis flower used showed menstrual cyclicity (p = 0.030), peaking before menses onset and around ovulation. Daily core affective symptoms of PMDs (p = 0.004), particularly emotional/rejection sensitivity (p = 0.004) and interpersonal conflicts/problems (p = 0.010), also moderated this cyclicity. Specifically, higher-than-usual daily symptom levels were associated with increased cannabis flower quantity used premenstrually, whereas lower-than-usual symptom levels were associated with decreased premenstrual cannabis use quantity. The findings suggest that the quantity of dried cannabis flower used fluctuates meaningfully across the menstrual cycle and is shaped by daily affective symptoms of PMDs. If replicated, these findings highlight the importance of incorporating menstrual cycle timing and PMD symptoms into prevention and treatment strategies for cannabis use.

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) involves addiction-like impaired control and functional interference, but its longitudinal association with depressive symptoms may reflect stable between-person co-occurrence or dynamic within-person coupling. Guided by I-PACE, we tested whether PSU and depressive symptoms were linked through stable individual differences, prospective within-person deviations, or both. Chinese college students were surveyed in September and December 2025 and March and June 2026. Analyses retained 851 participants with at least two observed waves; 189 eligible students were first observed at T2. RI-CLPM, LCM-SR, missingness, and closed-cohort sensitivity analyses were conducted. The RI-CLPM attributed approximately 49 %-53 % of PSU variance and 57 %-61 % of depressive-symptom variance to stable between-person differences. The random intercepts were strongly correlated (r = 0.693, 95 % CI [.619, 0.767], p < 0.001). Stationarity constraints were not rejected, robust Δχ(8) = 7.92, p = 0.441. The stationary PSU-to-depressive-symptom path was B = 0.045, SE = 0.018, p = 0.010; the mean standardized effect was β = 0.126, SE = 0.051, 95 % CI [.027, 0.225], p = 0.013. The reverse mean effect was β = 0.038, p = 0.457, and the standardized directional contrast was nonsignificant, Δβ = 0.088, 95 % CI [-0.024, 0.201], p = 0.125. The LCM-SR cross-lag was nonsignificant (B = 0.036, SE = 0.039, 95 % CI [-0.039, 0.112], p = 0.344). PSU and depressive symptoms showed strong stable co-occurrence. The modest forward association was model-dependent and did not establish a mechanism, causal effect, or statistically reliable directional difference.

Binge drinking among U.S. adolescents varies by developmental stage, race/ethnicity, sex, and sexual identity. However, few studies have examined how these positions/identities intersect to shape drinking patterns. This study examined inequities in binge drinking among U.S. high school students using an intersectional multilevel analysis of individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy. We used data from 88,291 students who participated in the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. Multilevel logistic regression models were fitted with students nested within 224 intersectional strata defined by grade, race/ethnicity, sex, and sexual identity. We calculated the variance partition coefficient (VPC), proportional change in variance, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Approximately 10.4% of students reported binge drinking. The null model VPC was 10.7%, with grade, race/ethnicity, sex/gender, and sexual identity explaining 79.6% of the between-stratum variance in binge drinking. Higher grades (12th: odds ratio [OR]: 3.18, 11th: OR: 2.20, and 10th: OR: 1.44 vs. 9th), girls (OR: 1.15 vs. boys), and gay/lesbian (OR: 1.77) and bisexual identities (OR: 1.34 vs. heterosexual/straight) were associated with greater odds of binge drinking. Asian (OR: 0.52) and Black (OR: 0.63) students had lower odds, whereas Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students had higher odds (OR: 1.41) than white students.Predicted probabilities of binge drinking ranged from 1.96% to 30.49% across strata, with 12th-grade, white, heterosexual girls and boys exhibiting the highest positive departures from the predicted probabilities. Binge drinking inequities were largely explained by grade, race/ethnicity, sex, and sexual identity, although intersectional interaction effects remained. Findings call for proportionate universal public health interventions with a focus on high-risk groups.

Health warning labels (HWLs) on cigarette packs influence risk perceptions and cessation behaviors, but their effects diminish over time. Time-varying mediation modeling can uncover when and how HWLs affect cessation-related cognitions and behaviors. As part of a two-week randomized trial, US adult daily smokers (N = 179) received cigarette packs with either control HWLs or HWLs plus inserts containing rotating efficacy messages about quitting benefits and cessation tips. Using time-varying mediation models with ecological momentary assessment data, we examined how inserts (vs control) influenced daily cognitive elaboration of cessation benefits and subsequent forgoing of cigarettes (i.e., next day) and whether those effects changed over time. Over two weeks, inserts progressively increased cognitive elaboration, reaching statistical significance around day 6. The association between cognitive elaboration and forgoing a cigarette the next day was significant across the study period, peaking mid-study. Direct effects of inserts on forgoing behavior emerged in the first week and stabilized after day 7. The indirect (mediated) effect of inserts on forgoing via cognitive elaboration increased during the first week and declined slightly in the second week. Inserts gradually increased both cognitive elaboration of quitting benefits and forgoing cigarettes, with mediation of insert effects by cognitive elaboration peaking after one week, then declining. These findings suggest that additional communication strategies, perhaps using different channels, may be necessary to boost HWL effects on cessation-related behaviors that are mediated through the pathway of cognitive elaboration of cessation benefits.

Stress is a key mechanism underlying cigarette smoking, yet little is known about how childhood maltreatment (CM) shapes stress-related responses across core addiction domains. Guided by the Addiction Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA) framework, this study examined whether CM exposure moderated within-person changes in negative affect, urge to smoke, and working memory during an acute laboratory stress task in daily smokers (N = 56). Generalized estimating equation results indicated significant main effects of time (β = 0.063, 95 % CI [0.003, 0.123], p = 0.038) and CM exposure (β = 0.217, 95 % CI [0.011, 0.423], p = 0.039) on negative affect, such that higher CM predicted sustained elevations in negative affect across the session. The CM × Time interaction was non-significant. A significant main effect of time on urge to smoke was observed (β = 0.246, 95 % CI [0.168, 0.325], p < 0.001). The main effect of CM on urge to smoke was just above the traditional threshold of significance (β = -0.282, 95 % CI [-0.581, 0.017], p = 0.064) and the primary CM × Time interaction was not significant. However, supplementary analyses treating time categorically indicated a significant CM × Time interaction (p = 0.040), suggesting that the association between CM and urge to smoke differed across phases of the stress protocol. No association was observed between CM exposure and working memory. These findings suggest that CM may be particularly relevant to negative emotionality among cigarette users, while its associations with stress-related changes across other ANA domains warrant further investigation.
