1. Strengthening the Socio-cultural Dimension of Food in the Mexican Healthy and Sustainable Dietary Guidelines.
1. 加强墨西哥健康与可持续膳食指南中食物的社会文化维度PMID:日期:2026-09-29Dietary guidelines should incorporate not only advances in nutritional science but also the sociocultural factors that shape food practices. This study describes how the sociocultural dimension was integrated into the 2023 Mexican Healthy and Sustainable Dietary Guidelines (HSDGs). It presents key formative research findings on food practices, perceptions, and the sociocultural and environmental factors influencing adherence to selected dietary recommendations, which informed the contextualization, formulation, and communication of the Guidelines. We conducted 84 semi-structured interviews with mothers and fathers of children and adolescents from low socioeconomic households across Mexico. Interviews explored food practices, the sociocultural food space, the feasibility of adopting selected dietary recommendations, and environmental practices related to food consumption. Social norms, symbolic meanings, gendered food responsibilities, and food environment factors strongly influenced dietary practices. Prevailing norms encouraged the consumption of red meat and ultra-processed products while discouraging vegetables and legumes, creating barriers to healthier and more sustainable diets. These findings informed recommendations to reshape food-related social norms by promoting vegetables and legumes as everyday foods, challenging the normalization of frequent red meat and ultra-processed product consumption, encouraging shared household food responsibilities, and addressing structural barriers such as the seasonal affordability of fruits and vegetables.

2. Developmental Origins of Health and Disease: The role of Clostridioides difficile Colonization of Gut Microbiota During Infancy.
2. 健康与疾病的发育起源:婴儿期肠道微生物群中艰难梭菌定植的作用PMID:日期:2026-09-26The DOHaD theory was originally proposed to explain the link between fetal development and risk for non-communicable disease - NCD. With advancements in human microbiome research, this theory has been extended to consider postnatal development of the infant gut microbiome and how this contributes to NCD trajectories. C. difficile transiently colonizes the gut microbiota of up to 50% of infants without causing symptoms, but has been associated with disease in the longterm. We reviewed and summarized the current literature to identify prenatal, birth and postnatal factors contributing to C. difficile colonization, and subsequent changes in host biology and NCD outcomes. Many early-life factors promote C. difficile colonization, including prenatal overweight, cesarean birth, hospitalization, antibiotic exposure, formula feeding, histamine-2 receptor antagonist treatment, household pets and smoking, and daycare attendance. Whereas, prenatal milk consumption and having siblings seem to protect against colonization. When C. difficile is present in the gut, associated changes to gut microbiota and metabolites are reported in observational studies. Clinical trial evidence suggests that preceding changes like a reduction in Bifidobacterium species, could promote C. difficile colonization. C. difficile colonization during infancy increases the risk for NCD, including obesity and many atopic diseases (asthma, eczema, food and peanut sensitization). Furthermore, its colonization and abundance was found to be a statistical mediator of these health outcomes, pointing to a potential mediating role for C. difficile in NCD onset. Evidence from the current literature supports the inclusion of C. difficile colonization during infancy as an important biomarker in the developmental origins of disease.

3. A Deep Learning-Powered Framework for the Early Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease through Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Analysis.
3. 一种基于深度学习的框架,通过先进的磁共振成像与分析实现阿尔茨海默病的早期预测PMID:日期:2026-09-24Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that severely impairs cognitive and memory functions, highlighting the importance of early and accurate diagnoses. Although deep learning (DL)-based automated diagnostic systems have demonstrated promising results, many existing methods remain limited by inadequate feature representation, feature redundancy, and insufficient modeling of local and global brain patterns in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. This study proposes an advanced DL-powered framework for the early prediction of AD using MRI data, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy and interpretability. MRI images from the Augmented Alzheimer MRI Dataset, comprising non-demented, very mild demented, mild demented, and moderate demented classes, were used. Data pre-processing included resizing, normalization, noise reduction, and data augmentation to enhance image quality. High-level features are extracted using a pre-trained ResNet-50 network. Optimal feature selection is achieved using the Levy-Echo Search Optimizer (LESO), a hybrid of Cuckoo Search and Bat Algorithm. Classification was performed using the novel hybrid architecture DenEffNet, which integrates DenseNet-121 and EfficientNet-B3 to capture complementary local and multi-scale features. The eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques, including Grad-CAM, LIME, and SHAP, were incorporated to enhance model transparency. The proposed framework achieved an accuracy of 97.8%, a precision of 98.0%, a recall of 98.6%, a specificity of 98.5%, an F1 score of 98.3%, and a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.97, outperforming existing methods. The proposed framework demonstrates high accuracy, robustness, and interpretability, supporting its potential for reliable early AD diagnosis in clinical settings.

4. Maternal Obesity Prolongs the Adolescent Growth Spurt in Rat Offspring and Increases Weight Gain in a Sex-Specific Manner.
4. 母体肥胖延长大鼠子代青春期生长突增并以性别特异性方式增加体重增长PMID:日期:2026-08-24Maternal obesity affects offspring (F1) development, particularly postnatal growth trajectory and adult adiposity in a sex-dependent manner. However, there is no generalized model that allows identification of critical points in development. Male and female F1 Wistar rats born to control (C; fed a chow diet) or obese (MO; fed a high-fat diet) mothers were weaned onto a chow diet and weighed weekly from postnatal day (PND) 21-110, to analyze their growth trajectories. F1 body weight (F1 BW) was fitted to a Gompertz function to estimate the growth spurt (GS, period of maximal growth rate) and timing, maximal predicted weight (MPW), peak spurt velocity (PSV), growth acceleration (GA) and growth deceleration (GD) points. F1 MO had lower BW during puberty and adolescence, prolonged GS, and increased MPW compared to C rats. GA was delayed in F1 MO males, but not females. At PND 110, F1 MO exhibited higher adiposity and similar BW compared to C. Adiposity positively correlated with MPW, PSV, and GD in both sexes, suggesting that delayed and extended growth are linked to increased adiposity. The Gompertz model showed that maternal obesity programs GS and MPW in a sex-specific manner. These sex-dependent shifts in growth dynamics were associated with increased adiposity. This approach identifies critical windows shaping developmental growth trajectories and highlights periods of vulnerability. It also provides opportunities to develop sex-specific interventions to prevent long-term metabolic alterations, including increased adiposity and obesity-related metabolic dysfunction, in the offspring of obese mothers.

5. High-polyphenol Pre-Hispanic Diet from Pre-Gestation to Lactation Modulates Maternal Physiology, Milk Composition, and Offspring Outcomes in Wistar Rats.
PMID:日期:2026-08-24Maternal nutrition during pre-gestation, gestation, and lactation plays a central role in early-life programming, according to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) framework. However, evidence regarding bioactive-rich traditional diets under physiological conditions remains limited. To evaluate the effects of a high-polyphenol Pre-Hispanic dietary pattern on maternal metabolism, mammary gland differentiation, milk composition, and offspring nutrient exposure in a non-obesogenic rat model. Sixteen female Wistar rats were randomized to either a control diet (AIN-93G) or a Pre-Hispanic diet containing nixtamalized white maize, black beans, Serrano chili peppers, and red tomatoes. Diets were administered from pre-gestation through lactation. Maternal metabolic markers, mammary gland morphology, milk yield and composition, and offspring milk intake were assessed. Total phenolic content and selected compounds were quantified in the ingredients and diets. Compared with the Control group, the Pre-Hispanic group had lower serum insulin and HOMA-IR levels, indicating improved insulin sensitivity, without affecting body weight or food intake. Mammary gland weight and parenchymal area increased, whereas adipose tissue area decreased, suggesting enhanced structural differentiation. Milk macronutrient composition remained similar between both groups; however, milk from the Pre-Hispanic group showed higher early-lactation polyphenol content, lower arachidonic acid levels, and a reduced AA/DHA+EPA ratio. Offspring milk intake increased during lactation, with a trend toward higher DHA and EPA intake in the Pre-Hispanic group. A high-polyphenol Pre-Hispanic dietary pattern improved maternal metabolic efficiency, promoted mammary gland differentiation, and favorably modified milk bioactive composition under physiological conditions, supporting its potential role in beneficial early-life programming.

6. Mental Health Disorders and Dementia in Ecuadorian Older Adults: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.
PMID:日期:2026-08-22Older adults are vulnerable to mental health disorders, and hospitalization typically indicates severity. This study aimed to identify the most common mental health disorders leading to hospitalization among older adults in Ecuador. The frequency of different types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and other forms of dementia, as well as non-alcohol-induced delirium, was also analyzed. Nine years of nationwide data were examined, including sociodemographic factors, types of disorders, and lengths of hospital stays for each mental health disorder based on ICD-10 criteria. The Ecuadorian National Institute of Statistics and Censuses provided the dataset for analysis based on hospitalization data. A logistic regression model was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aOR). Between 2015 and 2023, Ecuador recorded 10,949 hospitalizations for mental health disorders among the older adult population. The highest hospitalization rates observed were 10.17 per 100,000 inhabitants for mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use, predominantly among males. Depressive disorder rates were 9.35 per 100,000 inhabitants, with higher odds in women (aOR 1.78, 95% CI 1.59-1.99). Adults aged 75-79 and 80+ had higher odds of hospitalization for Alzheimer's disease (aOR 7.64 and 10.81, respectively). Hospitalizations due to mental and behavioral disorders related to psychoactive substance use were typically shorter (less than 2 d), while schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorders were associated with longer stays (more than 11 d). Our findings reveal critical patterns of hospitalizations among older adults due to substance use and depression, providing data for public health policy and future research in similar settings.

7. Maternal Immune Activation and Postnatal Anoxia Impair Olfactory Discrimination and Increase Oxidative Stress in the Olfactory Bulb of Wistar Rats.
PMID:日期:2026-08-18Maternal immune activation (MIA) during pregnancy is associated with the development of neurodevelopmental diseases and psychiatric disorders. Early perinatal inflammation also increases the vulnerability of newborns to subsequent episodes of oxygen restriction. MIA causes alterations in the hippocampus, cerebral cortex, and olfactory bulb (OB). However, the combined effects of MIA and postnatal oxygen restriction on the OB have not been thoroughly explored. To investigate the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced MIA associated with postnatal oxygen restriction on olfactory behavior and markers of oxidative stress, antioxidant enzyme activity, and cytokine expression in the OB of young rats. A total of 20 male Wistar offspring were used. The experimental model combined LPS-induced MIA (E17-E21) with postnatal anoxia in pups (P0, 20 min exposure to 100% nitrogen). Two experimental groups were formed: Control (n = 10) and LPS-A (n = 10). Olfactory behavior (P34), oxidative stress biomarkers, antioxidant enzyme activity, and cytokine expression (PCR) in the OB (P35) were analyzed. Animals in the LPS-A group exhibited preserved gross olfactory detection, yet impaired habituation and discrimination of both non-social and social odors. These behavioral changes were accompanied by elevated oxidative stress markers and reduced antioxidant enzyme activity in the OB, while cytokine expression remained unchanged. These results suggest that the redox balance may be an important mechanism linking MIA and oxygen restriction to olfactory dysfunction. This supports the idea that perinatal stress can lead to deficits later in life, consistent with the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis.

8. Expression of PROS1 in Negative Pressure Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers and its Effect on Angiogenesis.
PMID:日期:2026-08-18This study aimed to investigate the role of protein S (PROS1) in the pro-healing effects of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) on diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). Serum and granulation tissue samples were collected from patients with DFU and non-diabetic skin ulcer control (SUC) subjects. PROS1 expression levels were measured before and after NPWT. For in vitro functional verification, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured under normal or high-glucose (HG) conditions. Experiments were performed to explore the regulatory role of PROS1 in endothelial proliferation, tube formation, and apoptosis in both PROS1 knockdown and overexpression in HG-cultured HUVECs. Baseline tissue PROS1 expression was lower in the DFU group compared to the SUC group. PROS1 mRNA and protein levels were significantly upregulated in the granulation tissue of both groups at Post-NPWT, accompanied by increased VEGF and CD31 expression and improved histological angiogenesis. In vitro, PROS1 knockdown restrained proliferation and tube formation but induced apoptosis of HUVECs under both normal and HG conditions. Conversely, PROS1 overexpression rescued HG-induced endothelial dysfunction by restoring cell proliferation, angiogenic capacity, and inhibiting excessive apoptosis. Importantly, the magnitude of the PROS1 increase in tissue following NPWT was positively correlated with the 4-week wound healing rate. In patients with DFU, changes in serum PROS1 were negatively correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker. Our findings demonstrate that NPWT promotes DFU healing by upregulating PROS1 expression, which in turn enhances angiogenesis and modulates inflammation. These results establish PROS1 as a promising therapeutic target and a predictive biomarker for wound healing in DFUs.

9. Triple Harm of Malnutrition and Mental Health in Low- and- Middle Income Countries: After COVID-19.
9. 中低收入国家营养不良与心理健康的双重危害:新冠疫情之后PMID:日期:2026-08-18Low- and- middle income countries (LMICs), particularly in Latin America, face a growing double burden of malnutrition, characterized by the coexistence of obesity and micronutrient deficiencies alongside high rates of mental health disorders. From the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) perspective, maternal nutrition and mental health are critical determinants of offspring growth, neurodevelopment, and long-term health. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global food crisis have exacerbated food insecurity, unhealthy diets, and symptoms of depression and anxiety, increasing the risk of maternal malnutrition in all its forms. Although most evidence on the interaction between maternal nutrition and mental health during early development comes from Asian and European populations, Latin America presents a particularly vulnerable context due to its high prevalence of obesity, micronutrient deficiencies, and perinatal mental health disorders. This work discusses the potential consequences of disruptions in maternal nutrition and mental health during early life on obesity and neurodevelopmental programming, with a focus on the role of micronutrient deficiencies in Latin America. We conclude that urgent action is needed to prevent and mitigate the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal nutrition and mental health in LMICs. Special attention should be given to children conceived and developing during and after the pandemic, as early-life exposure to maternal malnutrition, and poor mental health may adversely affect growth and future health outcomes. Strengthening food security programs, improving access to maternal mental health services, and implementing early-life interventions are essential strategies to reduce the potential intergenerational impacts of the pandemic on the offspring.

10. Molecular Prenatal Diagnosis of Monogenic Diseases, Towards Non-invasive Procedures.
10. 单基因疾病的分子产前诊断:迈向非侵入性方法PMID:日期:2026-08-18In this narrative review, we outline the historical progression of, and modern advancements in, prenatal diagnosis for monogenic diseases. Initially dependent on invasive sampling procedures, prenatal diagnosis has evolved through the integration of high-throughput molecular techniques, such as next-generation sequencing. These techniques now allow for the comprehensive detection of pathogenic variants across the genome. A major breakthrough occurred with the discovery of cell-free fetal DNA (cfDNA) in maternal plasma, originating from the placenta. This discovery enabled the development of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), which is now widely used. However, non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) for monogenic diseases took longer to develop, mainly due to the need for highly sensitive sequencing methods and sophisticated statistical analysis to determine maternal transmission. Currently, only a few countries have implemented NIPD in clinical settings. The multitude of available technologies and protocols can complicate the information provided during antenatal consultations. However, mastery of the knowledge and ethical issues surrounding NIPD will ensure optimal service and better care for pregnancies at risk of monogenic disease transmission.
