1. {"_":"Pyrolysis behavior, kinetics, and thermodynamics of waste pharmaceutical blisters under CO atmosphere.","sub":["2"]}
PMID:日期:2023-03-01The disastrous impact of COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significantly increased production and use of pharmaceutical drugs, which is accompanied by the rapid generation of waste pharmaceutical blisters (WPBs). Nonetheless, its treatment has not gained appropriate attentions and a perceptible process development was not achieved. In this study, the WPBs pyrolysis in CO atmosphere was conducted as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics were investigated. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the WPBs decomposition could be divided into two stages of 25 - 365 °C and 365 - 900 °C with mass loss of 56.5 - 60.5 wt% and 22.5 - 25.9 wt%, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated the dechlorination process initiating at ∼300 °C. The simultaneous asymmetric stretching of HCl and stretching vibration of C-Cl bond was detected in the range of 2600 - 3250 cm and 660 - 750 cm, respectively. The dechlorination reactions were almost complete at ∼520 °C and minor peaks (2900 -3100 cm) due to C-H vibrations were observed. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis indicated that the evolved products included alkanes, benzene, olefin, as well as HCl. The cycloalkenes content significantly increased during the second conversion stage, implying the addition reactions between alkanes and olefins. The apparent activation energy was calculated using three model-free methods and the values from Flynn-Wall-Ozawa model increased from 142.0 to 255.8 kJ·mol with an average value of 147.4 kJ·mol. The methods of Coats-Redfern as well as Malek were applied to determine the reaction mechanism. The one-dimensional diffusion model was more reliable to describe the WPBs pyrolysis. This study will represent a significant reference case for the thermochemical conversion of multilayer packing waste and facing the increasing demand for the medical waste recycling.

2. Resource recovery from discarded COVID-19 PPE kit through catalytic fast pyrolysis.
PMID:日期:2023-03-01During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world saw an exponential surge in the production of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, which eventually got discarded in the biomedical waste stream. In this study, thirteen different polymer samples from the PPE kit were collected and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, thermogravimetric analysis, and analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry. The characterization data showed that about 94 % by mass of components were made of only three polymers, viz. polypropylene (PP, 75.6 wt %), polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 12.5 wt %), and polycarbonate (PC, 6 wt %). The analytical pyrolysis of the PPE coverall suit (PP) yielded mainly alkenes containing 2,4-dimethyl-1-heptene as the major compound with 17 wt % yield at 600 °C. The pyrolysates from face shield (PET) were rich in benzoic acid (5.8 wt %) and acetophenone (4.8 wt %), while those from safety goggles (PC) were rich in phenol (17.6 wt %) and p-cresol (12.4 wt %) at 600 °C. HZSM-5 and HY zeolites were used for the catalytic upgradation of pyrolysates especially from PP, PET and PC. The temperature and feed-to-catalyst ratio were optimized by performing catalytic fast pyrolysis experiments at 500 °C, 600 °C and 700 °C with different feed-to-catalyst ratios 1:2, 1:4, and 1:6 (w/w). The yield of aromatic hydrocarbons, viz., BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) and naphthalene, was maximum (∼25.7 wt %) from PP coverall when HY catalyst was used at 600 °C and 1:6 (w/w) loading. In the case of PET face shield, the total yield of BTEX, naphthalene and biphenyl was maximum (27.9 wt %) at 600 °C and 1:4 (w/w) of HZSM-5, while in the case of PC goggles, it was maximum (18.6 wt %) at 700 °C and 1:4 (w/w) of HY. This study shows that the entire PPE kit can be valorized via catalytic fast pyrolysis to generate petrochemical products and platform molecules like monoaromatic hydrocarbons at high selectivities.

3. Pyrolysis of COVID-19 disposable masks and catalytic cracking of the volatiles.
PMID:日期:2022-05-01The disposable masks generated in the battle against COVID-19 has attracted wide attention in the world. Pyrolysis can convert the masks into useful chemicals and fuels. In this work, the masks are pyrolyzed at temperatures of 400-580 °C and the volatiles generated are cracked without or with catalysts at 440-580 °C. The catalysts used include metal oxides (AlO, kaolin, FeO, CeO, TiO) and molecular sieves (HZSM5, HY, β(25H), β(60H)). The yields and composition of gas and liquid products are studied in detail where the tetrahydrofuran (THF) soluble compounds are defined as the liquid product and the n-hexane soluble compounds are defined as the oil. The liquid product and the oil were identified by GC-MS and quantified by GC. Results indicate that 440 °C is sufficient for the masks' pyrolysis and the yields of gas, liquid product and oil are 23.4, 74.7 and 42.1 wt%, respectively. About 30% of the liquid product are C-C hydrocarbons while about 70% are C-C hydrocarbons trapped in the GC column (termed as column residue). The gas products are mainly C, propylene and butene, accounting for 54.8%, 22.8% and 14.5% of the total gas product, respectively. Cracking of volatiles over various catalysts converts the liquid product mainly to propylene, butene and smaller organic gases. TiO, HY and β(60H) are good catalysts, especially β(60H), which increases the yield of gas product to 86.5 wt% with 73.0% being ethylene, propylene and butene at 580 °C.

4. Simultaneous analysis of quaternary ammonium cations and corresponding halide counterions by pyrolysis gas chromatography / mass spectrometry.
PMID:日期:2022-03-01The use of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) as disinfectants has increased tremendously in the COVID-10 pandemic to inactivate Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV2). Dialkyldimethylammonium halides represent a frequently used type among QACs. Different halide anions, each ionically linked to the same quaternary ammonium cation, show clear differences in biocidal activity, toxicity and allergic potential. Likewise, the alkyl chain length at the ammonium cation induces different biocidal efficacy and toxicology. Therefore, the object of this research was to develop a rapid and reliable method for the detection of ammonium cation and halide anion in a single analytical run. For that purpose, a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method was developed for QACs of the dialkyldimethylammonium type. Pyrolytic conversion of the QACs in the injector port of the gas chromatograph into volatile molecule species allows fast and reliable subsequent GC/MS analysis. The developed method is suited for the determination of both the quaternary ammonium cation and the corresponding halide anion in a single gas chromatographic run. The application of this method to bulk material and standard material of explicitly specified didecyldimethylammonium chloride revealed deviations from the manufacturer's specifications in a range up to four-fifths. Furthermore, didecyldimethylammonium chloride was detected in a disinfectant that does not comply with the labeling requirement for biocidal ingredients. With the method presented, results can be obtained for disinfectants with minimum effort within seven minutes.

5. Pyrolysis kinetic behaviour and TG-FTIR-GC-MS analysis of Coronavirus Face Masks.
PMID:日期:2021-06-01In the times of Covid-19, face masks are considered to be the main source of protection against the virus that reduces its spread. These masks are classified as single-use medical products with a very short service life, estimated at few days, hence millions of contaminated masks are generated daily in the form of hazardous materials, what requires to develop a safe method to dispose of them, especially since some of them are loaded with viruses. 3-ply face masks (3PFM) represent the major fraction of this waste and are composed mainly from polypropylene and melt blown filter with high content of volatile substances (96.6 wt.%), what makes pyrolysis treatment an emerging technology that could be used to dispose of face masks and convert them into energy products. In this context, this work aims to study pyrolysis kinetic behaviour and TG-FTIR-GC-MS analysis of 3PFM. The research started with analysis of 3PFM using elemental analysis, proximate analysis, and compositional analyses. Afterwards, TG-FTIR system was used to study the thermal and chemical decomposition of 3PFM analyzed at different heating rates: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 °C/min. The GC/MS system was used to observe the synthesized volatile products at the maximum decomposition temperatures. After that, isoconversional methods, the advanced nonlinear integral isoconversional method, and the iterative linear integral isoconversional method were used to determine the activation energies of mask pyrolysis, while the distributed activation energy model and the independent parallel reactions kinetic model were used to fit TGA and DTG curves with deviations below <1. The TGA-DTG results showed that 3PFM can decompose in three different periods with a total weight loss of 95 % and maximum decomposition in the range 405-510 °C, while the FTIR spectra and GC-MS analysis exhibited that - C-H (aromatic and aliphatic) and 2,4-Dimethyl-1-heptene (28-43 % based on heating rate) represented the major compounds in the released volatile components. Finally, Vyazovkin and the iterative linear integral isoconversional methods gave activation energies almost similar to that obtained by the KAS isoconversional method.

6. Influence of unsaturation of hydrocarbons on the characteristics and carcinogenicity of soot particles.
PMID:日期:2020-10-01This paper concerns the effect of unsaturation of hydrocarbons (single, double, and triple bonds) on soot particle characteristics (mass, number, and size) and on the carcinogenicity of soot particles. The soot particles were produced from oxygen-free pyrolysis of five hydrocarbons, namely: propane, propylene, ethane, ethylene, and acetylene. The characteristics of soot particles were measured with the aid of a differential mobility spectrometer (Cambustion-DMS-500) and measurement of soot mass concentration was confirmed using gravimetric filter measurements. The soot particle carcinogenicity was estimated from the emission quantities of total polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the toxicity equivalent factor (TEF) of each PAH. Oxygen-free pyrolysis of the hydrocarbon fuels was conducted in a laminar tube reactor within the temperature range of 1050 -1350oC at a constant nitrogen flow rate of 20 L/min and constant fuel flow rate of 1% (vol) on carbon-1 basis. The experimental results showed that increasing unsaturation of fuels from single to double and to triple bonds increased the mass concentration, particle size, number concentration, and carcinogenicity of soot particle notably at the initial temperature of 1050 oC. Increase in the pyrolysis temperature of the tube reactor from 1050 - 1350oC, increased the mass concentration and sizes of the soot particle while the number concentration and carcinogenicity of the soot particle decreased. There was a positive correlation between the soot particle number and the corresponding soot particle carcinogenicity, while a negative correlation was observed between the soot particle mass and size with soot particle carcinogenicity regardless of the pyrolysis temperature examined. The potential implication of these observations is that, low-temperature combustion (LTC) applications, aimed at reducing emissions of soot and NOx, could produce higher soot particle number concentration of higher carcinogenicity.

7. Surface Chemistry of Electronic Cigarette Electrical Heating Coils: Effects of Metal Type on Propylene Glycol Thermal Decomposition.
PMID:日期:2018-09-01Carbonyls, a class of compounds strongly linked to pulmonary disease in smokers, are probably the most reported non-nicotine toxicants found aerosols. Reported emissions vary from negligible quantities to those far exceeding combustible cigarettes. Observations of high emissions are commonly attributed to "dry puffing", whereby the ECIG heating filament runs dry of liquid and reaches temperatures that induce thermal degradation of the ECIG vapor components at the filament's metal surface. Using a pyrolysis flow reactor, in this study we examined the potential role of surface chemistry in the formation of carbonyl compounds in ECIGs, and whether the different commercially available filament materials could potentially impact their toxicant emissions through catalysis. This information could inform nascent efforts to regulate the design of ECIGs for public health ends. Nitrogen or air saturated with propylene glycol vapor was drawn through a temperature and residence time controlled tubular quartz pyrolysis flow reactor in which nichrome, Kanthal, or stainless steel ECIG heating filament wires were inserted. A control condition with no inserted wire was also included. Concentrations of carbonyl products at the reactor outlet were measured as a function of temperature, heating filament wire material, and carrier gas composition (N2 vs air). Carbonyls were sampled using DNPH cartridges and analyzed by HPLC. ECIG heating filament wires were found to have a strong catalytic effect. Carbonyl formation initiated at temperatures lower than 250°C in the presence of the metallic wires, compared to 460°C without them. Carbonyl formation was found to be a function of the material of construction, and whether the wire was new or aged. New nichrome wires were the least reactive, but when aged they exhibited the highest reactivity. Carbonyls were formed via dehydration or oxidation reactions of PG. Carbonyl formation chemistry is catalyzed by commonly used ECIG heating filament materials, at temperatures that are well below those expected during "dry puffing". The variability in the distribution and yield of carbonyl compounds across ECIG filament materials suggests that this heretofore unaccounted variable may partially explain the wide ranges reported in the literature to date. More importantly, it suggests that ECIG construction materials may be an important variable for regulations designed to protect public health.

8. Radicals and molecular products from the gas-phase pyrolysis of lignin model compounds. Cinnamyl alcohol.
PMID:日期:2016-09-01The experimental results on detection and identification of intermediate radicals and molecular products from gas-phase pyrolysis of cinnamyl alcohol (CnA), the simplest non-phenolic lignin model compound, over the temperature range of 400-800 °C are reported. The low temperature matrix isolation - electron paramagnetic resonance (LTMI-EPR) experiments along with the theoretical calculations, provided evidences on the generation of the intermediate carbon and oxygen centered as well as oxygen-linked, conjugated radicals. A mechanistic analysis is performed based on density functional theory to explain formation of the major products from CnA pyrolysis; cinnamaldehyde, indene, styrene, benzaldehyde, 1-propynyl benzene, and 2-propenyl benzene. The evaluated bond dissociation patterns and unimolecular decomposition pathways involve dehydrogenation, dehydration, 1,3-sigmatropic H-migration, 1,2-hydrogen shift, C-O and C-C bond cleavage processes.

9. Effect of rate of pyrolysis on the textural properties of naturally-templated porous carbons from alginic acid.
PMID:日期:2016-09-01The effect of pyrolysis rate on the properties of alginic acid-derived carbonaceous materials, termed Starbon, was investigated. Thermal Gravimetry-IR was used to prepare porous carbons up to 800 °C at several rates and highlighted increased CO production at higher pyrolysis rates. N porosimetry of the resultant carbons shows how pyrolysis rate affects both the mesopore structure and thus surface area and surface energy. Surface capacity of these carbons was analysed by methylene blue dye adsorption. In general, as the rate of pyrolysis increased, the mesopore content and adsorbent capacity decreased. It is considered here that the rapid production of volatiles at these higher rates causes structural collapse of the non-templated pore network. The work here demonstrates that pyrolysis rate is a key variable which needs to be controlled to maximise the textural properties of Starbon required for adsorption applications.

10. Photochemical degradation study of polyvinyl acetate paints used in artworks by Py-GC/MS.
PMID:日期:2012-09-01Photochemical degradation of commercial polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) homopolymer and PVAc paints mixed with burnt umber, cobalt blue, cadmium red dark, nickel azo yellow and titanium white commonly used for artworks were studied by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). Py-GC/MS with single-shot technique was used for the characterization of the thermal degradation of PVAc at different temperatures, while the double-shot technique of Py-GC/MS was used to reveal the differences in the specimens before and after UV ageing, including the changes of detectable amounts of deacetylation product - acetic acid and plasticizers such as diethyl phthalate (DEP). Furthermore, the relative concentration of the pyrolysis products of the paint samples could be measured and compared in the second step of the double-shot Py-GC/MS, which are highly dependent on the presence of pigments and the ageing status of PVAc paints.
