1. Mimicry of mantis and Selaginella from Cretaceous provides new evidence for the deep-time co-evolution of insects and plants.
1. 白垩纪螳螂与卷柏的拟态为昆虫与植物的深时协同演化提供了新证据PMID:日期:2026-10-04Mimicry between insects and plants represents sophisticated survival strategies. Their long-term evolutionary interactions led to mutual adaptation, creating a complex ecological symbiosis. However, the deep-time ecological associations of mimicry between insects and plants remain limited due to the scarcity of preserved fossils. Here, we report the fossil evidences of mimicry between praying mantis and spike mosses in 98-Myr-old Kachin amber. The new Cretaceous mantis, Folimantis hyalinala gen. et sp. nov., has a rare form of leaf mimicry via abdominal leaf-shaped extensions that resemble contemporaneous vegetative leaves (trophophylls) of Selaginella in shape, size, and pattern of arrangement. The new findings provide the earliest direct evidence of the co-associations between mantis and its mimetic plants during the Cretaceous and suggest that the stem-group had already developed distinct structural features that mimic plant leaves during the early divergences of Mantodea. A diversification analysis of mimicry between fossil insects and plants from the Late Paleozoic and Mesozoic indicates that, before the rise of angiosperms in the Late Cretaceous, mimicry between insects and gymnosperms, ferns, lichens, and even Selaginella had existed for a long time and that changes in mimicry forms paralleled the evolutionary succession of plant lineages.

3. Subversion of plant endomembrane trafficking by a Plasmodiophora brassicae effector PbALE that recruits membrane components at the host-pathogen interface to aid in colonization.
3. 芸薹根肿菌效应蛋白PbALE通过招募宿主-病原界面膜组分辅助定殖,从而破坏植物内膜运输PMID:日期:2026-10-04Plasmodiophora brassicae, an intracellular biotrophic protist that causes clubroot in crucifers, extensively alters the host endomembrane system for colonization. However, the molecular mechanisms and functions of effectors to achieve this remain poorly understood. Using fluorescent and transmission electron microscopy of P. brassicae-infected Arabidopsis, we show that host endomembranes and organelles become closely associated with P. brassicae secondary plasmodial structures and are subsequently phagocytosed by the pathogen. PbALE is a secreted endomembrane-targeting effector that binds a range of phospholipids. Overexpression of the effector results in plants with glossy leaves that progressively become chlorotic. Fluorescent protein-tagged PbALE is observed in large condensates that cluster with plant organelles, disrupting endocytic recycling of plant membrane receptors and immune regulatory proteins, thereby impairing penetration resistance to nonadapted barley powdery mildew infection. PbALE's association with the P. brassicae plasmodial surface and the extrahaustorial membrane during adaptive powdery mildew infection, along with the recruitment of PI(4,5)P to these membrane contacts, supports a model in which the effector nucleates lipid-rich compartments and enriches organelles at the host-pathogen interface. Our findings reveal a lipid-binding effector that remodels host endomembranes, disrupts immune trafficking, and aids pathogen colonization, offering insights into strategies for durable disease resistance.

4. Disrupting two Arabidopsis thaliana xylosyltransferase genes results in plants deficient in thermomorphogenesis.
4. 破坏两个拟南芥木糖基转移酶基因会导致植物热形态建成缺陷PMID:日期:2026-10-01Several cell-wall-modifying enzymes have been implicated in hypocotyl elongation; however, whether cell wall biosynthesis enzymes contribute to this process, particularly under warm temperature, remains largely unknown. In Arabidopsis, xyloglucan is a major component of the primary cell wall. Xyloglucan xylosyltransferase 1 (XXT1) and XXT2 are the major enzymes required for xyloglucan biosynthesis. Here, we investigated the roles of XXT1/2 in hypocotyl elongation with a focus under warm temperature using genetic, molecular, and transcriptomic approaches. We show that XXT1/2 are required for warm-temperature-promoted hypocotyl elongation and that the elongation phenotypes of PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR 4 (PIF4) overexpression, Phytochrome B (phyB), and ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (hy5) depend partly on XXT1/2. PIF4 directly binds to and activates the promoters of XXT1 and XXT2, whereas HY5 binds to the same promoter regions and represses their expression. Importantly, the warm-temperature-induced increase in xyloglucan content is antagonistically regulated by PIF4 and HY5. Transcriptomic analyses identified warm-responsive genes whose induction depends on XXT1/2, including expansins (EXPs) and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolases (XTHs). Mutants of some EXPs and XTHs showed compromised warm-induced hypocotyl elongation. Together, our findings identify XXT1/2 as new components of the phyB-PIF4-HY5 growth network, linking environmental signaling to the cell wall biosynthetic machinery required for hypocotyl elongation.

5. Intraspecific variation in an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus affects a plant and an AMF community.
5. 一种丛枝菌根真菌的种内变异影响植物及丛枝菌根真菌群落PMID:日期:2026-09-29Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) show substantial genetic, trait, and functional variation within species. Whether this intraspecific variability has community-level consequences for plant and AMF communities is unclear. This study investigated whether introduced conspecific AMF affected a resident AMF and plant community. Mesocosms containing natural soils and a mixed plant community were inoculated with three conspecific isolates of Rhizophagus irregularis and grown for 17 wk. We measured AMF isolate abundance, plant performance (aboveground biomass, foliar phosphorus, seed production), and plant and AMF community response (diversity and composition). AMF isolate identity affected AMF isolate abundance though effects varied with host identity. Isolate identity affected aboveground biomass of two host species. A small shift in plant community composition, but not diversity, occurred between two isolate treatments. The most abundant isolate affected turnover of rare AMF taxa in the soil community but did not alter the dominant AMF community. Whether small community shifts would compound or stabilize over time remains to be seen. Given the growing use of AMF-based agricultural and forestry products, often represented by a single genetic isolate, there is a pressing need to understand how intraspecific AMF variation fits within ecological frameworks.

6. Engineering a TurboID-based proximity labeling tool to track the dynamic secretomes under salt stress.
6. 构建基于TurboID的邻近标记工具以追踪盐胁迫下的动态分泌组PMID:日期:2026-09-29Secretory proteins are essential for plant development and environmental adaptation, yet selectively profiling cargoes transported through the conventional endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi pathway remains technically challenging because apoplastic secretomes contain proteins from multiple secretion routes. We developed an ER-anchored TurboID proximity labeling method to selectively enrich proteins entering the conventional secretory pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana. Quantitative proteomics under control and salt stress conditions identified dynamic secretome changes and showed that most enriched proteins carry N-terminal signal peptides, supporting the utility of this approach for profiling conventional secretory proteins. Using this method, we found that sodium chloride (NaCl) stress remodels the conventional secretome by enhancing the secretion of a subset of cell wall-associated proteins. We further identified Apoplastic EDS1-Dependent 3 (AED3) as a salt-induced secretory protein, confirmed its ER-Golgi-dependent secretion, and demonstrated its role in salt tolerance. Overall, this study provides a useful approach for pathway-specific profiling of the conventional plant secretome, enabling the discovery of dynamic secretory proteins involved in plant environmental responses.

7. Genetic and molecular networks mediating potato tuber development.
7. 介导马铃薯块茎发育的遗传与分子网络PMID:日期:2026-09-29Potato, the world's third most important food crop, is cultivated world-wide for its tubers that store high-energy photoassimilates, which are predominantly induced under short photoperiods with cooler night temperatures. The stored photoassimilates ensure plant survival by vegetative propagation and to support subsequent shoot growth. The leaf-generated main tuberigen signal, StSP6A, upon its transport to stolon, forms tuber-inducing Tuberigen Activation Complex (TAC). Misregulation or redirection of StSP6A transport toward lateral buds contributes to aerial tuber formation, thereby adversely affecting underground tuber yield. The activity of TAC is inhibited by antituberigens, such as StAST1 and StTFL1, which compete with StSP6A and constitute anti-TAC. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying underground and aerial tuber formation, their regulation by antituberigen factors, key genes controlling stolon-to-tuber transitions, the role of StSWEET-StSUT transporters in establishing the source-sink relationship essential for tuber development, and the evolution and global dissemination of modern potato cultivars. Collectively, insights from potato provide a valuable framework for understanding the conserved and divergent mechanisms governing storage organ development in other economically important crops.

8. Linking genomic variation to floral trait adaptation across species boundaries.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29Flowers are highly diverse in shape, scent, and colour and may differ strikingly even among closely related species. Floral traits experience correlational selection favouring trait combinations that maximise plant reproduction, leading to outstanding questions on how floral trait divergence evolves in closely related species. In this review, we take a quantitative genetic perspective and ask whether and how the genetic architecture of floral trait divergence depends on adaptation to specific pollination systems and how it informs on the dynamics of the assembly of floral traits during divergence. After reviewing results from studies mapping divergent floral traits in closely related species, we emphasise the value of combining trait mapping approaches with approaches that identify genomic variation differentiating species boundaries. We show how the combination of these approaches has been successful in recent studies and how it could improve our understanding of floral diversification.

10. Coupled decline in growth and fine-branching signals the onset of drought-induced European beech mortality.
PMID:日期:2026-09-23Severe and recurrent droughts have caused widespread canopy decline and mortality in European forests. Drought-induced mortality occurs when structural damage and physiological dysfunction impair a tree's ability to recover, yet it remains unclear when trees transition from reversible stress to irreversible vitality loss at the whole-tree level. We combined detailed information on fine-branching architecture derived from terrestrial laser scanning with radial growth data from 174 trees to assess how structural and growth decline relate to drought-induced mortality in European beech (Fagus sylvatica). We found that European beech trees cross a critical tipping point under drought stress when pronounced declines in fine-branching and radial growth occur together. Mortality probability increased sharply once relative twig length (= fine-branching) dropped below c. 325 m m and relative growth fell below c. 7%, equaling a ≥ 75% mortality probability within 3 yr, whereas neither indicator alone reliably captured this transition. Our results demonstrate that drought-induced vitality loss in an angiosperm follows distinct trajectories but converges on a critical zone of coupled crown and growth decline that marks an 'area of no return.' Linking crown deterioration with growth performance provides a mechanistic early-warning signal of irreversible vitality loss under intensifying climate extremes.
