1. Raman spectroscopic measurements and imaging on sub-newton Berkovich and spherical imprints in fused silica.
1. 亚牛顿Berkovich和熔融石英球形印记的拉曼光谱测量和成像PMID:日期:2024-02-05This paper lays out best practices for evaluating and optimizing a Raman spectroscopy setup to ensure the collection of reliable spectral data and/or Raman images on indented glasses. The Raman spectroscopic measurements and imaging were conducted on residual imprints created with Berkovich and spherical probes at forces in the sub-newton range in fused silica. The capability of a conventional optical instrument for mapping spectral variations in sub-newton imprints on glasses is evaluated by studying the influence of the optical configuration (choice of microscope objective) on the spatial resolution of the spectroscopy setup. The spatial resolution was quantitatively assessed in Z profile measurements and qualitatively evaluated by mapping changes in spectral features and correlated densification within the indented regions of fused silica specimens. The paper discusses the importance of appropriately matching the analysis volume of the Raman spectroscopic setup with the size of the indentation-induced densification zone by demonstrating the detrimental effects a mismatch may have on accurately capturing the magnitude of spectral changes and correlated densification.

2. Nucleation and early stage crystallization in barium disilicate glass.
2. 二硅酸钡玻璃中的成核与早期结晶PMID:日期:2020-11Barium disilicate is one of the glass-ceramic systems where internal nucleation and crystallization can occur from quenched glass upon heat treatment without requiring nucleating agents. The structural origin of the nano-clusters formed during low temperature heat treatment is of great interest in gaining a fundamental understanding of nucleation kinetics in silicate glasses. Here, we present experimental investigations on the low temperature heat treatment of barium disilicate (BaO·2SiO) glass. Several experimental techniques were used to characterize the structural nature of barium disilicate glasses that were heat treated between the glass transition temperature, T, and the peak temperature of crystal growth, T The data show that small amounts of crystallites including BaSiO as well as other higher Ba/Si ratio phases are formed. Moreover, unlike that reported for lower BaO content (BaO<33mol%) barium silicate glass or the analogous LiO-SiO glasses, no clear evidence is observed for liquid/liquid phase separation in barium disilicate glass.

3. {"_":" Raman spectroscopic measurements of the deformation region in indented glasses.","i":["In-situ"]}
3. {"_":" 压痕玻璃变形区域的拉曼光谱测量。","i":["原位"]}PMID:日期:2019This paper describes the design and integration of a custom-built optical instrument for Raman microscopy suitable for collecting high-quality spectroscopic data during the indentation of glass materials. It will further show that the reported experimental setup enables meaningful spectroscopic observations during indentation of fused silica at forces in the millinewton range. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the vital importance of matching the analysis volume of the Raman microscope with the indentation-induced deformation volume to capture the full extent of the related spectral alterations by minimizing spectral contributions from the unperturbed bulk material ( and ) and indenter probe ( only). In this context, the paper will also touch upon possible pitfalls in and Raman measurements on indented glasses in cases where the analysis and deformation volumes are not well matched and describe the misinterpretations that may result.

4. The glass transition in high-density amorphous ice.
4. 高密度非晶冰中的玻璃化转变PMID:日期:2015-01-01There has been a long controversy regarding the glass transition in low-density amorphous ice (LDA). The central question is whether or not it transforms to an ultraviscous liquid state above 136 K at ambient pressure prior to crystallization. Currently, the most widespread interpretation of the experimental findings is in terms of a transformation to a superstrong liquid above 136 K. In the last decade some work has also been devoted to the study of the glass transition in high-density amorphous ice (HDA) which is in the focus of the present review. At ambient pressure HDA is metastable against both ice I and LDA, whereas at > 0.2 GPa HDA is no longer metastable against LDA, but merely against high-pressure forms of crystalline ice. The first experimental observation interpreted as the glass transition of HDA was made using in situ methods by Mishima, who reported a glass transition temperature T of 160 K at 0.40 GPa. Soon thereafter Andersson and Inaba reported a much lower glass transition temperature of 122 K at 1.0 GPa. Based on the pressure dependence of HDA's T measured in Innsbruck, we suggest that they were in fact probing the distinct glass transition of very high-density amorphous ice (VHDA). Very recently the glass transition in HDA was also observed at ambient pressure at 116 K. That is, LDA and HDA show two distinct glass transitions, clearly separated by about 20 K at ambient pressure. In summary, this suggests that three glass transition lines can be defined in the p-T plane for LDA, HDA, and VHDA.

5. Are coarse-grained models apt to detect protein thermal stability? The case of OPEP force field.
PMID:日期:2014-07-22We present the first investigation of the kinetic and thermodynamic stability of two homologous thermophilic and mesophilic proteins based on the coarse-grained model OPEP. The object of our investigation is a pair of G-domains of relatively large size, 200 amino acids each, with an experimental stability gap of about 40 K. The OPEP force field is able to maintain stable the fold of these relatively large proteins within the hundrend-nanosecond time scale without including external constraints. This makes possible to characterize the conformational landscape of the folded protein as well as to explore the unfolding. In agreement with all-atom simulations used as a reference, we show that the conformational landscape of the thermophilic protein is characterized by a larger number of substates with slower dynamics on the network of states and more resilient to temperature increase. Moreover, we verify the stability gap between the two proteins using replica-exchange simulations and estimate a difference between the melting temperatures of about 23 K, in fair agreement with experiment. The detailed investigation of the unfolding thermodynamics, allows to gain insight into the mechanism underlying the enhanced stability of the thermophile relating it to a smaller heat capacity of unfolding.

6. Crystallization studies on rare-earth co-doped fluorozirconate-based glasses.
6. 稀土共掺氟锆酸盐基玻璃的结晶研究PMID:日期:2013-06-08This work focuses on the structural changes of barium chloride (BaCl) nanoparticles in fluorochlorozirconate-based glass ceramics when doped with two different luminescent activators, in this case rare-earth (RE) ions, and thermally processed using a differential scanning calorimeter. In a first step, only europium in its divalent and trivalent oxidation states, Eu and Eu, is investigated, which shows no significant influence on the crystallization of hexagonal phase BaCl. However, higher amounts of Eu increase the activation energy of the phase transition to an orthorhombic crystal structure. In a second step, nucleation and nanocrystal growth are influenced by changing the structural environment of the glasses by co-doping with Eu and trivalent Gd, Nd, Yb, or Tb, due to the different atomic radii and electro-negativity of the co-dopants.

7. Crystallization behavior of rare-earth doped fluorochlorozirconate glasses.
7. 稀土掺杂氟氯锆酸盐玻璃的结晶行为PMID:日期:2010-12-18A series of fluorochlorozirconate (FCZ) glasses, each doped with a different rare-earth, was prepared and examined to determine thermal stability and activation energy, , of the dopant dependent BaCl crystallization. Non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were done to investigate the endothermic and exothermic reactions upon heat treatment of the glass samples. In comparison to the rare-earth free FCZ glass, significant changes in the Hruby constant, , and were found due to the addition of a rare-earth and also between the individual dopants.

8. Differential scanning calorimetry investigations on Eu-doped fluorozirconate-based glass ceramics.
8. 基于掺铕氟锆酸盐玻璃陶瓷的差示扫描量热法研究PMID:日期:2010-12-01The properties of Eu-doped fluorochlorozirconate (FCZ) glass ceramics upon thermal processing and the influence of Eu-doping on the formation of BaCl(2) nanocrystals therein have been investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry indicates that higher Eu-doping shifts the crystallization peak of the nanocrystals in the glass to lower temperatures, while the glass transition temperature remains constant. The activation energy and the thermal stability parameters for the BaCl(2) crystallization are determined.
