1. High-Sensitivity Hydrogen Gas Permeation: System Development, Sample Preparation, and Influence of Testing Variables.
PMID:日期:2026-06-30There is a need to develop quantitative, high-resolution hydrogen gas (H ) permeation techniques to provide a better understanding of hydrogen-material interactions, from hydrogen uptake and diffusion to embrittlement. This study aims to develop and validate a high-sensitivity H permeation system, which is then leveraged to systematically quantify the influence of surface condition and key testing variables (surface oxides, residual gas impurities, pressure, and temperature) on hydrogen permeation. A gas permeation system capable of operating at pressures up to 50 bar and temperatures up to 250 C was developed, incorporating high-sensitivity mass spectrometric detection and controlled surface preparation protocols. Permeation transients were analysed in a model material (annealed pure Fe) to determine hydrogen diffusivity and permeability under systematically varied surface states, oxygen contents, pressures and temperatures. Surface oxides are shown to play a dominant role in controlling hydrogen permeation at room temperature. The presence of oxide layers can severely hinder or completely suppress hydrogen uptake, with measurable permeation requiring oxide removal via pickling and Pd coating on both surfaces, or activation through hydrogen-assisted reduction at elevated temperature. Residual oxygen present prior to hydrogen exposure further reduces permeability by modifying surface boundary conditions, indicating strongly surface-controlled kinetics. Under optimised surface conditions, hydrogen transport follows bulk diffusion-controlled behaviour, with steady-state flux obeying Sieverts' law at 25 C (1-5 bar) and diffusivity and permeability exhibiting Arrhenius behaviour between 25 and 150 C at 5 bar, indicating bulk diffusion-controlled transport. The developed high-sensitivity permeation system resolves hydrogen fluxes as low as 1.98 10 mol/(m s) and provides a robust platform for investigating surface, mechanical and environmental effects on hydrogen permeation under realistic service conditions.

2. {"_":"A Multiscale Experimental Method for Characterizing the Mechanical Response of Oil Paint.","i":["In-Situ"]}
PMID:日期:2026-04-15The mechanical behavior of historical oil paint is governed by complex, multiscale chemo-mechanical processes that evolve over decades. Yet, existing mechanical testing approaches cannot fully characterize its tensile response or resolve the microscale deformation and damage phenomena that drive cracking and delamination in historical artworks. The aim of this work is to develop an experimental method capable of capturing the mechanical response of small-sized paint samples and linking local deformation and damage mechanisms to their overall tensile behavior. A novel methodology is introduced that combines micro-tensile testing and high-magnification optical profilometry with full-field Digital Image Correlation for the first time in oil paint research. The method enables the construction of multiple true stress-true strain curves and the extraction of mesoscopic and macroscopic mechanical properties from a single experiment, allowing statistically meaningful characterization from minimal paint material. The mesoscale and macroscopic responses provide key mechanical properties (Young's modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, strain at break, and Poisson's ratio) consistent with values reported in the literature. Full-field measurements reveal strain localization near pigment-rich regions, where damage accumulates and microcracks initiate. The tested aged samples consistently exhibit increased stiffness and brittleness, while differences in chemical formulation (Prussian Blue versus Titanium White pigments) lead to distinct ductile or brittle responses. The proposed methodology enables comprehensive multiscale mechanical characterization of oil paint and captures the deformation mechanisms underlying aging and composition-dependent behavior, representing an important step toward the mechanical characterization of original historical paint material.

3. The In-Situ Mechanics of the Tricuspid Valve: Strain Heterogeneity and Anisotropy via 3D Digital Image Correlation.
PMID:日期:2026-02-25The mechanics of the tricuspid valve are a critical determinant of its function and dysfunction. With millions suffering from tricuspid regurgitation, there is a pressing need to fill persistent knowledge gaps. A better understanding of the valve's mechanics is essential for improving repair strategies and biomaterial-based replacements. This study aimed to quantify the differences in strains within leaflets and between leaflets under both physiological and pathological loads. We mounted six whole porcine heart preparations in vitro and measured full-field leaflet strains using three-dimensional digital image correlation.We varied peak transvalvular pressures between 20, 50, and 80 mmHg and applied three levels of annular dilation (0%, 30%, and 60%). Strain data were transformed into leaflet-specific radial and circumferential components, and compared statistically using linear mixed-effects models. Leaflet strains exhibited significant within- and between-leaflet heterogeneity. Strain magnitude increased with pressure but not with annular dilation. Additionally, strains were directionally dependent. Furthermore, we found that anterior and posterior leaflet strains near the annulus, in the belly, and near the free edge did not differ significantly. In contrast, strains in the septal leaflet increased from the annulus to the free edge. These data provide spatially and directionally resolved strain maps of all three tricuspid valve leaflets in whole-heart preparations. By filling a critical knowledge gap, these findings may guide the design of biomaterials for valve repair and replacement.

4. Image-based Evaluation of Cutting Forces During Ultrasonic Cutting of Bone.
PMID:日期:2025-12-09Ultrasonic surgical cutting tools are an appealing alternative to traditional devices. The measurement of time-resolved ultrasonic cutting forces is important to understand the material removal process but a challenge because of inertial effects affecting the results of traditional load cells. The present work details an attempt to resolve the cutting force of an ultrasonically powered surgical tool at the time scale of the 25 kHz ultrasonic excitation, by using the tool tip itself as the load cell. Ultra-high speed imaging is used in conjunction with Digital Image Correlation to measure strain and acceleration in the cutting blade. Dynamic equilibrium is then leveraged to identify the cutting force at the tool tip within a single cutting cycle of the tool. The methodology is first verified on simulated data before being applied to experiments on cortical bovine bone (free vibrations and cutting). The force detection threshold was evaluated on the order of 5 N, recorded at 1 Mfps with a Shimadzu HPV-X camera. A particular difficulty was that the blade exhibited some out-of-plane bending which created a bias on the identified cutting force. Finally, it was possible to detect that when the blade engaged in the workpiece, a compressive force acted on the tool while during the disengagement part of the cycle, the force was null. It was shown that it was possible to use the thin flat blade of an in-house developed ultrasonic surgical tool to measure time-resolved cutting forces.

5. Influence of Temperature, Strain Rate, and Condition on the Mechanical Response of an AlSi-PES Abradable.
PMID:日期:2025-07-01To improve the efficiency and operational stability of aero-engine compressors, abradable liners are used to facilitate reduced clearances between the blade tips and the surrounding casing. However, their properties are highly variable due to sensitivities in the plasma spraying process and complex in-service phenomena such as blade-casing interactions and thermal ageing. The abradable variability makes it difficult to model blade-casing interactions accurately, leading to suboptimal blade geometries and clearances. This study addresses the impact of abradable condition on its mechanical behaviour and on the blade-casing interaction response. The response and failure behaviour of an aluminium-silicon-polyester abradable under quasi-static (0.01 s ) and high-rate (850 s ) loading conditions over a range of temperatures and pre-treatments have been characterised. Pre-treatments representative of various points throughout the lifecycle of an abradable were used. The abradable exhibited sensitivity to strain rate, temperature, and particularly the state of the polyester phase. Ageing the polyester reduced its compliance, increasing the failure stress by up to 10% at high loading rates compared to the as-sprayed material. In the compacted specimens, ageing increased the failure stress by up to 50%, attributed to enhanced thermal stability from increased polyester crystallinity. A better understanding of abradables and their failure behaviour will improve compressor blade and abradable system design, enabling optimal tip clearances and enhancing overall engine performance. These tests provided an account of condition-specific compressive failure behaviour, beginning to bridge the gap between phenomenological accounts from experimental blade-abradable rub tests and observed abradable response.

6. Evaluation of Recyclable Multilayer Packaging Designs Utilising Controlled Interlayer Adhesion.
6. 利用受控层间粘附的可回收多层包装设计评估PMID:日期:2025-06-16The packaging industry is utilising increased levels of bio-based or recycled plastics and virgin plastic-based packaging is irreplaceable in more demanding applications such as food and pharmaceutical storage where different types of functional plastics are combined in a laminate form to produce multilayered packaging (MLP). Even though MLP are very effective in packaging applications, the typical multilayer format is a barrier to effective recycling, limiting the value and market for the use of recovered materials. This article investigates two new multilayer packaging design concepts which enable separation of the constituent layers in MLP. In these designs, the typical thermoset based adhesive layer in MLP is replaced by (i) localised adhesion by patterning surface treatments on the layers (no dedicated tie-layer) and (ii) by a water-soluble adhesive layer. T-peel testing is performed to evaluate the level of adhesion. The feasibility of these designs to enable layer separation was also investigated through representative tests that the simulated typical processes of shredding and washing in recycling streams. The effectiveness of masks to localise surface treatment and thus create regions of higher and lower adhesion was captured in the peel test results for design A. The comparatively low levels of adhesion in design A enabled an easy separation of layers. An excellent adhesive was observed in peel test for design B with water soluble tie layer and the layers were separated by dissolving the tie layer in water. These concepts targeting the interface between MLP layers can be scaled with MLP complexity. Potentially, a combination of the two strategies could yield an optimal solution, where the total surface area of adhered MLP is reduced due to localised adhesion and a distinct water-soluble adhesive layer provides the necessary adhesive strength comparable to current MLP applications. 7. {"_":"通过拉伸试验和X射线计算机断层扫描研究增材制造316L不锈钢中的4D孔隙演化。","i":["原位"]}PMID:日期:2025-04-17Many aspects of ductile failure through microvoid coalescence remain elusive due to the challenging spatial and temporal scales it operates on. Experimentally resolving all aspects of the process remains a significant goal of researchers. Much of the current understanding has been derived from post-mortem metallography, leaving key aspects of its evolution undocumented. This work builds on efforts using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) characterize voids and their evolution under loading. It employs XCT tensile testing on 316L Stainless Steel samples that were constructed by laser powder bed fusion that contain tailored, pre-existing voids with a spatial scale relevant to the growth and evolution stages of microvoid coalescence. Pre-existing voids extended the observation window for monitoring void growth and interaction under loading. They also enhanced fiducial correlation of voids during deformation. Void populations were found to increase under loading as their deformed dimensions rendered them detectable by the XCT algorithm. Neighboring voids underwent interconnection events by a cleavage process when stress concentrations between them exceeded the macroscopic yield stress. Pores that did not undergo interconnection events were found to revert to their initial size and population after unloading. Finally, the porosity structure before failure was correlated to features on the fracture surface with high fidelity. This unique combination of XCT tensile testing on samples with tailored void structure enabled new visualization and quantification of void evolution under load as well as strong correlation to the observed stress-strain behavior and post-mortem fracture characteristics.

8. {"_":"一种用于在不锈钢中产生应力腐蚀开裂的腐蚀小冲杆试验。","i":["原位"]}PMID:日期:2025-03-27Spent AGR (advanced gas-cooled reactor) fuel cladding may suffer from stress corrosion cracking (SCC) during the interim storage period in cooling ponds and compromise the structural integrity of fuel storage. To better understand the effect of SCC, a new small punch test (SPT) setup was developed in this study that can use a small volume of sample to limit the safety concerns about irradiated materials. The SPT setup accelerated SCC in a surrogate material 304 stainless steel by introducing a circulation of a heated corrosive solution. Preliminary tests were performed to find the loading and environmental conditions that can develop SCC in the surrogate material. A finite element model was used to estimate the mechanical behaviour of the material during the test. Several samples were tested under different conditions, and SCC and other forms of corrosion behaviours were observed on the samples. The effects of different corrosive environments were obtained by further characterisation including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical profilometry. The experiment demonstrated the new setup can develop SCC from a small volume of sample in a short period of time. Several improvements are listed including extra procedures to enable the experiments on the irradiated fuel materials.

9. An Experimental Method for Fatigue Testing Cast Iron Water Pipes Using Combined Internal Water Pressure and Bending Loads.
PMID:日期:2025-02-10Investigations into the fatigue failures mechanism of Grey Cast Iron (GCI) water pipes are inhibited by the lack of a lab-based method to conduct extensive high-cycle biaxial fatigue test programmes. The work presented in this paper developed and tested a novel experiment capable of causing controlled fatigue failures of GCI pipe specimens in the high-cycle fatigue regime using bending and internal water pressure fatigue loading. A novel four-point bending and internal water pressure fatigue testing system was developed to apply constant amplitude out-of-phase biaxial loading to 58 mm diameter GCI pipes at 1.7 Hz. To verify the ability of this equipment to apply known stresses and repeatable loads to pipe specimens a series of tests were conducted. A finite element model of the pipe specimen was used to estimate the strains and displacements applied by the equipment. Experimental strains and displacements were mainly within ± 10% of the estimated values and the pressure amplitudes measured over 10 cycles were within ± 3% of the average. Dynamic load effects occurred at higher bending loads, but these were quantified and accounted for. Trial destructive tests revealed that the lifespan of leaking fatigue cracks in GCI pipes with uniform wall-loss subject to combined internal pressure and bending fatigue loads is less than 1% of the total cycles-to-burst. The experimental method developed was able to apply combined, out-of-phase internal pressure and bending fatigue loads accurately and consistently to small-dimeter GCI pipes, and cause these pipes to develop high-cycle fatigue regime failures.

10. A Comparative Study of the Modal Response of Additively and Subtractively Manufactured Thin Plates After Thermal Loading.
10. 增材与减材制造薄板热载荷后模态响应的对比研究PMID:日期:2025-01-23Additively-manufactured parts contain residual stresses induced by manufacturing. These residual stresses can be relaxed or redistributed by thermal loading. The presence of internal stress influences the dynamic response of parts, and this is of particular interest in thin plates subject to thermoacoustic loading in hypersonic vehicles and fusion reactors. To measure the changes in shape and modal frequencies caused by thermal loading of geometrically-reinforced thin plates that were additively manufactured in Inconel 625. Plates were additively-manufactured in landscape and portrait orientations using laser powder bed fusion. The plates were heated to a nominal temperature of 820 °C, which was expected to alleviate the residual stress from the build process. Pre- and post-heating, their modal frequencies were found experimentally and pulsed-laser stereo (3D) digital image correlation was used to evaluate their modal shapes. The resultant modal frequencies and shapes were compared with those from a subtractively-manufactured plate. It was found that the heat cycle changed the shape of the plates relative to their as-manufactured state in addition to changing their natural frequencies and modal shapes. The change in shape induced by heating caused shifts in the natural frequencies and changes in the corresponding modal shapes. The results show quantitatively for the first time the important role that residual stresses can play in the dynamic response of geometrically-reinforced thin plates manufactured by additive and subtractive processes.
