1. Shape-optimized Model-based Reconstruction Algorithm for Radiacoustic Imaging.
[英文摘要] We present a shape-optimized model-based (SOMB) reconstruction framework that addresses the limited-view problem in radiacoustic imaging arising from restricted detector placement, which creates severely ill-posed inverse problems that manifest as characteristic artifacts in reconstructed images. We first reconstruct the approximate dose-region boundary using a parametric level set-based shape optimization. Pointwise model-based dose reconstruction is then performed only within this shape-constrained region. By restricting reconstruction from the full imaging domain to only the pixels within the identified region, the number of unknowns is significantly reduced, transforming a severely ill-posed inverse problem into a significantly better-constrained one. We validate this methodology through computational studies and experiments using clinical X-ray and proton radiation sources under limited angular coverage data acquisition settings. Results demonstrate substantial artifact reduction and improved accuracy compared to standard model-based reconstructions, with 3-25% improvement in correlation coefficients across different imaging settings-more pronounced improvements occurring under stronger limited-view conditions. This shape-optimized approach provides a viable pathway for accurate radiation therapy monitoring under clinically realistic detector configurations.

2. 3D protoacoustic radiography: A proof of principle study.
2025-02-17We propose protoacoustic radiography (PAR), an imaging modality combining proton excitation and acoustic detection for three-dimensional (3D) imaging from a single proton projection. PAR avoids the effect of multiple Coulomb scattering in imaging by detecting ultrasound. Proton-induced acoustic waves propagate spherically, enabling 3D imaging from a single projection. Additionally, the distinctive feature of proton beams-concentrating energy deposition primarily at the Bragg peak-allows for precise depth-selectivity through proton energy tuning. We performed PAR using clinical proton machines, and our results demonstrate the capability of PAR to reconstruct targets at various depths (between ∼20 and 23 cm) with an axial resolution of 1.3 mm by fully leveraging the Bragg peak and by tuning the kinetic energy of the proton beam. PAR offers opportunities for precise structural determination with protons both in biomedicine and nondestructive testing.

3. Non-contact electroacoustic tomography with optical interferometer for electroporation therapy monitoring.
2025-01-13Electroacoustic imaging is an imaging modality used to detect electric field energy distribution during electroporation, offering valuable guidance for clinical procedures, particularly in deep tissues. Traditionally, single-element piezoelectric transducers or arrays have been employed for this purpose. However, these piezoelectric sensors are sensitive to electromagnetic interference and require physical contact with the sample through a coupling medium, raising concerns for both clinical and preclinical applications. To overcome these limitations, a multi-channel random quadrature ultrasonics system has been developed, enabling non-contact detection of electroacoustic signals. In this study, we demonstrated that this non-contact technique effectively detects electroacoustic signals, identifies electroporation regions, and reconstructs electric energy distribution, offering a promising approach for monitoring electroporation therapy.

4. ATP-induced reconfiguration of the micro-viscoelasticity of cardiac and skeletal myosin solutions.
PMID:日期:2024-10-21We study the high-frequency, micro-mechanical response of suspensions composed of cardiac and skeletal muscle myosin by optical trapping interferometry. We observe that in low ionic strength solutions, upon the addition of magnesium adenosine triphosphate (MgATP), myosin suspensions radically change their micro-mechanics properties, generating a viscoelastic fluid characterized by a complex modulus similar to a suspension of worm-like micelles. This transduction of energy, from chemical to mechanical, may be related to the relaxed states of myosin, which regulate muscle contractility and can be involved in the etiology of many myopathies. Within an analogous generic mechanical response, cardiac and skeletal myosin suspensions provide different stress relaxation times, elastic modulus values, and characteristic lengths. These discrepancies probably rely on the dissimilar physiological functions of cardiac and skeletal muscle, on the different MgATPase hydrolysis rates of cardiac and skeletal myosins, and on the observed distinct cooperative behavior of their myosin heads in the super-relaxed state. studies like these allow us to understand the foundations of muscle cell mechanics on the micro-scale, and may contribute to the engineering of biological materials whose micro-mechanics can be activated by energy regulators.

5. Neural network-enabled, all-electronic control of non-Newtonian fluid flow.
2024-10-14Real-time, all-electronic control of non-Newtonian fluid flow through a microscale channel is crucial for various applications in manufacturing and healthcare. However, existing methods lack the sensitivity required for accurate measurement and the real-time responsiveness necessary for effective adjustment. Here, we demonstrate an all-electronic system that enables closed-loop, real-time, high-sensitivity control of various waveforms of non-Newtonian fluid flow (0.76 l min) through a micro-sized outlet. Our approach combines a contactless, cuff-like flow sensor with a neural-network control program. This system offers a simple, miniaturized, versatile, yet high-performance solution for non-Newtonian fluid flow control, easily integrated into existing setups.

6. Impedance matching in optically induced dielectrophoresis: Effect of medium conductivity on trapping force.
2024-07-29An impedance analysis for optically induced dielectrophoresis is presented. A circuit model is developed for this purpose. The model parameters are fully defined in terms of the geometrical and material properties of the system. It is shown that trapping force can only be generated when the material properties follow certain impedance matching conditions. The factor is introduced to succinctly quantify the phenomenon. It is used to calculate bounds on the allowed electrical conductivity of the suspension medium. Results from the proposed model are found to be in good agreement with full-wave numerical simulations. By computing the acceptable set of material parameters with little computational cost, the presented analysis can streamline ODEP system design for various applications.

8. A 64-pixel mid-infrared single-photon imager based on superconducting nanowire detectors.
PMID:日期:2024-01-25A large-format mid-infrared single-photon imager with very low dark count rates would enable a broad range of applications in fields like astronomy and chemistry. Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are a mature photon-counting technology as demonstrated by their figures of merit such as high detection efficiencies and very low dark count rates. However, scaling SNSPDs to large array sizes for mid-infrared applications requires sophisticated readout architectures in addition to superconducting materials development. In this work, an SNSPD array design that combines a thermally coupled row-column multiplexing architecture with a thermally coupled time-of-flight transmission line was developed for mid-infrared applications. The design requires only six cables and can be scaled to larger array sizes. The demonstration of a 64-pixel array shows promising results for wavelengths between 3.4 μm and 10 μm, which will enable the use of this single-photon detector technology for a broad range of new applications.

9. Measuring the permittivity of fused silica with planar on-wafer structures up to 325 GHz.
PMID:日期:2024Fused silica has become an interesting alternative to silicon for millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications. Unfortunately, there are a few reports on the measurement of fused silica's permittivity above 110 GHz that use electrical rather than optical methods. Given that mmWave applications use electrical circuits, additional electrical data would be useful to industry. To test the feasibility of electrical methods, we applied on-wafer techniques based on coplanar waveguide transmission lines to measure the complex permittivity of fused silica to 325 GHz. Our approach used the multiline thru-reflect-line algorithm on the scattering parameter measurements of transmission lines. Our method combined these results with dc measurements of the resistivity of the metals, simulations of the coplanar waveguide cross section, and dimensional metrology. In short, our measurements do not show significant dielectric dispersion for fused silica up to 325 GHz. The resulting complex permittivity was and a loss tangent from 320 MHz to 325 GHz. To support our conclusions, we performed an uncertainty analysis considering relevant sources of uncertainty. In the broader context, these results show that fused silica is a suitable substrate for mmWave electronics where the loss tangent must be less than 0.005 up to 325 GHz.
