1. {"_":"Innovative Cold Atmospheric Plasma (iCAP) Decreases Mucopurulent Corneal Ulcer Formation and Edema and Reduces Bacterial Load in Keratitis.","i":["Pseudomonas"]}
PMID:日期:2019-12-27To evaluate the effect of application of 3% air in helium cold atmospheric plasma jet, using an inexpensive device termed iCAP, in corneal scratch wound closure and the treatment of () keratitis . Thermal imaging to measure temperature of surfaces to which iCAP was applied and UV energy density delivered by iCAP were measured. Scratch wounds inflicted on cultures of a human corneal epithelial cell line were treated with iCAP and wound widths at various times post-application were measured. Rabbit eyes infected with were treated with iCAP and slit lamp biomicroscope examination conducted to determine corneal health outcomes 25h post infection. Corneal homogenates were plated on agar and viable bacterial colonies enumerated to determine the effect of iCAP on bacterial load in keratitis. iCAP was shown to operate in the non-thermal regime and also shown to deliver much lower UV energy density than that necessary to cause harmful effects on ocular tissue. iCAP treatment significantly improved the rate of scratch wound gap closure in a human corneal epithelial cell line compared to controls. , iCAP treatment of keratitis infection in the rabbit eyes (N = 20) significantly reduced the incidence of corneal ulcer (P = 0.003) and corneal edema (P = 0.011) and significantly improved total cornea health (P = 0.034) compared to untreated (N = 10). Finally, iCAP treatment of keratitis infection in the rabbit eyes (N = 19) significantly reduced bacterial loads (P = 0.012) compared to untreated (N = 9). Our results strongly suggest that iCAP treatment was effective in improving corneal epithelial defect closure , reducing ulcer formation and decreasing inflammation in infected corneas and decreasing bacterial loads in infected corneas which led to improved overall cornea health outcomes . Further studies to investigate iCAP's safety and efficacy against other infectious microbes responsible for causing ulcerative keratitis, with and without co-treatment with antimicrobial therapies are warranted.

2. Surface Treatment with Non-thermal Humid Argon Plasma as a Treatment for Allergic Contact Dermatitis in a Mouse Model.
PMID:日期:2018-09-26Cold plasma generated at atmospheric pressure has attracted intense interest in biomedical applications, particularly as an antimicrobial treatment. Here we report the therapeutic effect of humidified cold argon plasma on allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in a mouse model. Treatment was carried out with different gas compositions: argon gas containing small amounts of either N, O, or HO. The best effect was obtained using humid plasma (HO addition), where the ACD symptoms decreased after one or two 1-min plasma treatments. Even for severe ACD with ulcers and crust formation, the humid plasma-treated mice recovered faster than the control group. Histopathological analysis by H&E-staining showed enhanced epithelialization with formation of collagen and hair follicles in the affected skin after humid plasma exposure. The therapeutic ability of the humid argon plasma discharge was proposed to be induced by reactive oxygen species (HO) transported from the discharge zone, which are adhesive and accumulate on the skin surface, penetrating the subcutis to eliminate inflammation. However, in treatments using plasma with addition of oxygen or nitrogen (without water) the active gaseous species are blocked due to poor adhesion to and penetration into the dry ACD skin, with correspondingly poor treatment effects. The enhanced healing in ACD mice indicate the non-thermal humid plasma could be a potential alternative approach for therapy of ACD and other inflammatory skin diseases.

4. Plasma treatment of dentin surfaces for improving self-etching adhesive/dentin interface bonding.
PMID:日期:2015-06-01This study is to evaluate plasma treatment effects on dentin surfaces for improving self-etching adhesive and dentin interface bonding. Extracted unerupted human third molars were used after crown removal to expose dentin. One half of each dentin surface was treated with atmospheric non-thermal argon plasmas, while another half was untreated and used as the same tooth control. Self-etching adhesive and universal resin composite was applied to the dentin surfaces as directed. After restoration, the adhesive-dentin bonding strength was evaluated by micro-tensile bonding strength (μTBS) test. Bonding strength data was analyzed using histograms and Welch's t-test based on unequal variances. μTBS test results showed that, with plasma treatment, the average μTBS value increased to 69.7±11.5 MPa as compared with the 57.1±17.5 MPa obtained from the untreated controls. After 2 months immersion of the restored teeth in 37 °C phosphate buffered saline (PBS), the adhesive-dentin bonding strengths of the plasma-treated specimens slightly decreased from 69.7±11.5 MPa to 63.9±14.4 MPa, while the strengths of the untreated specimens reduced from 57.1±17.5 MPa to 48.9±14.6 MPa. Water contact angle measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination verified that plasma treatment followed by water rewetting could partially open dentin tubules, which could enhance adhesive penetration to form thicker hybrid layer and longer resin tags and consequently improve the adhesive/dentin interface quality.

5. A Mechanistic study of Plasma Treatment Effects on Demineralized Dentin Surfaces for Improved Adhesive/Dentin Interface Bonding.
PMID:日期:2014-07-01Our previous work has shown that non-thermal plasma treatment of demineralized dentin significantly (p<0.05) improved adhesive/dentin bonding strength for dental composite restoration as compared with the untreated controls. This study is to achieve mechanistic understanding of the plasma treatment effects on dentin surface through investigating the plasma treated dentin surfaces and their interaction with adhesive monomer, 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The plasma treated dentin surfaces from human third molars were evaluated by water contact angle measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that plasma-treated dentin surface with subsequent HEMA immersion () had much lower water contact angle compared with only plasma-treated ( or only HEMA immersed dentin surfaces. With prolong water droplet deposition time, water droplets spread out completely on the dentin surfaces. SEM images of dentin surfaces verified that dentin tubules were opened-up and filled with HEMA monomers. Extracted type I collagen fibrils, which was used as simulation of the exposed dentinal collagen fibrils after acid etching step, were plasma treated and analyzed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and circular dichroism (CD) spectra. FT-IR spectra of the collage fibrils showed broadened amide I peak at 1660 cm and amide II at 1550 cm, which indicate secondary structure changes of the collagen fibrils. CD spectra indicated that 67.4% collagen helix structures were denatured after plasma treatment. These experimental results demonstrate that non-thermal argon plasma treatment was very effective in loosing collagen structure and enhancing adhesive monomer penetration, which are beneficial to thicker hybrid layer and longer resin tag formation, and consequently enhance adhesive/dentin interface bonding.

6. Plasma in dentistry.
PMID:日期:2014-05-10This review describes the contemporary aspects of plasma application in dentistry. Previous studies on plasma applications were classified into two categories, surface treatment and direct applications, and were reviewed, respectively according to the approach. The current review discussed modification of dental implant surface, enhancing of adhesive qualities, enhancing of polymerization, surface coating and plasma cleaning under the topics of surface treatment. Microbicidal activities, decontamination, root canal disinfection and tooth bleaching were reviewed as direct applications with other miscellaneous ones. Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma was of particular focus since it is gaining considerable attention due to the possibility for its use in living tissues. Future perspectives have also been discussed briefly. Although it is still not popular among dentists, plasma has shown promises in several areas of dentistry and is now opening a new era of plasma dentistry.
