1. Selfish and prosocial individuals both distort their actions' impact, but selfish distortions can be more contagious.
1. 自私和亲社会的个体都会扭曲其行为的影响,但自私的扭曲更具传染性PMID:日期:2026-10-01People often act without knowing exactly how their actions impact others. Here, across nine preregistered online experiments (N = 8,769 adults, predominantly US residents), we tested whether people exploit this ambiguity to make themselves look good. On average, selfish individuals inflated the social benefit of their choice while downplaying that of the alternative, reporting the two options as more similar than prosocial individuals did (experiment 1a: b = 0.24, 95% confidence interval 0.14-0.34). Prosocial individuals portrayed their choice as comparatively more socially beneficial; they also inflated their implied relative sacrifice, although less consistently. We observed distortions even before people made a choice and when choices were forced, consistent with distortions reflecting social preferences rather than mere justification. While people differed in whether and how they distorted, distortions favouring selfishness showed evidence of contagion: others adopted them and became more selfish (experiment 6, selfish-serving versus no-distortion: b = 0.49, 95% confidence interval 0.10-0.88). These findings offer a psychological foundation for why polarized positions about the social impact of one's actions may emerge. When social consequences are open to interpretation, people may predictably form divergent interpretations.

2. Intrinsic rewards guide visual resource allocation via reinforcement learning.
2. 内在奖励通过强化学习引导视觉资源的分配PMID:日期:2026-10-01Humans and other animals prioritize visual processing of stimuli that signal rewards. While previous research has focused on tangible incentives (for example, money or food), the effects of intrinsic incentives-such as perceived competence-are less well understood. Here, across a series of visual estimation experiments, we manipulated observers' subjective sense of confidence in their judgements using either deceptive trial-by-trial feedback or real discrepancies in stimulus reliability. We found that observers prioritized encoding of stimuli associated with lower uncertainty or error, benefiting performance for stimuli already estimated accurately, while further impairing performance for those estimated poorly. These reward-driven biases, while potentially adaptive, impaired overall accuracy in the present tasks by causing resource allocation to deviate from the error-minimizing strategy. To account for these findings, we supplemented a normalization model of neural resource allocation with a simple reinforcement learning rule. Intrinsic and external rewards cumulatively shaped the values assigned to different stimuli by the model, and the resulting discrepancies biased resource allocation and thereby estimation error, quantitatively matching the data. These findings reveal how intrinsic reward signals can shape resource allocation in ways that are both adaptive and counterproductive, offering a computational basis for the motivational biases underlying cognitive performance.

5. Genome-wide analysis of social behaviour across social domains, reporters and developmental stages: a meta-regression approach.
5. 跨社会领域、报告者和发育阶段的社会行为全基因组分析:一种元回归方法PMID:日期:2026-09-21Social behaviour is a heritable trait linked to well-being and mental health, yet it varies across social context, including social domains, informants and development, which may shape its underlying genomic architecture. Here, we conducted a genome-wide meta-regression meta-analysis of social behaviour from infancy to early adulthood, studying ~500,000 repeated measures in European-ancestry cohorts (N = 73,321). We modelled heterogeneity in single-variant associations across social domains (low prosocial behaviour and peer/social difficulties), multiple informants (parents, teachers and self-reports) and ages (2-29 years), identifying 6 associated loci, including variation within CADM2 (P = 2.51 × 10). Single nucleotide polymorphism-based heritability ranged from 2% to 7%, and the genetic architecture comprised 4 factors reflecting differences in either social domains or informants. Polygenic scores (N = 16,305) accurately predicted contextual variation in independent cohorts, with some cross-ancestry transferability. Context-specific patterns of genetic correlations, particularly when estimating the developmental onset of associations, offer opportunities to disentangle shared trajectories linking social behaviour with later-life and mental health outcomes.

7. Impacts of PM2.5 air pollution on high-skilled worker productivity in China.
PMID:日期:2026-09-21The short-term impact of air pollution on labour productivity has mainly been studied in the context of physically demanding occupations. Here we examined the causal impact of air pollution on the academic publications of individual scholars in China. Using an instrumental variable design and combining air quality data with a bibliographic dataset of publications, we found that an increase of 1 μg m in the annual concentration of PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 μm in diameter) causes a decline of 0.23% (P < 0.01; 95% confidence interval, -0.0028 to -0.0017) in publications. The mean PM2.5 concentration was 45.91 over the study period. A 1% increase in PM2.5 concentration results in a reduction of approximately 1,053 publications nationwide. This effect was more pronounced during years of heavy pollution, especially among highly productive and younger scholars. Further analyses showed that higher pollution levels reduced academic working hours, increased hospital visits and hindered scholarly collaborations.

9. The future of large-scale experiments and their challenges in the digital era.
9. 数字时代大规模实验的未来及其面临的挑战PMID:日期:2026-09-17Large-scale randomized experiments involving millions of observations have transformed social science across academic and applied domains. These methods are now widely used in fields ranging from economics and political science to public health, education and digital product development. Drawing on the experience of industry practitioners and academic collaborators, this Perspective outlines six areas where the expanding scale and scope of experimental studies have introduced new challenges. We describe open problems related to organizational incentives and experimental governance; privacy, fairness and ethics; long-term impact estimation; time-adaptive experimental studies; heterogeneous treatment effects; and generative artificial intelligence. For each area, we summarize recent methodological advances, highlight ongoing limitations and suggest directions for future work. Our goal is to surface practical challenges that merit greater attention from the research community and to encourage sustained collaboration between academics and practitioners in shaping the future of experimental studies.

10. A research agenda for making evidence useful, usable and used in policymaking.
10. 一项旨在使证据在政策制定中具有实用性、可用性和得到应用的研究议程PMID:日期:2026-09-17Despite growing investments in evidence-based policymaking, a substantial gap remains between the production of policy-relevant research and the use of evidence to impact policy. This Perspective argues that overcoming this production-adoption gap requires reconceptualizing evidence adoption as a series of behavioural and organizational hurdles that determine whether evidence is useful, usable and, ultimately, used. Drawing on a large interdisciplinary literature, we develop a unified framework and highlight key gaps in our understanding of each of these critical stages for bringing evidence to scale. We conclude by outlining a research agenda for advancing our understanding of why a production-adoption gap persists and knowledge of what works to increase evidence adoption-which, together, are essential for ensuring that the evidence-based policymaking movement meets its promise of improving societal outcomes.
