1. Are consumers warned of the risks? An audit of voluntary health-related information on alcohol labels in Australia.
2026-10-30This study aimed to identify the types, prevalence and location of voluntary health-related warnings and responsible consumption messages on alcohol labels in Australia. Images of 6,037 unique alcohol products were captured from three major Australian retailers in 2024. Each product was coded for the type and location of voluntary health-related warnings and responsible consumption messages. Descriptive analyses were conducted overall, by product type, origin and label location. Prevalence of voluntary warning labels was low (25%). Warnings almost exclusively advised particular groups not to drink rather than providing information about specific harms caused by alcohol (e.g. cancer). Responsible consumption messages were found on 65% of all products. Most warnings (74%) and messages (75%) appeared on the back of product packaging. In Australia, while alcohol products must display a pregnancy warning label, companies do not appear to be using product labels to inform consumers about the other serious health harms of alcohol use. Rather, many products display messages promoting responsible consumption that may act to confuse individuals about alcohol-related harm. To help consumers make informed choices, policymakers should seek to implement additional mandatory health warning labels while restricting the use of misleading messages around "responsible" alcohol consumption.

2. Embedding smoking cessation into lung cancer screening: Priorities of national expert stakeholders in Australia using a modified nominal group technique.
2026-09-26Embedding smoking cessation interventions into organised lung cancer screening programs can reduce smoking-related morbidity and mortality. This study sought to prioritise smoking cessation strategies for implementation into the Australian National Lung Cancer Screening Program. We convened a national workshop of expert stakeholders to identify smoking cessation strategies that could be embedded into the proposed screening and assessment pathway. Using a modified nominal group technique, activities explored workforce, resourcing, equity, policy and research considerations to prioritise strategies and achieve consensus. Practical recommendations were devised from the priorities and mapped against a time-to-implementation matrix. Thirty-eight participants identified 19 strategies; 12 were prioritised including: four "delivery" priorities; three "equity"; two "policy"; two "research" priorities; one priority was across delivery and policy, and one across delivery and research. Priority-based recommendations ranged from being easily implementable with appropriate community engagement to requiring systems-level change achievable only with long-term policy change. The expert-identified priorities and recommendations can directly inform improvements to embed smoking cessation interventions into the National Lung Cancer Screening Program. Priorities and recommendations to embed smoking cessation interventions are ready for translation into the National Lung Cancer Screening Program and may result in improved participant outcomes.

4. Interest holder-driven research priorities in sexual and reproductive health for migrant and refugee adolescents and young adults in Australia.
PMID:日期:2026-09-01To identify and prioritise sexual and reproductive health research priorities for migrant and refugee adolescents and young adults in Australia using a priority setting partnership approach. A James Lind Alliance priority setting partnership was conducted with 92 interest holders: 31 youth from migrant and refugee backgrounds and 61 professionals (healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers and community leaders), recruited online and in-person. The priority setting partnership process included a rapid evidence scan, an online uncertainty survey, evidence verification, interim prioritisation and a final consensus workshop. Eighty-three research uncertainties yielded 11 final priorities across four sexual and reproductive health domains: sexual and reproductive health literacy, sexual violence prevention, accessible services and maternal health. A striking divergence emerged between youth and professional priorities only 3 achieved combined high-priority consensus. Youth prioritised a broader range of topics, including abortion access (rated high by youth but low by professionals), while professionals prioritised fewer areas. Two priorities achieved consensus: community-based maternal health support and barriers to reporting gender-based violence. This is the first priority setting partnership to identify sexual and reproductive health research priorities for migrant and refugee youth in Australia and to uniquely highlight substantial misalignment between youth and professional priorities. These identified priorities provide a foundation for targeted research, culturally responsive policy and more equitable sexual and reproductive health service provision for migrant and refugee adolescents and young adults.

5. What happened to Australia's falls prevention policy? A retrospective policy analysis and qualitative interviews of policy makers and key stakeholders to inform future policy development.
PMID:日期:2026-08-31To examine how Australian policymakers and stakeholders perceived the development, strengths, weaknesses and long-term implementation challenges of the Australian National Falls Prevention Policy 2005, and to identify opportunities to inform a renewed national approach. Qualitative retrospective policy analysis using semi-structured interviews with 28 participants from all national and state/territory public health agencies and stakeholders (Non-government organisations, academia, consumer representatives). Data were analysed qualitatively using the Framework Method. Participants valued the policy's vision and economic rationale but described it as outdated and constrained by limited leadership, resourcing, accountability and national coordination. Implementation was perceived to be variable across jurisdictions, with limited community involvement and inadequate consumer engagement. Policy stagnation, reactive system responses, an under-resourced workforce and lack of evaluation contributed to limited impact. Reflections across jurisdictions indicate a continuing need for a contemporary, coherent, systems-focused national falls prevention policy supported by strong governance and accountability. Policy renewal should be adequately resourced; integrate all government levels and relevant health and non-health sectors; and embed meaningful participation of older adults. A strengthened national policy is needed to respond to the growing health, societal and economic burden of falls in older Australians.

6. Associations between maternal nutrition among women with hyperglycaemia in pregnancy and childhood anthropometry: The PANDORA cohort.
2026-08-27The aim of this study was to describe the associations of nutrition during pregnancy with childhood anthropometry among First Nations and non-First Nations women with hyperglycaemia in pregnancy. 224 women (58% First Nations women) with hyperglycaemia in pregnancy (168 gestational diabetes, 56 pre-existing type 2 diabetes) were administered food-frequency questionnaires during the third trimester. Childhood anthropometry body mass index, waist and arm circumferences and skinfold thickness) was measured at median (range) follow-up of 2.7 (1.5-5.0) years of age. Multivariable linear regression assessed associations of maternal nutrition with children's anthropometry after adjusting for age, sex, diabetes type, maternal body mass index, ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, birthweight, and breastfeeding. On multivariable regression, greater maternal frequency of fast-food (two or more times a week vs. weekly or less) was associated with higher body mass index (ß-coefficient 0.6 kg/m, p=0.03), waist circumference (ß-coefficient 2.2 cm, p<0.01), arm circumference (ß-coefficient 0.7 cm, p<0.01) and sum of skinfolds (ß-coefficient 4.0 mm, p<0.01) in children. There were no associations between consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit or vegetable intake and outcomes. Addressing factors that support women and their families to maintain healthy diets is likely essential for improving childhood anthropometric outcomes. System-level changes focusing on food environments are essential to shift dietary patterns during pregnancy.

9. Access to long-acting reversible contraception: A systematic review to improve competencies in primary care settings.
[英文摘要] The aim of this study was to identify and synthesise published literature on barriers and facilitators to equitable access to long-acting reversible contraception in New Zealand, with a particular focus on wāhine Māori. A systematic review utilising the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 tool was conducted on peer-reviewed journal articles and grey literature to identify barriers and facilitators to equitable access to long-acting reversible contraception. Thematic analysis was utilised to present and synthesise the results. Fifteen records were included in the study, from which five key themes emerged: (i) health literacy, (ii) access to care, (iii) clinical experience, (iv) cultural safety and (v) data. Each theme addressed concerns regarding workforce capacity and training gaps, service accessibility, inadequate data and accountability mechanisms and inconsistent funding structures. The findings highlight structural inequities that disproportionately affect wāhine Māori (Māori women). Wāhine Māori are less likely to have their contraceptive needs met, demonstrating the importance of culturally safe, high-quality care. Strengthening access to professional development for the primary care sexual health workforce is essential to addressing these disparities. The findings highlight the need to improve access, enhance the quality of care and reduce sexual and reproductive health inequities.

10. Measuring barriers to home bowel cancer screening in rural Australia: Development and validation of a survey instrument.
[英文摘要] This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate an adapted version of the Barriers to Home Bowel Cancer screening Scale relevant to rural communities. A combined scale assessing general and "rural-specific" barriers to bowel screening was developed and presented via a cross-sectional online survey to 526 screening-eligible Australians (78% rural). Participants rated the extent to which each barrier would deter them from participating in at-home bowel cancer screening. Exploratory factor analysis identified latent screening barriers among rural participants (n=416), and a multi-group confirmatory factor analysis examined the equivalence of the identified factor structure across rural and non-rural participants. Six key barrier types emerged: (i) travel and access, (ii) concerns about the postal service, (iii) practical difficulties, (iv) avoidance, (v) limited time and resources and (vi) privacy of health information. There were no significant differences in barrier endorsement between rural and non-rural areas. The adapted scale is suitable for use in populations irrespective of geographical location. Interventions targeting rural and non-rural participants should aim to address forgetting and procrastination and coping self-efficacy and mitigate fear-based avoidance.
