1. What We Talk About When We Talk About Empathy: Toward a Common Lexicon of Empathy-Related Constructs.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-25Almost since the term "empathy" was coined, there has been scholarly disagreement about its meaning. Today it can best be viewed as an umbrella term encompassing a host of more specific constructs, almost all of which are regularly referred to as "empathy" in some form or fashion. Promiscuous use of this global label to denote very different constructs has impaired communication among and between scholars, practitioners, and the general public. A team of 15 empathy scholars assessed this issue and created a lexicon for these specific lower-order constructs. In this article we report the result of this effort. The lower-order constructs making up this lexicon are , , , /, , , , , , , and . We recommend that this more specific language be used more frequently and that the umbrella term "empathy" be used more sparingly.

2. The Developing Aesthetic Brain and Its Social Origins.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-24Neuroaesthetics has mapped the mature brain networks underlying aesthetic experience but lacks a developmental mechanism explaining how these networks become tuned to produce culturally specific preferences. The developmental-neuroaesthetics framework developed here centers on a two-system model: biological perceptual primitives (System A) and socially gated cultural tuning (System B). Cultural aesthetics are acquired through social gating during infancy, via mechanisms analogous to language acquisition. This process leverages infant-directed pedagogical signals and shared experience to flag culturally specific stimuli for affective learning. Neuroimaging evidence demonstrates that the infant medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) plays a specialized role in social perception from early in life, serving as the ontogenetic foundation for the adult mPFC's aesthetic-valuation system. Interbrain synchrony during adult-infant interactions may provide a candidate mechanism through which shared experiences support aesthetic-value learning. The default mode network, of which the mPFC is a core component, is itself shaped by early social interaction, linking social experience directly to the neural substrate of aesthetic valuation. This framework reconciles cultural diversity with biological universals, generating testable predictions linking early social-neural responsivity to later cultural-aesthetic conformity.

3. The Responsibility-Power-Justice Nexus: A Framework for Reorienting Behavioral Science Toward Power and Justice.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-24Behavioral science has achieved remarkable policy influence, yet the problems it addresses, such as climate change, health inequality, and financial precarity, have worsened. We argue this is no coincidence. The field suffers from systematic power-blindness: it treats individuals as abstract decision makers while bracketing the structural forces that shape their behavioral possibilities. This article develops the responsibility-power-justice (RPJ) nexus framework as a corrective, advancing two foundational claims. First, power is not external to behavior but constitutive of it; every behavioral intervention embeds claims about who bears responsibility for problems and solutions. Second, justice is not a normative standard applied after behavioral analysis, but a causal mechanism operating within it: Tax compliance depends on perceived fairness, health behaviors reflect institutional trust, and cooperation requires beliefs about equitable burden-sharing. Across climate policy, public health, and economic governance, we demonstrate a consistent pattern: powerful actors reframe structural problems as individual failures, behavioral science supplies the intellectual tool kit, and interventions redistribute responsibility downward while leaving power structures intact. We trace this pattern to the field's roots in methodological individualism, its privileging of individual-level experiments, and its institutional entanglement with prevailing governance arrangements. We conclude by outlining what a justice-oriented behavioral science would require.

4. Misinformation as an Event-Model Problem.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-21Why does misinformation continue to influence reasoning even after it has been corrected? Dominant accounts treat this persistence as a failure of belief updating, emphasizing propositional acceptance, motivational resistance, or memory decay. We argue that this view overlooks a key constraint on comprehension: Misinformation is typically encountered within temporally unfolding narratives and integrated into event-structured mental models. Drawing on event cognition, we propose that misinformation often acquires a causal role within an event representation, supporting prediction, explanation, and inference. Corrections that merely negate false information remove a causal element without restoring model completeness, leaving incoherent representations that invite compensatory inference and the reemergence of misinformation. By contrast, our framework predicts that corrections that align with event boundaries and provide factually accurate, causally adequate replacements should be more likely to stabilize updated representations. This event-model perspective unifies continued influence effects, delayed resurgence of misinformation, and inference-based false memory. It suggests that effective interventions must not only revise beliefs but also restore coherence in narrative event models.

5. "WEIRDly Exceptional": Has Cultural Psychology Reproduced What It Sought to Critique?
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-03The WEIRD framework-Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic-introduced in 2010 by Henrich et al. drew widespread attention to psychology's overreliance on Western samples and its assumption of universal human psychology. However, in this article I argue that the framework's popularization-particularly in work explaining the origins and consequences of WEIRD psychology-has paradoxically generated a new form of exceptionalism. By designating Western populations as psychologically "peculiar," the framework inadvertently maintains the West as the central reference point against which human variation is measured. I identify three mechanisms through which this occurs. First, the WEIRD acronym itself embeds developmental assumptions: Its components connote achievements rather than neutral differences, while implicitly defining non-WEIRD populations through deficit (uneducated, undeveloped, poor, authoritarian). Second, the comparative structure positions WEIRD populations as the persistent baseline, with non-WEIRD psychologies understood through their deviation from Western patterns rather than as autonomous systems. Third, cultural-historical accounts tracing WEIRD psychology to internal European developments risk obscuring how extraction and violence constituted the material conditions for Western institutional dominance. I propose that genuinely decentering Western psychology requires moving beyond binary comparative frameworks, developing research programs that engage diverse cultural psychologies on their own terms and transforming institutional structures that implicitly favor Western theoretical frameworks as unmarked universals.

6. Mentoring Trainees With Lived Experience of Psychopathology: A Strengths-Based, Cultural-Humility Framework for Psychological Scientists.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-03Mental-health difficulties are prevalent among psychologists, yet professionals in the field are often discouraged from disclosing their lived experience with psychopathology because of persistent stigma. Lived experience with psychopathology has historically been treated as a deficit within the profession. However, emerging research and perspectives are beginning to challenge this status quo by highlighting that lived experience can be an asset in psychological science and practice. Despite this shift, there remains little guidance on how to navigate this topic in mentor-mentee relationships. We outline a framework for strengths-based mentorship that is based on six pillars: tenets of strengths-based mentorship, foundational and functional mentorship competencies, mental-health literacy, feminist principles, cultural humility, and ethical considerations. This framework can help improve mentor-mentee relationships, reduce stigma, and ultimately improve the professional development of mentees with lived experience. We apply this principle-driven framework to common professional scenarios: recruiting applicants, evaluating personal statements, and navigating situations in which a mentee is distressed, requesting accommodations, or interested in leveraging their lived experiences in their work. By offering this framework, we aim to facilitate dialogue and provide actionable guidance for mentors seeking to support trainees with psychopathology.

7. Aging as a Continuation of Development: A Hypothesis and Framework.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-03Prevailing theories of cognitive aging depict late life as a period of compensatory decline-an effort to preserve performance despite progressive neural deterioration. We propose instead that aging represents a continuation of development: a genetically conserved, adaptive reorganization of memory systems that parallels the brain's earlier-life transitions. Drawing on convergent molecular, network, behavioral, and comparative evidence, we argue that the well-documented decline in episodic-memory precision reflects a deliberate recalibration of plasticity from hippocampal to cortical circuits, favoring semantic integration and schematic stability over rapid encoding of novel details. This shift, we suggest, is not a workaround for loss but an evolved optimization suited to the cognitive ecology of late life, when accumulated knowledge, social insight, and intergenerational teaching become primary adaptive functions. The resulting supports narrative coherence, emotional regulation, and wisdom, distinguishing normal aging from pathological derailments such as Alzheimer's disease. We outline testable predictions across longitudinal, neuroimaging, and computational domains and reinterpret constructs like cognitive reserve as expressions of this developmental reallocation. By reframing aging as purposeful maturation rather than compensation, the adaptive-aging hypothesis positions late-life cognition as a distinct, evolutionarily honed phase of human development.

8. Ten Concerns About Volitional Personality-Change Interventions-and How to Address Them.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-03Many people want to change their personality in some way, and personality traits have been found to predict various important aspects of life, including well-being, health, relationship quality, and work success. As a result, volitional personality interventions designed to elicit personality-trait change in desired directions have recently gained momentum in research and public discourse. Although the initial evidence on the effectiveness of these interventions is promising, concerns regarding their benefits, risks, and societal implications remain underexplored. In this review, we discuss 10 concerns regarding methodological, ethical, and practical limitations of volitional personality-change interventions. Drawing on research across different areas of psychology, we provide a balanced discussion of each concern and outline directions for future research and practical applications of these interventions. Volitional personality-change interventions have the potential to improve people's lives and increase satisfaction with the self. However, realizing this potential requires sustained research effort, thoughtful study design, and careful implementation of these interventions to maximize benefits and mitigate concerns.

9. A Material-Relational Ontology of Data: Addressing Ethical Challenges in Psychological Research in a Data-Driven Era.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-03The shift to a society organized around digital data has come with significant-although sometimes still underappreciated-implications for psychological research. In part, this is owed to the narrowness of discussions about data ethics in the discipline, although also to the ontological assumptions about data that implicitly shape researchers' discussions and practices. The prevailing representationalist ontology of data-understanding data to be a passive abstraction that represents some preexisting phenomenon-draws researchers' attention to methodological issues, such as data quality, while simultaneously turning attention away from different kinds of issues. Informed by feminist technoscience and feminist-new-materialist thinkers, we argue for an alternative ontology of data that helps understand it as being material-relational-as something that is active and entangles researchers in (often invisible) relations that have real, material consequences. These ontological commitments can draw attention to those relations and their implications and help researchers consider what ethical issues are at stake, thus creating the conditions to advocate for new kinds of responsible research practices. We put this ontology to work by looking at two issues: the labor problems from data collection on MTurk and the environmental impacts of data storage. We conclude by offering practical recommendations for more responsible data practices in psychology.

10. Why It Is (Probably) Not Your Fault if Your Studies Do Not Work Out.
PMID:期刊:日期:2026-09-01Early career researchers, because of their role in data collection and analysis, are often first to experience the emotional impact of null or nonreplicable results. In this article, we lift the veil on null results by presenting their causes (i.e., low prior probability of the hypothesis, theoretical ambiguity) and consequences and offer early career researchers-especially researchers at less wealthy institutions-tools to deal with null results.
