1. Renal Pathology Images Segmentation Based on Improved Cuckoo Search with Diffusion Mechanism and Adaptive Beta-Hill Climbing.
PMID:日期:2023-05-03Lupus Nephritis (LN) is a significant risk factor for morbidity and mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus, and nephropathology is still the gold standard for diagnosing LN. To assist pathologists in evaluating histopathological images of LN, a 2D Rényi entropy multi-threshold image segmentation method is proposed in this research to apply to LN images. This method is based on an improved Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm that introduces a Diffusion Mechanism (DM) and an Adaptive β-Hill Climbing (AβHC) strategy called the DMCS algorithm. The DMCS algorithm is tested on 30 benchmark functions of the IEEE CEC2017 dataset. In addition, the DMCS-based multi-threshold image segmentation method is also used to segment renal pathological images. Experimental results show that adding these two strategies improves the DMCS algorithm's ability to find the optimal solution. According to the three image quality evaluation metrics: PSNR, FSIM, and SSIM, the proposed image segmentation method performs well in image segmentation experiments. Our research shows that the DMCS algorithm is a helpful image segmentation method for renal pathological images.

2. Coronavirus Mask Protection Algorithm: A New Bio-inspired Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications.
PMID:日期:2023-03-01Nowadays, meta-heuristic algorithms are attracting widespread interest in solving high-dimensional nonlinear optimization problems. In this paper, a COVID-19 prevention-inspired bionic optimization algorithm, named Coronavirus Mask Protection Algorithm (CMPA), is proposed based on the virus transmission of COVID-19. The main inspiration for the CMPA originated from human self-protection behavior against COVID-19. In CMPA, the process of infection and immunity consists of three phases, including the infection stage, diffusion stage, and immune stage. Notably, wearing masks correctly and safe social distancing are two essential factors for humans to protect themselves, which are similar to the exploration and exploitation in optimization algorithms. This study simulates the self-protection behavior mathematically and offers an optimization algorithm. The performance of the proposed CMPA is evaluated and compared to other state-of-the-art metaheuristic optimizers using benchmark functions, CEC2020 suite problems, and three truss design problems. The statistical results demonstrate that the CMPA is more competitive among these state-of-the-art algorithms. Further, the CMPA is performed to identify the parameters of the main girder of a gantry crane. Results show that the mass and deflection of the main girder can be improved by 16.44% and 7.49%, respectively.

3. Improved Reptile Search Algorithm by Salp Swarm Algorithm for Medical Image Segmentation.
PMID:日期:2023-02-07This study proposes a novel nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimizer based on the Reptile Search Algorithm combed with Salp Swarm Algorithm for image segmentation using gray-scale multi-level thresholding, called RSA-SSA. The proposed method introduces a better search space to find the optimal solution at each iteration. However, we proposed RSA-SSA to avoid the searching problem in the same area and determine the optimal multi-level thresholds. The obtained solutions by the proposed method are represented using the image histogram. The proposed RSA-SSA employed Otsu's variance class function to get the best threshold values at each level. The performance measure for the proposed method is valid by detecting fitness function, structural similarity index, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and Friedman ranking test. Several benchmark images of COVID-19 validate the performance of the proposed RSA-SSA. The results showed that the proposed RSA-SSA outperformed other metaheuristics optimization algorithms published in the literature.

4. Multi-verse Optimizer with Rosenbrock and Diffusion Mechanisms for Multilevel Threshold Image Segmentation from COVID-19 Chest X-Ray Images.
PMID:日期:2023-01-04Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the most severe epidemic that is prevalent all over the world. How quickly and accurately identifying COVID-19 is of great significance to controlling the spread speed of the epidemic. Moreover, it is essential to accurately and rapidly identify COVID-19 lesions by analyzing Chest X-ray images. As we all know, image segmentation is a critical stage in image processing and analysis. To achieve better image segmentation results, this paper proposes to improve the multi-verse optimizer algorithm using the Rosenbrock method and diffusion mechanism named RDMVO. Then utilizes RDMVO to calculate the maximum Kapur's entropy for multilevel threshold image segmentation. This image segmentation scheme is called RDMVO-MIS. We ran two sets of experiments to test the performance of RDMVO and RDMVO-MIS. First, RDMVO was compared with other excellent peers on IEEE CEC2017 to test the performance of RDMVO on benchmark functions. Second, the image segmentation experiment was carried out using RDMVO-MIS, and some meta-heuristic algorithms were selected as comparisons. The test image dataset includes Berkeley images and COVID-19 Chest X-ray images. The experimental results verify that RDMVO is highly competitive in benchmark functions and image segmentation experiments compared with other meta-heuristic algorithms.

5. Improved Dwarf Mongoose Optimization for Constrained Engineering Design Problems.
PMID:日期:2022-12-13This paper proposes a modified version of the Dwarf Mongoose Optimization Algorithm (IDMO) for constrained engineering design problems. This optimization technique modifies the base algorithm (DMO) in three simple but effective ways. First, the alpha selection in IDMO differs from the DMO, where evaluating the probability value of each fitness is just a computational overhead and contributes nothing to the quality of the alpha or other group members. The fittest dwarf mongoose is selected as the alpha, and a new operator ω is introduced, which controls the alpha movement, thereby enhancing the exploration ability and exploitability of the IDMO. Second, the scout group movements are modified by randomization to introduce diversity in the search process and explore unvisited areas. Finally, the babysitter's exchange criterium is modified such that once the criterium is met, the babysitters that are exchanged interact with the dwarf mongoose exchanging them to gain information about food sources and sleeping mounds, which could result in better-fitted mongooses instead of initializing them afresh as done in DMO, then the counter is reset to zero. The proposed IDMO was used to solve the classical and CEC 2020 benchmark functions and 12 continuous/discrete engineering optimization problems. The performance of the IDMO, using different performance metrics and statistical analysis, is compared with the DMO and eight other existing algorithms. In most cases, the results show that solutions achieved by the IDMO are better than those obtained by the existing algorithms.

6. Crisscross Harris Hawks Optimizer for Global Tasks and Feature Selection.
PMID:日期:2022-11-30Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) is a recent well-established optimizer based on the hunting characteristics of Harris hawks, which shows excellent efficiency in solving a variety of optimization issues. However, it undergoes weak global search capability because of the levy distribution in its optimization process. In this paper, a variant of HHO is proposed using Crisscross Optimization Algorithm (CSO) to compensate for the shortcomings of original HHO. The novel developed optimizer called Crisscross Harris Hawks Optimizer (CCHHO), which can effectively achieve high-quality solutions with accelerated convergence on a variety of optimization tasks. In the proposed algorithm, the vertical crossover strategy of CSO is used for adjusting the exploitative ability adaptively to alleviate the local optimum; the horizontal crossover strategy of CSO is considered as an operator for boosting explorative trend; and the competitive operator is adopted to accelerate the convergence rate. The effectiveness of the proposed optimizer is evaluated using 4 kinds of benchmark functions, 3 constrained engineering optimization issues and feature selection problems on 13 datasets from the UCI repository. Comparing with nine conventional intelligence algorithms and 9 state-of-the-art algorithms, the statistical results reveal that the proposed CCHHO is significantly more effective than HHO, CSO, CCNMHHO and other competitors, and its advantage is not influenced by the increase of problems' dimensions. Additionally, experimental results also illustrate that the proposed CCHHO outperforms some existing optimizers in working out engineering design optimization; for feature selection problems, it is superior to other feature selection methods including CCNMHHO in terms of fitness, error rate and length of selected features. 7. Identification of Pulmonary Hypertension Animal Models Using a New Evolutionary Machine Learning Framework Based on Blood Routine Indicators.
PMID:日期:2022-11-28Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a global health problem that affects about 1% of the global population. Animal models of PH play a vital role in unraveling the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease. The present study proposes a Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM) model based on an improved Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) for predicting PH mouse models. The experimental results showed that the selected blood indicators, including Haemoglobin (HGB), Hematocrit (HCT), Mean, Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet distribution width (PDW), and Platelet-Large Cell Ratio (P-LCR), were essential for identifying PH mouse models using the feature selection method proposed in this paper. Remarkably, the method achieved 100.0% accuracy and 100.0% specificity in classification, demonstrating that our method has great potential to be used for evaluating and identifying mouse PH models.

8. Boosting Whale Optimizer with Quasi-Oppositional Learning and Gaussian Barebone for Feature Selection and COVID-19 Image Segmentation.
PMID:日期:2022-11-28Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) tends to fall into the local optimum and fails to converge quickly in solving complex problems. To address the shortcomings, an improved WOA (QGBWOA) is proposed in this work. First, quasi-opposition-based learning is introduced to enhance the ability of WOA to search for optimal solutions. Second, a Gaussian barebone mechanism is embedded to promote diversity and expand the scope of the solution space in WOA. To verify the advantages of QGBWOA, comparison experiments between QGBWOA and its comparison peers were carried out on CEC 2014 with dimensions 10, 30, 50, and 100 and on CEC 2020 test with dimension 30. Furthermore, the performance results were tested using Wilcoxon signed-rank (WS), Friedman test, and post hoc statistical tests for statistical analysis. Convergence accuracy and speed are remarkably improved, as shown by experimental results. Finally, feature selection and multi-threshold image segmentation applications are demonstrated to validate the ability of QGBWOA to solve complex real-world problems. QGBWOA proves its superiority over compared algorithms in feature selection and multi-threshold image segmentation by performing several evaluation metrics. 9. A Novel Method Based on Nonlinear Binary Grasshopper Whale Optimization Algorithm for Feature Selection.
PMID:日期:2022-09-07Feature Selection (FS) is considered as an important preprocessing step in data mining and is used to remove redundant or unrelated features from high-dimensional data. Most optimization algorithms for FS problems are not balanced in search. A hybrid algorithm called nonlinear binary grasshopper whale optimization algorithm (NL-BGWOA) is proposed to solve the problem in this paper. In the proposed method, a new position updating strategy combining the position changes of whales and grasshoppers population is expressed, which optimizes the diversity of searching in the target domain. Ten distinct high-dimensional UCI datasets, the multi-modal Parkinson's speech datasets, and the COVID-19 symptom dataset are used to validate the proposed method. It has been demonstrated that the proposed NL-BGWOA performs well across most of high-dimensional datasets, which shows a high accuracy rate of up to 0.9895. Furthermore, the experimental results on the medical datasets also demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method in actual FS problem, including accuracy, size of feature subsets, and fitness with best values of 0.913, 5.7, and 0.0873, respectively. The results reveal that the proposed NL-BGWOA has comprehensive superiority in solving the FS problem of high-dimensional data.

10. Design and Implementation of a Rehabilitation Upper-limb Exoskeleton Robot Controlled by Cognitive and Physical Interfaces.
PMID:日期:2022-06-21This paper presents an upper limb exoskeleton that allows cognitive (through electromyography signals) and physical user interaction (through load cells sensors) for passive and active exercises that can activate neuroplasticity in the rehabilitation process of people who suffer from a neurological injury. For the exoskeleton to be easily accepted by patients who suffer from a neurological injury, we used the ISO9241-210:2010 as a methodology design process. As the first steps of the design process, design requirements were collected from previous usability tests and literature. Then, as a second step, a technological solution is proposed, and as a third step, the system was evaluated through performance and user testing. As part of the technological solution and to allow patient participation during the rehabilitation process, we have proposed a hybrid admittance control whose input is load cell or electromyography signals. The hybrid admittance control is intended for active therapy exercises, is easily implemented, and does not need musculoskeletal modeling to work. Furthermore, electromyography signals classification models and features were evaluated to identify the best settings for the cognitive human-robot interaction.
