1. Agroecological drivers of aflatoxin contamination in maize-based systems: a review.
PMID:日期:2026-09-18Aflatoxin contamination of maize remains a global food safety and public health challenge, particularly because it is a dietary staple food and feed ingredient produced across diverse agroecological zones. Although numerous mitigation strategies have been developed, contamination levels remain variable. This reflects complex interactions among climate, soil properties, crop management practices, plant physiological stress and rhizosphere microbial communities. This review synthesizes evidence on key agroecological drivers of aflatoxin contamination in maize, highlighting climate variability, soil properties, crop and nutrient management, cropping systems, and rhizosphere microbial communities as primary determinants. We examine how these factors influence population dynamics, microbial interactions and aflatoxin biosynthesis across contrasting production environments. Evidence synthesized in this review indicates that inconsistent outcomes of existing management including biological control strategies largely arise from insufficient consideration of soil-plant-microbe interactions and spatial heterogeneity. We identify climatic stress, soil properties and crop management strategies as the dominant determinants of aflatoxin risk, acting through biological mediators such as plant physiological status, rhizosphere microbial communities and fungal population. The review argues that effective and scalable aflatoxin mitigation requires integrated, context-specific and systems-based approaches. We conclude that incorporating agroecological heterogeneity into research design, predictive models and management frameworks is essential for improving risk prediction and developing aflatoxin control strategies in maize-based cropping systems.

2. From rhizome diffusion to programmable architecture: a systems framework for controllable spatial expansion in bamboo and other clonal plants.
PMID:日期:2026-09-18Rhizome-driven spatial expansion in bamboo and other clonal plants is governed jointly by architectural patterning, belowground bud bank demography, hormonal crosstalk, carbon allocation, environmental plasticity and genomic regulation. This integrative review synthesises those strands and then asks a question the field has not yet answered explicitly: how much of the mechanistic framework now invoked for programmable rhizome control has actually been demonstrated in a woody bamboo? Literature was retrieved from Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and CNKI and appraised along two axes - the biological provenance of each observation (woody bamboo; other rhizomatous or stoloniferous perennial; annual, herbaceous or model system) and its causal strength (perturbation-based, correlative, or conceptual). The appraisal shows that architectural description, running-versus-clumping contrasts and clonal integration are supported by causal or quantitative evidence in bamboo itself, whereas the auxin -cytokinin -strigolactone module, BRANCHED1/ repression, -mediated architectural control and the Tre6P - - growth switch are supported in bamboo correlatively or not at all, having been imported from Arabidopsis, rice, potato, poplar and Nicotiana. On that basis we propose a three-tier genome-editing framework ordered by intervention depth, and argue that in bamboo the binding constraint is delivery rather than target choice: because gregarious monocarpic flowering precludes segregation-based transgene removal, ribonucleoprotein editing of cis-regulatory elements in a transformable or background is presently the only route to a transgene-free edited plant, and vegetative containment necessarily dominates reproductive containment. We identify five quantities that the current corpus does not report, including lateral extension rate with variance, barrier breach probability as a function of embedment and inspection interval, and the minimum regenerative rhizome fragment size, and convert them into a staged, falsifiable research agenda with explicit go/no-go criteria.

3. The effect of nine-year nitrogen addition on foliar fungal diseases of plant groups in an alpine meadow.
PMID:日期:2026-09-18Foliar fungal diseases have become one of the non-negligible drivers of accelerated grassland degradation, and global change processes such as increased nitrogen (N) deposition can significantly regulate the occurrence and development of foliar fungal diseases in meadows. However, little is known about how increased nitrogen deposition affects foliar fungal diseases in alpine meadows, and there is limited understanding of the relative importance of different plant groups in the process of N enrichment affecting plant diseases. Here, based on a 9-year continuous nitrogen addition experiment (2014-2022, gradients: 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 g N m year) in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, we investigated the effects of long-term N enrichment on plant group attributes and foliar fungal diseases through a one-time field survey conducted in August 2022. We employed linear mixed-effects models and structural equation modeling to explore the relationships between foliar fungal diseases and plant community variables under N enrichment. We found that plant groups identity was the dominant factor influencing foliar fungal diseases, with Gramineae consistently exhibiting the highest disease incidence and disease index across all N addition levels. The SEM revealed that N addition did not exert a significant direct effect on disease index; rather, its effect was fully mediated by disease incidence-N addition significantly increased incidence rate, which in turn drove disease index. In addition, foliar fungal diseases tended to infect plants with greater relative coverage, especially Gramineae and Forbs, potentially because denser canopies promote pathogen spread and infection. Overall, our results suggest that plant group composition plays a dominant role in determining foliar fungal disease patterns, with Gramineae being the most affected group, and that N addition influences disease development primarily by increasing disease incidence rather than by directly exacerbating lesion severity. These findings highlight the importance of considering foliar fungal disease occurrence in response to global change and the utility of plant groups as predictors of disease risk under N enrichment.

5. {"_":"Exogenous 24-epibrassinolide enhances chilling tolerance in through coordinated physiological and transcriptomic responses.","i":["Phalaenopsis-type Dendrobium"]}
PMID:日期:2026-09-18is a commercially important tropical orchid that is highly sensitive to chilling, which can cause premature leaf senescence and abscission. We evaluated the protective effect of exogenous 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) and integrated time-resolved RNA-seq with physiological traits previously characterized in the same experimental framework. A concentration of 2.0 mg/L was selected for transcriptomic analysis based on the refined dose-response experiment. WGCNA was performed using 18 EBR-treated libraries. Global GO and KEGG outputs were retained as descriptive overviews, whereas quantitative functional inference was based on module-specific analyses with complete multiple-testing-adjusted statistics. EBR delayed leaf yellowing and abscission. Differential-expression analysis revealed time-dependent transcriptional responses during chilling and recovery. WGCNA identified trait-associated modules with contrasting temporal relationships to physiological traits: the pink module was positively associated with MDA and proline and negatively associated with chlorophyll, whereas the antiquewhite4 (AW4) module showed the opposite pattern. Pink-module enrichment emphasized central carbon and energy metabolism, lipid turnover, peroxisomal processes, autophagy, and cellular transport/homeostasis. AW4 GO enrichment was dominated by transmembrane and metabolite transport; no AW4 KEGG pathway remained significant after multiple-testing correction. These results support an association between EBR treatment and coordinated metabolic, membrane-homeostasis, and stress-response adjustments during chilling and recovery in .

6. Molecular and biophysical foundations of nano-enabled seed priming and smart nanocarriers for crop stress alleviation.
PMID:日期:2026-09-18Agricultural productivity is increasingly constrained by interacting abiotic stresses, yet translation of nano-enabled seed treatments from controlled experiments to field agriculture remains limited. Seed nanopriming can initiate physiological and molecular priming before radicle emergence, but outcomes depend strongly on nanomaterial identity, particle size and morphology, surface charge, colloidal stability, cargo chemistry, exposure regime, and crop genotype. This review critically examines mesoporous silica nanoparticles, chitosan-based systems, metal-organic frameworks, hybrid/core-shell platforms, and catalytic nanozymes, distinguishing true cargo-delivery carriers from catalytic functional nanomaterials. We integrate interfacial physics with seed-coat and cell-wall barriers, clarifying how zeta potential, surface charge density, hydrodynamic size, porosity, functionalization, and material transformation influence adhesion, uptake, release, and translocation. At the molecular level, we connect nanoparticle-surface interactions with ROS and Ca2+ signaling, membrane-potential changes, MAPK/CDPK cascades, phytohormone cross-talk, transcription-factor activation, antioxidant defenses, and stress-memory processes. We also distinguish transient physiological memory from mitotically persistent and experimentally demonstrated transgenerational inheritance, and critically examine bio-nano combinations in soil, including dissolution, redox transformation, heteroaggregation, and eco-corona formation. Particular emphasis is placed on dose- and material-dependent phytotoxicity, multi-stress cross-tolerance, regulatory status of transgene-free editing, and practical barriers involving reproducibility, cost, scalability, field stability, and environmental safety. Finally, we identify realistic research priorities, including standardized nanoformulation reporting, field-validated dose windows, multi-omics and mechanistic imaging, Nano-QSAR/graph-learning workflows, and safer-by-design criteria for precision seed treatment.

PMID:日期:2026-09-18The () gene regulates photosynthesis and is associated with drought tolerance and cold tolerance. However, no report has determined the role of in alkali tolerance. In this study, we found that responds to alkali and salt-alkali mixed stresses in alfalfa () and carried out detailed functional analysis of in the model plants and . In , the double mutant exhibited reduced tolerance to these two stress treatments compared to the wild type. Conversely, overexpression of in displayed enhanced tolerance under the same treatments. To further study the mechanism underlying response to these stresses, we employed the mutant in , a close relative of alfalfa. The mutant suffered severe damage when subjected to the two stresses. Consistent with phenotypic and physiological analyses, 1092 and 999 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified under alkali and salt-alkali mixed stress, respectively. Our results showed that plays an important role in regulating tolerance to alkali and salt-alkali mixed stress. A yeast one-hybrid assay revealed that MtGLK1 directly binds to the promoter of the -- gene.

8. {"_":"Genome-wide identification and functional characterization of transcription factors uncover their stress adaptation mechanisms in tobacco and eggplant.","i":["LBD"]}
PMID:日期:2026-09-18The Lateral Organ Boundaries Domain protein family comprises a group of plant-specific transcription factors involved in diverse developmental and stress-response processes. We identified 106 genes in tobacco ( L.) and 50 genes in eggplant ( L.), and classified them into Classes I and II. Duplication analysis identified 26 segmental and 3 tandem duplicated gene pairs, while interspecies synteny analysis revealed 17 tobacco- and 31 eggplant- syntenic pairs. Expression profiling showed broad tissue expression, with relatively high transcript abundance in roots and stems, and selected LBD proteins were localized to the nucleus. VIGS constructs targeting in tobacco and in eggplant were used for preliminary functional assessment. In tobacco, these treatments were associated with reduced expression of ABA-responsive genes, less visible injury under low-temperature stress, and increased susceptibility to bacterial wilt. In eggplant, they were associated with increased expression of ABA biosynthesis and signaling related genes, reduced visible cold injury, and enhanced bacterial wilt resistance. Expression changes in related LBD members further suggested possible functional redundancy or compensatory regulation. These findings indicate that selected genes and their associated regulatory networks participate in ABA responses, low-temperature adaptation, and pathogen defense in tobacco and eggplant, and they further underscore the potential utility of these genes as targets for improving stress tolerance in species, although additional experimental confirmation is warranted.

9. Seasonal and landform effects on plant productivity and carrying capacity at Bisha Rangeland, Saudi Arabia.
PMID:日期:2026-09-18Arid rangelands in Saudi Arabia face major management challenges due to pronounced seasonal variability and landform-related differences in vegetation productivity, necessitating science-based grazing strategies. However, the combined effects of these factors on plant biomass and livestock carrying capacity remain poorly quantified. To address this gap, this study investigated the individual and interactive effects of season and landform on vegetation productivity and livestock carrying capacity at Bisha-1 rangeland across four survey seasons (Autumn 2023, Spring 2024, Autumn 2024, and Spring 2025) and two landforms (valleys and plains). Highly significant differences were recorded among seasons in total palatable biomass ( < 0.001), which ranged from 86.64 kg DM ha in Autumn 2023 to 215.84 kg DM ha in Spring 2024, representing a 2.5-fold variation. Significant differences were also recorded between landforms ( = 0.007), with valleys exhibiting 20% higher total palatable biomass than plains. However, the season × landform interaction was non-significant ( = 0.810), indicating that seasonal patterns remained consistent across landform types. Palatable tree biomass was the dominant component, accounting for 70-80% of total palatable biomass across all season-landform combinations, whereas palatable shrub biomass made a smaller but seasonally variable contribution. Based on a standardized 90-day seasonal grazing model, livestock carrying capacity varied with season, ranging from 0.48 sheep units ha90 days in Autumn 2023 to 0.72 sheep units ha90 days in Spring 2024, representing a 1.5-fold variation, while landform effects on carrying capacity were secondary (valleys: 0.61 sheep units ha90 days; plains: 0.53 sheep units ha90 days) across the four seasons. These findings support seasonally adjusted stocking strategies, the conservation of palatable herbaceous and shrub components during periods of forage scarcity, and consideration of precipitation variability to sustain rangeland productivity in the Aseer region. However, interpretation of the estimated carrying capacity is limited by the single-site, four-campaign design and the absence of direct measurements of forage quality and animal utilization.

10. {"_":"Multi-model genome-wide association studies identify stable QTLs and candidate genes for lodging resistance in rice.","i":["indica"]}
PMID:日期:2026-09-18Lodging significantly limits rice yield and grain quality. Despite the identification of numerous QTLs and genes associated with lodging-related traits, the genetic framework for lodging resistance remains largely unclear. In this study, we evaluated 17 lodging-related traits over three consecutive years using a global collection of 370 rice accessions. From correlation analysis, eight representative traits, including plant height (PH), breaking resistance (BR), fresh weight (FW), stem length (SL), section modulus (SM), bending stress (BS), lodging index (LI), and the optimized parameter △BM, were selected for a genome-wide association study (GWAS). This study utilized 2,315,020 high-quality SNPs analyzed through the MLM, FarmCPU, and BLINK models. These models identified 10, 24, and 16 significant QTLs, respectively, with two stable QTLs, and , consistently detected across all models. Haplotype analysis and expression profiling narrowed the candidate genes within the and intervals down to seven, highlighting (encoding beta-glucosidase 8) and (encoding a hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein) as promising candidate genes that warrant further functional validation for their roles in culm mechanical properties. Collectively, our results provide a valuable set of QTLs and candidate genes for marker-assisted breeding and offer mechanistic insights into the genetic basis of lodging resistance in rice, with the caveat that the two stable QTLs lie in close proximity to previously characterized loci and require fine-mapping to establish their independence.
