1. Optimal Energy Shaping and Force Amplification Framework for Task-Agnostic, Biomimetic Ankle Exoskeletons.
1. 面向任务无关仿生踝关节外骨骼的最优能量塑形与力放大框架PMID:日期:2026-04-22Task-agnostic controllers for partial-assist lower-limb exoskeletons aim to reliably mimic biological torque while seamlessly adapting to changing movement patterns. However, current approaches relying on hidden state estimators or neural networks lack explainability and safety guarantees, while force amplification methods risk instability with an inherent trade-off between sensitivity and robustness to control inputs. Energy shaping control uses a kinematic model-based framework to provide predictable, stable assistance, though its traditional passive form limits biomimetic performance. Previous work relaxed the strict passivity requirements to improve biomimicry but reduced the stability guarantees. This paper presents an optimization-based extension of the energy-shaping control framework that combines the stability benefits of energy shaping with the intuitive biomimicry of force amplification. Our framework enables controlled trade-offs between sensitivity to changing human impedance and high performance through adjustable cost contributions of force amplification and model-based terms. We provide theoretical guarantees of closed-loop stability to an invariant set under human joint impedance control, supported by empirical validation of stability characteristics of an ankle exoskeleton under varying controller passivity constraints. A study of ten able-bodied participants using bilateral ankle exoskeletons demonstrates that the biomimetic controller reduced biological ankle torque by 19.1% across various activities of daily life.

2. Tip-Growing Robots: Design, Theory, Application.
PMID:日期:2025-09-12Growing robots apically extend through material eversion or deposition at their tip. This endows them with unique capabilities such as follow the leader navigation, long-reach, inherent compliance, and large force delivery bandwidth. Tip-growing robots can therefore conform to sensitive, intricate, and difficult-to-access environments. This review paper categorizes, compares, and critically evaluates state-of-the-art growing robots with emphasis on their designs, fabrication processes, actuation and steering mechanisms, mechanics models, controllers, and applications. Finally, the paper discusses the main challenges that the research area still faces and proposes future directions.

3. Online Adaptation Framework Enables Personalization of Exoskeleton Assistance During Locomotion in Patients Affected by Stroke.
PMID:日期:2025-08-04Robotic exoskeletons can transform mobility for individuals with lower-limb disabilities. However, their widespread adoption is limited by controller degradation caused by varying gait dynamics across different users and environments. Here, we propose an online adaptation framework that leverages real-time data streams to continuously update the user state estimator model. This approach allows the exoskeleton to learn the user-specific gait patterns, effectively customizing the model for each new user. Additionally, we demonstrate a sensor signal transformation technique that enables model transfer across different exoskeleton hardware (from a research-grade exoskeleton to a commercial device). With less than one minute of adaptation, our framework improved gait phase estimation, which directly affects assistance timing, by 40.9% for able-bodied subjects and 65.9% for stroke survivors (p<0.05), and reduced torque profile error by 32.7% compared to the baseline model (p<0.05). Furthermore, in a pilot test, we applied our adaptation framework with human-in-the-loop optimization for control tuning. In a single stroke survivor, this approach led to a 21.8% increase in walking speed and a 6.5% reduction in metabolic cost compared to walking without exoskeleton. While preliminary, these results suggest the potential for personalized exoskeleton assistance in clinical populations.

4. Safe Start Regions for Medical Steerable Needle Automation.
PMID:日期:2025-03-17Steerable needles are minimally invasive devices that enable novel medical procedures by following curved paths to avoid critical anatomical obstacles. We introduce a new start pose robustness metric for steerable needle motion plans. A steerable needle deployment typically consists of a physician manually placing a steerable needle at a precomputed start pose on the surface of tissue and handing off control to a robot, which then autonomously steers the needle through the tissue to the target. The handoff between humans and robots is critical for procedure success, as even small deviations from a planned start pose change the steerable needle's reachable workspace. Our metric is based on a novel geometric method to efficiently compute how far the physician can deviate from the planned start pose in both position and orientation such that the steerable needle can still reach the target. We evaluate our metric through simulation in liver and lung scenarios. Our evaluation shows that our metric can be applied to plans computed by different steerable needle motion planners and that it can be used to efficiently select plans with large safe start regions.

5. Ambilateral Activity Recognition and Continuous Adaptation with a Powered Knee-Ankle Prosthesis.
PMID:日期:2025-02-05For powered prosthetic legs to be viable in everyday situations, they require an activity classification system that is not only accurate but also straightforward to understand and use. However, incorporating the numerous activity modes in real-world ambulation often requires high-dimensional feature spaces and restrictions on the leg leading each transition. This article addresses these challenges by delegating sit/stand transitions and variable-incline walking to the mid-level controller, effectively reducing the classification space to four states with easily distinguishable features. We implement simple heuristic rules for both prosthetic-led and intact-led (i.e., ambilateral) transitions, using lower-limb kinematic features, ground contact and inclination, and environmental distance from an ultrasonic sensor. Two transfemoral amputee subjects using a powered knee-ankle prosthesis demonstrated an ambilateral transition accuracy of 99.2% under both self-paced and rapid-paced/fatiguing conditions, with a 100% recovery rate due to backup logic or user-cued resets. The incline estimator enabled the prosthesis to continuously adapt between level and inclined surfaces without explicit classification. These results and an outdoor multi-terrain demonstration indicate that simple and straightforward transition logic can enable powered prosthetic legs to be used reliably across a broad array of daily activities.

6. A Lightweight Powered Hip Exoskeleton With Parallel Actuation for Frontal and Sagittal Plane Assistance.
PMID:日期:2025-02Wearable robots and powered exoskeletons may improve ambulation for millions of individuals with poor mobility. Powered exoskeletons primarily assist in the sagittal plane to improve walking efficiency and speed. However, individuals with poor mobility often have limited mediolateral balance, which requires torque generation in the frontal plane. Existing hip exoskeletons that assist in both the sagittal and frontal planes are too heavy and bulky for use in the real world. Here we present the kinematic model, mechatronic design, and benchtop and human testing of a powered hip exoskeleton with a unique parallel kinematic actuator. The exoskeleton is lightweight (5.3 kg), has a slim profile, and can generate 30 N·m and 20 N·m of torque during gait in the sagittal and frontal planes. The exoskeleton torque density is 5.7 N·m/kg-53% higher than previously possible with series kinematic design. Testing with five healthy subjects indicate that frontal plane torques applied during stance or swing can alter step width, while sagittal plane torque can assist with hip flexion and extension. A device with these characteristics may improve both gait economy and balance in the real world.

7. Material Scrunching Enables Working Channels in Miniaturized Vine-Inspired Robots.
PMID:日期:2024-02-27A new subclass of soft robot, known as tip-extending or "vine" robots, consists of long inflatable devices that move through the environment by extending from the tip. A key requirement for many applications of these robots is a working channel-a hollow tube through the core of the robot for passing tools, sensors, fluids, etc. While working channels have been proposed in a few vine robots, it remains an open challenge to create miniaturized vine robots (diameter < 1 cm) with working channels that enable continuous access through the core. In this paper, we analyze the growth models of current vine robot designs and show that the working channel greatly increases required pressure to grow at small scales due to internal friction. Based on this insight, we propose the concept of storing scrunched material at the tip of the vine robot to circumvent this frictional force. We validate our models and demonstrate this concept via prototypes down to diameters of 2.3 mm. Overall, this work enables the creation of miniaturized vine robots with working channels, which significantly enhances their practicality and potential for impact in applications such as minimally invasive surgery.

8. CRANE: A Redundant, Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Computed Tomography Robot for Heightened Needle Dexterity within a Medical Imaging Bore.
PMID:日期:2024-02-12Computed Tomography (CT) image guidance enables accurate and safe minimally invasive treatment of diseases, including cancer and chronic pain, with needle-like tools via a percutaneous approach. The physician incrementally inserts and adjusts the needle with intermediate images due to the accuracy limitation of free-hand adjustment and patient physiological motion. Scanning frequency is limited to minimize ionizing radiation exposure for the patient and physician. Robots can provide high positional accuracy and compensate for physiological motion with fewer scans. To accomplish this, the robots must operate within the confined imaging bore while retaining sufficient dexterity to insert and manipulate the needle. This paper presents CRANE: CT Robotic Arm and Needle Emplacer, a CT-compatible robot with a design focused on system dexterity that enables physicians to manipulate and insert needles within the scanner bore as naturally as they would be able to by hand. We define abstract and measurable clinically motivated metrics for in-bore dexterity applicable to general-purpose intra-bore image-guided needle placement robots, develop an automatic robot planning and control method for intra-bore needle manipulation and device setup, and demonstrate the redundant linkage design provides dexterity across various human morphology and meets the clinical requirements for target accuracy during an in-situ evaluation.

9. Unified Shape and External Load State Estimation for Continuum Robots.
PMID:日期:2024-02-01Continuum robots navigate narrow, winding passageways while safely and compliantly interacting with their environments. Sensing the robot's shape under these conditions is often done indirectly, using a few coarsely distributed (e.g. strain or position) sensors combined with the robot's mechanics-based model. More recently, given high-fidelity shape data, external interaction loads along the robot have been estimated by solving an inverse problem on the mechanics model of the robot. In this paper, we argue that since shape and force are fundamentally coupled, they should be estimated simultaneously in a statistically principled approach. We accomplish this by applying continuous-time batch estimation directly to the arclength domain. A general continuum robot model serves as a statistical prior which is fused with discrete, noisy measurements taken along the robot's backbone. The result is a continuous posterior containing both shape and load functions of arclength, as well as their uncertainties. We first test the approach with a Cosserat rod, i.e. the underlying modeling framework that is the basis for a variety of continuum robots. We verify our approach numerically using distributed loads with various sensor combinations. Next, we experimentally validate shape and external load errors for highly concentrated force distributions (point loads). Finally, we apply the approach to a tendon-actuated continuum robot demonstrating applicability to more complex actuated robots.

10. A Kinetostatic Model for Concentric Push-Pull Robots.
PMID:日期:2023-10-26Concentric push-pull robots (CPPR) operate through the mechanical interactions of concentrically nested, laser-cut tubes with offset stiffness centers. The distal tips of the tubes are attached to each other, and relative displacement of the tube bases generates bending in the CPPR. Previous CPPR kinematic models assumed two tubes, planar shapes, no torsion, and no external loads. In this paper, we develop a new, more general CPPR model accounting for any number of tubes, describing their variable-curvature 3D shape when actuated, including the effects of torsion and external loads. To accomplish this, we employ a modified Kirchhoff rod model for each tube (with offset stiffness center) and embed the constraints of concentricity. We use an energy method to determine robot shape as a function of actuation and external loading. We experimentally validate this kinetostatic model on prototype CPPRs with two tubes and three tubes and non-constant laser-cut patterns that create variable curvature and stiffness. Experimental results agree with the model, paving the way for use of this model in design optimization, planning, and control of CPPRs.
