1. Meteoritic organic matter records primitive oxygen reservoirs of the solar system.
PMID:日期:2026-10-06Unraveling the complex formation and alteration history for extraterrestrial organic matter is key to understanding the chemical evolution of the solar system (SS) and potentially even life's emergence on Earth. In this study, we performed high-precision triple oxygen isotope measurements on insoluble organic matter (IOM) sourced from a diverse suite of carbonaceous chondrites (CCs). Remarkably, the IOM from primitive Type 1 and 2 CCs-including CI, CM, CR, Bells, and Tarda-have oxygen isotope compositions that cluster on or near the CCAM line, which is itself related to the mixing of primitive oxygen isotope reservoirs residing within the early SS. This finding suggests that primitive meteoritic OM acquired oxygen of primitive origin and that those isotopic signatures have been minimally altered by parent body processes, offering critical constraints to assess the synthetic origin of meteoritic OM and evolution of SS oxygen reservoirs.

2. Compound drought-heat wave hazards are concentrated in US regions with multiple social vulnerabilities and agricultural dependence.
PMID:日期:2026-10-06Compound drought and heat wave (CDHW) events are becoming more frequent and intense across the contiguous United States, increasing risks to human health, ecosystems, agriculture, and energy production systems. However, their distribution across socioeconomically vulnerable communities remains largely unexplored at the national scale. In this study, we develop a CDHW metric by integrating weekly US Drought Monitor classifications with daily temperature extremes from 2000-2021, allowing consistent mapping of CDHW occurrences along county-level socioeconomic conditions. Our analysis reveals significant regional differences, with elevated CDHW occurrences concentrated in the South, Southeast, and western United States. Regions facing greater socioeconomic challenges, including poverty, high agricultural employment, and health-related vulnerabilities, experience notably higher CDHW risks. Greater spatial concentration of CDHW occurrences, as indicated by higher Gini coefficient values, occurs where multiple socioeconomic vulnerabilities intersect, such as in counties with large poor populations and older housing. These findings indicate that CDHW events are unevenly distributed across socially vulnerable communities, underscoring the need for targeted adaptation strategies to reduce climate risks for the most vulnerable communities.

3. Cassiterite U-Pb geochronology: A framework for tin provenance in the Bronze Age world.
PMID:日期:2026-10-06The origin of Bronze Age tin is one of the most compelling mysteries in global archaeology. A number of studies were carried out to identify fingerprints to determine tin sources, but all failed to suit the contexts of Bronze Age China. This study provides the first comprehensive provenance analysis of the tin ore utilized during the Shang dynasty of China. Using U-Pb dating analysis on cassiterite grains surviving in various contexts including primary smelting site, metal resource hoard, and bronze casting workshop, this study demonstrates that cassiterite materials from the Great Hinggan Range polymetallic belt, Northeast China, were transported to the Middle Huai River region over 1,500 km to the south for tin bronze production during the Middle Shang period. This finding reveals a long-distance, continental-scale metal circulation system comparable to contemporaneous tin supply networks across the world, extending the concept of "bronzization", the Bronze Age as premodern globalization, into East Asia. It also establishes a methodological framework for resolving the tin provenance questions of Bronze Age China and beyond.

4. Mitochondrial NADP(H)-dependent de novo dTMP biosynthesis counteracts the cytotoxicity of PARP inhibitors.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29PARP inhibitors (PARPis), known to elicit mitochondrial protection in nononcological diseases by elevating the cellular NAD pool, exhibit potent cytotoxicity in selected human cancers. The role of mitochondrial metabolism in PARPi-mediated antitumor therapy remains unexplored. Here, we propose a causal link between mitochondrial NAD metabolism and PARPi responsiveness. In PARPi-non-responsive tumor cells, PARP inhibition specifically expands mitochondrial NADP(H) [mito-NADP(H)] pool, thereby facilitating de novo mitochondrial dTMP (mito-dTMP) biosynthesis and maintaining mitochondrial dTTP (mito-dTTP) pool to prevent uracil misincorporation into mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), regardless of homologous recombination (HR) status. Mechanistically, loss of PTPN1 ADPRylation by PARPi abolishes its phosphatase activity toward STAT3, yielding enhanced STAT3 phosphorylation and the subsequent transactivation of FoxO1. FoxO1 modulates transcriptomic signature governing mitochondrial NADPH fluxes to de novo mito-dTMP generation. Our results uncover a fundamental vulnerability that can be leveraged by cotargeting STAT3 and PARP to trigger mitochondrial dysfunction.

5. Double descent without digital computation.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29The success of large-scale AI relies on the phenomenon of double descent, where overfitting first increases and then counterintuitively decreases as the network grows relative to the amount of training data and becomes overparameterized. In this overparameterized regime it is easy to find good solutions that do not overfit. However, double descent has not previously been observed in physical neural networks, which are attracting increasing attention but remain small-scale. Here we demonstrate double descent in a decentralized analog network of self-adjusting resistive elements. This system trains itself and performs tasks without a digital processor, offering potential gains in energy efficiency and speed-but must inevitably confront component nonidealities. We find that standard training protocols fail to yield double descent, but a modified protocol that accommodates generic imperfections succeeds, qualitatively matching digital neural network simulations. Our findings show that analog physical neural networks, if appropriately trained, can reproduce important facets of overparameterized digital learning. This result is critical if such networks are to be scaled up to useful sizes.

6. On the power of multipartite entanglement for pseudotelepathy.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29As early as 1935, Schrödinger recognized entanglement as "not but rather characteristic trait of quantum mechanics, the one that enforces its entire departure from classical lines of thought." Indeed, most remarkable phenomena in quantum information science, such as quantum computing and quantum teleportation, spring from clever uses of entanglement. Among them, pseudotelepathy enables two or more players to win systematically at some cooperative games with no need for communication between them, a restriction that would make the task impossible in a classical world. We investigate the power of multipartite entanglement for pseudotelepathy. Some known games that can be won with tripartite entanglement cannot be won with bipartite entanglement, but they can be won with bipartite nonsignaling resources such as the so-called Popescu-Rohrlich nonlocal box. We exhibit a five-player game that can be won with tripartite entanglement, but not with arbitrary bipartite nonsignaling resources even in the presence of arbitrary five-partite classical resources. This illustrates both the power of bipartite nonsignaling resources (over bipartite entanglement) and the even superior power of tripartite entanglement.

7. Dynamic hydroxide transport intrusively damages anion exchange membranes.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29Conventional assessments of anion exchange membrane (AEM) stability primarily focus on static alkaline resistance, failing to capture critical degradation mechanisms under operating conditions involving ion transport. Herein, we report that dynamic ion transport processes fundamentally govern AEM stability degradation. Through 1,000 h of continuous electrically driven ion transport, severe mechanical damage, including crater formation, occurred on the ion-entry side of the AEM. This damage caused a significant decay in fuel cell performance (>40%) and a drastic 15-fold increase in hydrogen crossover, in stark contrast to the case subjected to 1,000 h of static alkaline exposure, which showed no measurable decay. In-depth investigation using in situ wide-angle X-ray scattering and concentration gradient ion transport measurements revealed that the intrusion of OH(HO) clusters induces local overswelling, ruptures polymer chains, and attacks piperidinium cations primarily via nucleophilic reaction, diverging from the Hofmann elimination pathway dominant under static alkaline conditions.

8. Rewriting the history of the invasive spiny water flea in North America.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29Introduced species cause significant environmental impacts, making timely detection key for mitigation. The spiny water flea, , is considered one of the most ecologically and economically destructive species in North American freshwaters. For decades, management focused on limiting its spread from the Laurentian Great Lakes, where it is believed to have been released via ballast water from trans-Atlantic ships entering the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1980s. Combining microfossil analysis from Pb-dated sediments, radiocarbon dating of chitinous remains, and sediment DNA, we show was present at low densities in inland lakes in Ontario, Canada, at least 100 years earlier than initially reported. We then consider how its recent proliferation coincided with widespread environmental change and shifts in other processes influencing its establishment and population growth. These results challenge widely accepted assumptions about the history of in North America and highlight the importance of temporal perspectives for managing species introductions and their impacts.

9. Follistatin drives AR-independent prostate cancer through BMP signaling inactivation and microenvironmental remodeling.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29Resistance to androgen receptor (AR)-targeted therapies remains a major clinical challenge in advanced prostate cancer. Here we identify follistatin (FST), TGFβ superfamily antagonist, as a key driver of AR-independence and treatment resistance. During anti-AR therapy, cancer cells progressively lose the positive feedback loop between AR and BMP signaling, leading to FST upregulation that further suppresses this circuit. FST antagonizes BMP11-dependent AR maintenance and upregulates the lineage plasticity regulator SOX9, conferring resistance to enzalutamide while promoting stem-like properties and metastatic capabilities. FST also remodels the tumor microenvironment by driving osteoclastogenesis and compromising T cell effector function. Clinically, FST inversely correlates with PSA levels and associates with poor outcomes in enzalutamide-treated patients. We developed FST-Trap, which effectively neutralizes FST, resensitizes resistant tumors to AR-targeted therapy, and enhances immunotherapy efficacy. This establishes FST as both a biomarker and therapeutic target for AR-independent prostate cancer.

10. Early catarrhine evolution in the light of semicircular canal and vestibule shape.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29The phylogenetic relationships of early catarrhines (Old World monkeys and apes) are contentious, particularly regarding pliopithecoids, which are considered a clade of Miocene stem catarrhines more derived than most of their Oligocene counterparts. However, their debated affinities and the uncertain phylogenetic relationships of the Oligocene catarrhine leave their systematic position unresolved. Notably, displays a mosaic morphology, coupling primitive craniodental traits with a fully ossified ectotympanic (as opposed to the annular/incompletely ossified ear tube of stem catarrhines and early stem hominoids), a characteristic customarily considered as a shared-derived trait of crown catarrhines. To clarify the early evolutionary history of catarrhines, we analyzed the semicircular canal and vestibule morphology of , the pliopithecoid , the stem cercopithecoid , and the stem hominoid . Using diffeomorphic deformation-based geometric morphometrics on a broad anthropoid sample, we quantified shape variation and inferred ancestral morphotypes. Our results reveal that retains a primitive, platyrrhine-like inner ear, lacking all crown catarrhine synapomorphies. We also recover similarities between and the other analyzed pliopithecoid (), as these taxa share some derived traits with crown catarrhine (particularly, in the anterior semicircular canal), while missing most hominoid and cercopithecoid synapomorphies. Furthermore, displays a derived, cercopithecoid-like morphology indistinguishable from extant Old World monkeys, whereas exhibits unexpected derived, ape-like features. These findings support that pliopithecoids are stem catarrhines more derived than and imply that its tubular ectotympanic must have evolved independently from crown catarrhines, thus representing a remarkable instance of homoplasy.
