1. Mobilising Zionist and philo-Semitic sentiments through melodrama: Brazilian biblical telenovelas in the production of a neo-Pentecostal political culture.
PMID:日期:2025-10-14Biblical telenovelas have been extensively produced by one of the world's largest neo-Pentecostal churches, the Brazilian Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG). Since 2010, the UCKG's TV network has been broadcasting and exporting these epic biblical series, which have played a significant role in solidifying a unique neo-Pentecostal melodramatic culture. This contribution delves into the telenovela (of 2017-2018 and broadcast again in 2024 during the war in the Middle East) to demonstrate how biblical telenovelas can foster political sentiments. Research in the field of media and religion has underscored how media can shape religious imagination, allow individuals to experience transcendence, and create alternative avenues for religious practice due to its meaning-making capabilities. Furthermore, studies on Pentecostal telenovelas have shed light on the evangelising potential of the genre and its significance in the public domain. However, there is a gap in understanding how these melodramatic narratives not only activate religious imagination but also political inclinations. This contribution seeks to fill this gap, examining how everyday politics, philo-Semitic, and Zionist inclinations are nurtured through the UCKG's Biblical telenovelas.

2. Unsettled grounds: religion, gender and sexual nationalism in a Dutch city.
PMID:日期:2025-01-27This contribution explores how the polarisation between religion, gender and sexuality in relation to nationalism manifests in the Dutch city of The Hague. Conceptual debates on secularism and sexual nationalism, as well as the materialist study of religion, are brought into conversation with ethnographic data on African Christian placemaking in the city. The contribution demonstrates how materialisations of Dutch secular nationalism become visible in religious spatial practices of religious migrant communities in their interaction with the city. It argues that African Dutch communities - youth in particular - experience and navigate the city as a space of multiplicity. They live, produce, and navigate contestations over gender and sexuality in secular and religious spaces in the city on a day-to-day basis. It offers alternative perspectives in relation to the political mobilisation of religion, secularity, gender and sexuality as culture wars or discursive battlefields in research and policy debates.

3. Same difference, different sameness: Gender-navigating the denominational maze in a Christian African context.
PMID:日期:2024-05-22The large and growing denominational diversity of sub-Saharan Christianity has attracted considerable scholarly attention, but its implications for individual experiences and well-being remain poorly understood. I examine women's perceptions, assessments, and practices in everyday construction of church idiosyncrasies, clustering, and hierarchies and women's abilities and propensities to navigate along and across the corresponding organisational boundaries in a predominantly Christian setting in rural Mozambique. The analysis uses a combination of data from a census of religious congregations, a household survey, in-depth interviews, and participant observation conducted over a decade. It demonstrates that women's church involvement is socially indispensable yet also subjectively non-binding. Accordingly, church boundaries, while clearly delineated and recognised, are also seen as highly permeable. This permeability facilitates the crossing of those boundaries but may also disincentivise such crossing. Although rural women are increasingly capable of navigating through the religious space, they are generally precluded from exiting that space altogether, as secular options for non-family social anchoring remain very limited in this and other similar low-income patriarchal contexts.

4. The Russian Orthodox Church as moral norm entrepreneur.
PMID:日期:2016-04-02Conflicts over religious symbols in the public sphere, gay marriage, abortion or gender equality have shown their disruptive potential across many societies in the world. They have also become the subject of political and legal debates in international institutions. These conflicts emerge out of different worldviews and normative conceptions of the good, and they are frequently framed in terms of competing interpretations of human rights. One newcomer voice in conflicts over rights and values in the international sphere is the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), which in recent years has become an active promoter of 'traditional values' both inside Russia and internationally. This article studies the ideational prerequisites and dynamics of Russian Orthodox 'norm protagonism' in the international arena.
