1. Red novae, their progenitors, and remnants.
PMID:日期:2026-10-03Red novae or luminous red novae are a class of optical transients that have emerged over the past two decades. They occupy an intermediate-luminosity regime between classical novae and supernovae and are characterized by cool, slowly expanding ejecta and a pronounced evolution toward red, dust-enshrouded remnants. These events are now widely interpreted as the outcome of binary coalescence involving non-compact stars, providing a rare opportunity to directly observe the dynamical phases of stellar mergers and their immediate aftermath. Observational studies of red novae provide a glimpse into the still poorly understood physics of unstable mass transfer and common-envelope evolution in binary stars, responsible for the formation of high-energy astrophysical phenomena, compact binary systems, and gravitational-wave sources. In this review, we synthesize current observational knowledge of red novae, including their outburst properties, population characteristics, and long-term remnants. Observations of light curves, spectra, and circumstellar environments reveal a complex interplay between mass ejection, collisions, radiative processes, and dust formation. Archival detections of red novae progenitors show a diversity of systems, ranging from low-mass contact binaries to massive evolved stars, with a notable representation of post-main-sequence stars. We also examine current efforts to predict red nova outbursts and establish robust event rates in the Local Universe, both of which remain challenging. Finally, we outline future prospects, including the impact of large-scale time-domain surveys and the potential connection between stellar mergers and gravitational-wave sources.

2. The orbital dynamics of the LMC and SMC about the Milky Way.
PMID:日期:2026-09-29This review summarizes the changing observational and theoretical landscape that has led to rapid developments in our understanding of the orbital history of the Milky Way's most massive satellite galaxies, the LMC and SMC. The determination of high precision center-of-mass proper motions for the Clouds and their environs, coupled with new insights into the structure of dark matter halos from cosmological simulations, indicates that the Clouds are recent additions to the Milky Way's satellite system, where the LMC was sufficiently massive at infall to induce distortions in the Milky Way's dark matter halo, and bring in satellites of its own. To gain insights into the orbital history of the Clouds it is, therefore, necessary to integrate orbits in a time-evolving Milky Way + LMC potential. The proper motion measurements further indicate that the LMC and SMC have had a recent strong encounter with each other. This leaves open the impact of this encounter on their internal structures, and the degree of correspondence between their stellar, HI and dark matter centers. The choice of kinematic center in turn affects the center of mass proper motions; this is the biggest observational unknown, even in the high precision era. Given the expected mass loss of the SMC, the distortions it induces in the LMC halo, and the recent LMC-SMC close encounter, understanding the orbits of objects about the LMC (including the SMC) and interpreting observational data of the Clouds requires full N-body simulations that are constrained by their present-day structure and kinematics.

3. The era of precision cosmology with voids.
[英文摘要] Cosmic voids, the large underdense regions of our Universe, have emerged over the past decade as powerful cosmological laboratories: their simple dynamics, sensitivity to local gravitational effects and cosmic expansion, and ability to span large volumes, make them uniquely suited to test fundamental physics. Fueled by advances in theory, simulations, and observations, void science has matured into a precision tool for constraining the parameters of the standard cosmological model and its possible extensions. In this review, we provide a comprehensive description of the statistical tools developed to characterize voids, the theoretical models that link them to cosmological parameters, and the methodologies used to extract information from survey data. We highlight the growing synergy between void-based observables and other cosmological probes, and showcase the increasingly stringent constraints derived from voids measured from current and expected for upcoming surveys' data. With the advent of the next generation of galaxy surveys, voids are poised to play a central role in the future of cosmology, turning what was once regarded as emptiness into one of the most promising frontiers of fundamental science.

4. A rising tide: intrinsic alignments since the turn of the millennium.
PMID:日期:2025-10-16The alignments of galaxies across the large-scale structure of the Universe are known to be a source of contamination for gravitational lensing, but they can also probe cosmology and the physics of galaxy evolution in many ways. In this review, I cover developments in our understanding of intrinsic alignments over the past 25 years on: (1) different approaches to model intrinsic alignments across a range of scales, (2) existing observational constraints, (3) predictions from cosmological numerical -body and hydrodynamical simulations, (4) mitigation strategies to account for their contamination to lensing observables and (5) cosmological and astrophysical applications. While the review focuses mostly on two-point statistics of intrinsic alignments, I also give a summary of other statistics beyond two-point. Finally, I point out some of the open problems hindering the understanding or application of intrinsic alignments and how they might be overcome in the future.

5. Cosmic ray feedback in galaxies and galaxy clusters: A pedagogical introduction and a topical review of the acceleration, transport, observables, and dynamical impact of cosmic rays.
PMID:日期:2023-12-05Understanding the physical mechanisms that control galaxy formation is a fundamental challenge in contemporary astrophysics. Recent advances in the field of astrophysical feedback strongly suggest that cosmic rays (CRs) may be crucially important for our understanding of cosmological galaxy formation and evolution. The appealing features of CRs are their relatively long cooling times and relatively strong dynamical coupling to the gas. In galaxies, CRs can be close to equipartition with the thermal, magnetic, and turbulent energy density in the interstellar medium, and can be dynamically very important in driving large-scale galactic winds. Similarly, CRs may provide a significant contribution to the pressure in the circumgalactic medium. In galaxy clusters, CRs may play a key role in addressing the classic cooling flow problem by facilitating efficient heating of the intracluster medium and preventing excessive star formation. Overall, the underlying physics of CR interactions with plasmas exhibit broad parallels across the entire range of scales characteristic of the interstellar, circumgalactic, and intracluster media. Here we present a review of the state-of-the-art of this field and provide a pedagogical introduction to cosmic ray plasma physics, including the physics of wave-particle interactions, acceleration processes, CR spatial and spectral transport, and important cooling processes. The field is ripe for discovery and will remain the subject of intense theoretical, computational, and observational research over the next decade with profound implications for the interpretation of the observations of stellar and supermassive black hole feedback spanning the entire width of the electromagnetic spectrum and multi-messenger data.

6. Fast radio bursts.
PMID:日期:2019-05-24The discovery of radio pulsars over a half century ago was a seminal moment in astronomy. It demonstrated the existence of neutron stars, gave a powerful observational tool to study them, and has allowed us to probe strong gravity, dense matter, and the interstellar medium. More recently, pulsar surveys have led to the serendipitous discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs). While FRBs appear similar to the individual pulses from pulsars, their large dispersive delays suggest that they originate from far outside the Milky Way and hence are many orders-of-magnitude more luminous. While most FRBs appear to be one-off, perhaps cataclysmic events, two sources are now known to repeat and thus clearly have a longer lived central engine. Beyond understanding how they are created, there is also the prospect of using FRBs-as with pulsars-to probe the extremes of the Universe as well as the otherwise invisible intervening medium. Such studies will be aided by the high-implied all-sky event rate: there is a detectable FRB roughly once every minute occurring somewhere on the sky. The fact that less than a hundred FRB sources have been discovered in the last decade is largely due to the small fields-of-view of current radio telescopes. A new generation of wide-field instruments is now coming online, however, and these will be capable of detecting multiple FRBs per day. We are thus on the brink of further breakthroughs in the short-duration radio transient phase space, which will be critical for differentiating between the many proposed theories for the origin of FRBs. In this review, we give an observational and theoretical introduction at a level that is accessible to astronomers entering the field.
