1. Alcohol and Emotion Regulation Interventions: Effects on Men's Sexual Arousal, Impulsivity, Cognitions Regarding Sexual Consequences, and Sexually Coercive Tactics.
PMID:日期:2025-07-01Alcohol's cognitive effects exacerbate sexual assault perpetration by men against women. Emotion regulation interventions may reduce perpetration by modifying men's responses during sexual situations. The present study's goal was to examine how alcohol intoxication and emotion regulation interventions interacted to predict men's cognitive and behavioral reactions regarding sexual assault perpetration. Young men with self-reported sexual assault perpetration histories ( = 206) were randomly assigned to receive either a cognitive restructuring, mindfulness, or control intervention and to consume alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages before projecting themselves into a hypothetical, sexual scenario and completing in-the-moment assessments of their sexual arousal, impulsivity, cognitions, and sexual coercion. Results revealed that intoxicated men in the control intervention experienced more sexual arousal. Sexual arousal was subsequently associated with impulsivity, cognitions regarding sexual consequences, and sexual coercion. Findings support emotion regulation interventions as tools to prevent alcohol-involved perpetration and suggest a mechanism through which perpetration may be prevented.

2. Alcohol Intoxication, Sexual Misperception, and Sexual Assault Perpetration: The Role of Sexual Drive-Related Alcohol Expectancies.
PMID:日期:2025-06-10Sexual misperception - inaccurate perception of a partner's sexual interest and intent - is a potential link through which alcohol intoxication affects perpetration of sexual assault. Alcohol intoxication induces cognitive deficits that influence in-the-moment perceptions, such as sexual misperception and decision-making. Further, expectancies about alcohol's effects on behavior may be activated by alcohol-related cues and influence sexual misperception and behavior. Cisgender men who regularly consume alcohol ( = 96) completed a measure of alcohol expectancies related to sexual drive and were randomized to a beverage condition [alcohol (.10%gm) vs. control]. Participants completed a sexual assault behavioral analog and reported their perceptions of a hypothetical woman's sexual interest. Participants then reported their intentions to engage in sexual assault. Among intoxicated participants, sexual drive alcohol expectancies were positively associated with sexual misperception which predicted sexual assault intentions. Sexual assault prevention programming may benefit from cognitive strategies to address alcohol and sexuality-related beliefs.

3. Adversarial Heterosexual Beliefs, Sexual Entitlement Cognitions, and Condom Use Resistance Intentions among Sober versus Intoxicated Men: A Multigroup Mediation Model.
PMID:日期:2025-05-07Men's condom use resistance (CUR) is common and associated with negative health consequences. CUR can involve both coercive and noncoercive strategies, and like other types of sexual coercion, may be exacerbated by alcohol use. Following sociocultural and feminist theories, the current study examined the associations between adversarial heterosexual beliefs and coercive and noncoercive CUR intentions via sexual entitlement cognitions among sober versus intoxicated men. Non-problem drinking young adult men ( = 282) completed background surveys, an in-lab alcohol administration procedure, and a hypothetical sexual scenario task. Results of multigroup path analysis showed that sexual entitlement cognitions mediated the associations between adversarial heterosexual beliefs and coercive and noncoercive CUR intentions. These associations were of similar strength among sober and intoxicated men. Findings lend support for the use of cognitive behavioral interventions and broader prevention efforts reducing societal messages that support hostile masculinity beliefs and cognitions to reduce CUR.

4. Training Humans to Detect Children's Lies Through Their Facial Expressions.
PMID:日期:2025-01-16The accurate detection of children's truthful and dishonest reports is essential as children can serve as important providers of information. Research using automated facial coding and machine learning found that children who were asked to lie about an event were more likely to look surprised when hearing the first question during an interview about said event. The present studies explored if humans can be trained to look for surprised expressions to detect children's deception. Participants made lie-detection judgments after seeing children's expressions in very brief clips. In Study 1, we compared performance across a training condition and control condition, and in Study 2 we modified the training. With training, adults could detect children's lies at above chance levels by viewing their facial expression. Detection accuracy was further improved with modified training (Study 2), but participants held a consistent lie bias. Challenges with using facial expressions to detect deceit are discussed.

5. Perceptual Expertise of Forensic Examiners and Reviewers on Tests of Cross-Race and Disguised Face Identification and Face Memory.
PMID:日期:2024-12-04Forensic facial professionals have been shown in previous studies to identify people from frontal face images more accurately than untrained participants when given 30 s per face pair. We tested whether this superiority holds in more challenging conditions. Two groups of forensic facial professionals (examiners, reviewers) and untrained participants were tested in three lab-based tasks: other-race face identification, disguised face identification, and face memory. For other-race face identification, on same-race faces, examiners were superior to controls; on different-race identification, examiners and controls performed comparably. Examiners were superior to controls for impersonation disguise, but not consistently superior for evasion disguise. Examiners' performance on the Cambridge Face Memory Test (CFMT+) was marginally better than reviewers and controls. We conclude that under laboratory-style conditions, professional examiners' identification superiority does not generalize completely to other-race and disguised faces. Future work should administer other-race and disguise face identification tests that allow forensic professionals to follow methods and procedures they typically use in casework.

6. Who Said What? The Effects of Cognitive Load on Source Monitoring and Memory for Multiple witnesses' Accounts.
PMID:日期:2024-11-27Investigative interviewers are often required to accurately remember information that has been provided by different people. This can be at the scene of an event or during follow-up investigations in interview rooms. Interviewers must accurately monitor the source of information to differentiate between witnesses' accounts and to assess what information is novel and what has been corroborated by others or by physical evidence. The current research examined the effects of cognitive load on memory and source monitoring accuracy for information provided by multiple witnesses. Participants, under conditions of high cognitive load (HCL) where load was induced via interviewer-relevant tasks (e.g., formulating questions) or no cognitive load (NCL), watched five mock-witnesses' accounts of the same crime. Each witness provided several details of the crime that were unique to their individual account. When asked about account details, and which witness had provided each detail, mock-interviewers' memory accuracy was lower in the HCL condition than the NCL condition. There was no difference between cognitive load conditions for source monitoring accuracy, which was poor regardless of condition.

7. False memories for true and false vaccination information form in line with pre-existing vaccine opinions.
PMID:DOI:日期:2022-10-04Misinformation continually threatens efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic, with vaccine misinformation now a key concern. False memories for misinformation can influence behavioural intentions, yet little is known about the factors affecting (false) memories for vaccine-related news items. Across two experiments (total = 1481), this paper explores the effects of pre-existing vaccine opinions on reported memories for true and false news items. In Study 1, participants ( = 817) were exposed to fabricated pro- or anti-vaccine news items, and then asked if they have a memory of this news event having occurred. In Study 2, participants ( = 646) viewed true pro- or anti-vaccine news items. News items were more likely to be remembered when they aligned with participants' pre-existing vaccine beliefs, with stronger effects for pro-vaccine information. We conclude by encouraging researchers to consider the role of attitudinal bias when developing interventions to reduce susceptibility to misinformation.

8. Black-and-white thinking and conspiracy beliefs prevent parents from vaccinating their children against COVID-19.
PMID:DOI:日期:2022-09-21Understanding predictors of parents' willingness to vaccinate their children appears fundamental to promote vaccine acceptability, especially in a pandemic scenario. The present study aimed to investigate the role of conspiracy beliefs and absolutist thinking in parental attitude toward COVID-19 vaccine, and the predictive role of parents' individual differences on decisions against children's vaccination. An online survey was administered to 415 parents of children aged 5-11, at the very beginning of the vaccination targeting this population in Italy. Results showed that absolutism predicted the tendency to believe in conspiracies, associated with a negative attitude toward the COVID-19 vaccine administration to children. Moreover, mothers were less willing to vaccinate children and parents of children aged 5-7 were more hesitant, or even against vaccination, than parents of older children. Finally, the worry about consequences of COVID-19 infection on children's health facilitated vaccine adherence. These findings contribute to deepening mechanisms regarding the vaccine acceptability.

9. Maintaining intimacy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
PMID:DOI:日期:2022-05-20The present study investigated whether autobiographical memories serve to maintain feelings of intimacy in times of social isolation that result from the restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Data came from 104 young and older adults who reported three important and three social memories, that is, memories about someone the participants were unable to meet because of the pandemic-related restrictions. Our findings support that social memories more frequently serve intimacy functions than important memories do, and this difference is more pronounced for older compared to young adults. Moreover, social loneliness is associated with less frequent use of important memories for intimacy functions, whereas emotional loneliness shows a positive association. Results are discussed in terms of what type of memories can be used to maintain intimacy feelings across age groups and regarding qualitative and quantitative aspects of loneliness that differently predict the use of memories for intimacy functions.

10. This should help with that: A behavioral investigation into self-derivation of knowledge about prescription medications.
PMID:DOI:日期:2022-02-06Self-derivation of new factual knowledge is crucial for building a knowledge base. In three experiments, we investigated self-derivation about prescription medications. In Experiment 1, adults self-derived new knowledge across textual materials on 40% of trials. Participants in Experiment 2 performed similarly (42%), even when half the information was presented in videos. It was crucial that participants received both learning episodes to successfully self-derive: control condition participants received half the necessary information and performed significantly lower. When a delay was imposed between related facts in Experiment 3, participants self-derived on only 33% of trials and performance did not differ from the control condition. The present research expanded our understanding of adults' learning and self-derivation across media about medications. It revealed room for improvement in adults' learning and self-derivation about health information. This work suggests the need to identify factors that alter performance, including better understanding of the properties of information sources.
