    1. Cultural Risk and Protective Factors Associated With Sexual Assault Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White Women.

There is a paucity of research on sexual assault among Hispanic college women. Existing studies indicate that Hispanic college women, relative to non-Hispanic White women, report similar mental health sequelae following a sexual assault; thus, factors that protect or increase their risk are an area worthy of further investigation. Emerging research suggests that Latino cultural values, such as familism, social affiliation, and ethnic identity, may serve as protective factors for sexual assault among Hispanic college women, while acculturation with mainstream culture and perceived discrimination may function as risk factors. A substantial body of research also has found that alcohol and cannabis use increase risk for sexual assault. This study examined whether ethnicity moderated the effects of cultural protective and risk factors on sexual assault experiences among Hispanic and non-Hispanic White college women. Participants included 329 college women who completed self-report questionnaires on cultural factors, alcohol and cannabis use, and sexual assault history since the age of 14. Ethnicity was associated significantly with sexual assault severity, with Hispanic women, relative to non-Hispanic White women, reporting less severe sexual assault experiences. Perceived discrimination was associated positively with sexual assault severity among both Hispanic and non-Hispanic White women, as was greater alcohol and cannabis use. These findings highlight the importance of exploring additional cultural factors that may influence sexual assault risk among non-Hispanic White and Hispanic college women.

Sexual violence has often been conceptualized as an extreme form of gender inequality, and in some theoretical frameworks, it is linked to patriarchal social structures that may contribute to the normalization of male domination and sexual coercion. Understanding the factors associated with sexual violence perpetration among men is essential for improving risk assessment, prevention, and intervention strategies. The present study examined whether problematic pornography consumption (PPC), attitudes toward sexual consent, and adherence to rape myths are associated with the perpetration of sexual violence among heterosexual cisgender Spanish men. The sample consisted of 383 adult men aged between 18 and 61 years, of whom 34% reported having committed at least one act of sexual violence. Sexual violence perpetration was assessed using a standardized self-report measure that captures multiple forms of sexual aggression. A latent class analysis identified two distinct risk profiles (low risk and high risk) among men with a history of sexual violence (HSV), allowing for the examination of heterogeneity in patterns of perpetration. The results showed that men with a HSV reported higher levels of PPC, less positive attitudes toward sexual consent, and greater adherence to rape myths compared with men without such a history. These differences were particularly pronounced among men classified within the high-risk profile. Moreover, adherence to rape myths emerged as the most consistent predictor across different forms of sexual aggression, whereas PPC and negative attitudes toward sexual consent intensified risk in specific profiles. Overall, these findings underscore the importance of integrating these variables into forensic assessment processes, interventions targeting sexual offenders, and the development of public policies aimed at preventing sexual violence.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is an urgent global health and social problem. GBV has implications for women's health outcomes and causes disruption to an individual's ecosystem, including their educational attainment, economic stability, and safety. Refugee women are an underserved subpopulation of women who experience extreme vulnerability related to GBV and poor maternal health outcomes. The primary aim of the study was to gain foundational knowledge about the relationship between gender inequality and GBV in the lives of childbearing-aged refugee women in Malawi, including healthcare utilization. Specifically, we sought to (a) explore women's perspectives on the gendered nature of violence, poverty, and vulnerability in the refugee camp context, (b) understand women's experiences and perceptions of health and social services for GBV survivors, and (c) identify structural factors that facilitate or impede women's access to justice and support. Guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we conducted a qualitative analysis reporting on the qualitative sub-study of a larger mixed-methods project. A total of 50 women were interviewed using focus group discussions from a refugee camp in Malawi on their health, well-being, and experiences with GBV. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings revealed a cycle of gendered poverty, vulnerability, and a gendered system response. The following three subthemes were identified: (a) single motherhood and abandonment as drivers of poverty, (b) marriage as a gendered survival strategy, and (c) the constraining effect of children and caregiving. Poverty is gendered, driven by abandonment, enforced through survivalist marriages, and cemented by caregiving constraints. Systemic responses often replicate the very power imbalances that enable GBV, further perpetuating the cycle. These findings underscore the need for culturally appropriate policies and integrated interventions to address the intersecting social and structural factors contributing to gendered violence, poverty, and vulnerability among refugee women.

Violence represents a significant psychosocial problem affecting both individuals and societies. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between empathy and violence tendency and investigated the mediating roles of emotional intelligence, emotional regulation, and masculine behaviour dimensions in this relationship within the sociocultural context of Türkiye. Data were collected from 703 individuals aged 18 and over through an online questionnaire between October and December 2024 and analysed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. The findings indicated that empathy was negatively associated with violence tendency and positively related to emotional intelligence and emotional regulation. Emotional regulation demonstrated a significant negative relationship with violence tendency, whereas selected masculine behaviour dimensions, particularly independent lifestyle/exaggerated self-confidence and control, were positively associated with violence tendency. The proposed model explained 29% of the variance in violence tendency, highlighting the role of emotional and sociocultural behavioural factors. By examining empathy, emotional competencies, and selected masculine-coded behavioural dimensions together in the Turkish context, this study contributes to the literature by showing that individual emotional capacities and control-oriented behavioural tendencies may have distinct associations with violence tendency.

Bullying has enduring negative effects on development in adolescents. While research has focused on reducing risk factors such as adverse childhood experiences for bullying, growing evidence highlights the protective role of positive childhood experiences (PCEs) in fostering resilience and preventing bullying. However, little is known about how combinations of PCEs within the social-ecological context influence bullying. The researchers aimed to (a) identify patterns of PCEs, (b) examine demographic factors associated with these patterns, and (c) investigate how different PCEs patterns relate to bullying victimization and perpetration. Data were drawn from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), a nationally representative survey of U.S. children's well-being. The final sample included 17,157 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years. This cross-sectional study used a three-step approach for latent class analysis to identify latent PCEs profiles and to examine their demographic predictors and associations with bullying behaviors. The study results identified three PCEs profiles: resilient and supported (RS; high across all indicators), supported and low engagement (SLE; high in most indicators but low in social engagement), and vulnerable and unsupported (VU; low across all indicators). Family- and individual-level factors served as significant predictors of membership in the three PCEs profiles. Both SLE and VU groups reported higher bullying victimization and perpetration than RS, with VU showing the highest levels. The current findings suggest that bullying prevention strategies should extend beyond individual and school-based efforts to include community-level approaches and to coordinate school-family-community partnerships that strengthen protective experiences and address persistent inequities in access to PCEs among adolescents.

Weapon-related factors are often considered especially concerning in threat assessment, as weapons can facilitate severe violence. However, weapon reference in threatening communications has received limited empirical attention. The present study examined (a) risk factors and warning behaviors associated with weapon reference, (b) whether weapon reference predicts violent outcomes, and (c) whether threats that reference weapons are more credible than threats that do not reference weapons. Participants were North American adults ( = 257) who self-reported making an explicit threat of violence and completed measures assessing threat characteristics, violence risk factors, warning behaviors, and subsequent violent outcomes. Descriptive statistics, chi-square analyses, and logistic regression models were used to examine associations between weapon reference, related factors, and violent outcomes. Weapon reference was associated with a broad range of risk factors and warning behaviors for violence including substance use, gang involvement, violent attitudes, planning, novel aggression, and weapon availability. Results also indicated that weapon reference was associated with significantly greater odds of subsequent violence, although there was often a discrepancy between the details of the threat and the violence that ultimately occurred. These findings support the consideration of weapon reference as an important risk factor and an impetus for further information gathering given its association with other risk factors and violent outcomes.

Although experiencing crime is a common source of trauma, it remains unclear how the impact of violent crime translates into trajectories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms following treatment. The purpose of the present study was to identify the proportion of survivors of violent crime whose PTSD symptoms remained clinically significant over time and assess their characteristics to inform treatment. The first objective of this study was to determine the trajectories of PTSD symptoms in survivors of violent crime. The second objective was to assess the demographic, trauma-related and psychological risk factors that characterise the trajectories of PTSD symptoms. One hundred eighty-six survivors of violent crime were recruited at a trauma study centre and assigned to either a cognitive behavioural therapy treatment or control group. The participants' PTSD symptoms were measured within 2 weeks, 2 months and 6 months after their traumatic event. Group-based trajectory modelling was carried out to determine the development of PTSD symptoms over time. Three trajectories were found. A low initial symptoms trajectory with moderate improvement (34.9%), one with high initial symptoms that showed significant improvement (44.6%), and one with high initial symptoms that showed no improvement (20.5%). Trajectories were associated with demographic and psychological risk factors; these included comorbid anxiety and unemployment. The participants' PTSD symptoms followed three distinct trajectories, and trajectory membership was most strongly linked to comorbid psychological conditions and socioeconomic indicators.

Universities are central to education, but they are also places where discrimination and sexual harassment are prevalent. However, studies on discrimination, including sexual harassment, tend to focus on specific forms of experiences, places, or perpetrators, providing only a fragmented view of the problem. This study takes an integrative approach, aiming to analyze the patterns of perpetration, perpetrators, and places of discrimination and sexual harassment as one frequent form of discrimination. Between April and July 2023, a total of 1,358 students (14% response rate) completed an online survey for the investigation of discrimination and sexual harassment. Latent class analysis was applied to identify similar classes in terms of patterns of perpetration, perpetrators, and places of discrimination and sexual harassment. Cross-tabulations were used to measure class differences for risk assessment. A 3-class solution was found for both discrimination (class 1 'gender discrimination by faculty member in lectures', class 2 'discriminated in terms of gender, nationality, and political opinion by fellow students in the public and educational context', and class 3 'multiple affected by fellow students and teachers in public and educational context') and sexual harassment (class 1 'sexual harassment in terms of offensive comments by teachers in lectures', class 2 'sexual harassment in terms of starring and physical contact by fellow students in the public and educational context', and class 3 'multiple affected by fellow students in the public and educational context'). Significant class differences were found in the risk analyses. This study highlights the importance of specific measures for the private students' lives and the academic settings in which students and teachers interact. These measures differ in terms of perpetrators and patterns of perpetration and are linked to specific places of occurrence.

This study examines the disputes between the Chilean State's official memory and Mapuche collective memories regarding violence and State terrorism during the post-dictatorship period (2008-2025) in the Biobío and La Araucanía regions. Drawing on a post/decolonial approach and the notion of "long memories," it addresses State violence as a form of structural, political, and interpersonal/collective violence, whose expressions directly impact communities, families, and social bonds. Methodologically, the research combines critical discourse analysis of 108 news articles from La Tercera and El Mercurio with 45 life histories and 6 focus groups conducted with 95 Mapuche participants, analyzed through thematic analysis. Triangulation revealed three key axes of dispute: (a) hegemonic representations framing the Mapuche people as an "internal enemy" and legitimizing repression; (b) media-State legitimation of militarization, experienced as structural violence and the continuity of internal colonialism; and (c) narratives surrounding the killings of Mapuche community members that criminalize victims and silence State responsibility. The study concludes that official memory operates as a power device that erases and delegitimizes Mapuche agency, while subaltern memories act as epistemic resistance. It proposes expanding transitional justice frameworks to include indigenous memories and critically examining the media's role in reproducing narratives that legitimize State violence as a form of interpersonal and collective violence.

    10. Clarifying the Protective Role of Empowerment Against Weight/Shape Concerns Among Black and White Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence and are Residing in Shelter.

Women who have experienced intimate partner violence (W-IPV) exhibit relatively high levels of disordered eating (DE). Empowerment has been demonstrated to be a protective factor against negative mental health outcomes for W-IPV, but has not been studied, with respect to DE, in this population. Race is an important construct to understanding both empowerment and DE - Black women reliably demonstrate higher levels of empowerment and lower levels of weight/shape concerns (a core symptom of and risk factor for DE) than White women. Additionally, social support has been identified as a factor promoting empowerment among W-IPV, whereas posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms have been associated with DE. This study tested the associations among race, social support, empowerment, PTSD symptoms, and weight/shape concerns among W-IPV ( = 179; 55% Black and 45% White) residing in shelter. Empowerment was negatively correlated with weight/shape concerns for the full sample. Black W-IPV demonstrated higher levels of empowerment and lower levels of weight/shape concerns - there were no race differences on either social support or PTSD symptoms. Additionally, there was a significant indirect effect of race on weight/shape concerns via empowerment and PTSD symptoms, serially. Black W-IPV reported higher levels of empowerment than White W-IPV, which, in turn, was associated with lower levels of PTSD symptoms, which, finally, was associated with lower levels of weight/shape concerns. The current results suggest that empowerment may be protective against weight/shape concerns for W-IPV and may also help explain race differences in this construct. Providers who work with W-IPV should engage in practices that reinforce this culturally relevant protective factor for Black W-IPV. Additionally, future studies should attempt to replicate the current findings using a prospective longitudinal design and, if replicated, researchers should test the application of empowerment-based interventions to weight/shape concerns among W-IPV.
