1. Aerobiology in Africa: a continent-wide review of pollen, fungal spores, and allergy risk.
PMID:日期:2026-07-17Aerobiology is pivotal for understanding human health risks, ecosystem dynamics, as well as plant reproduction, including phylogeny. Africa's vast climatic and ecological diversity-from deserts to tropical rainforests-produces complex, region-specific aerobiological patterns that are often underinvestigated. Seasonal and meteorological factors, including rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind, and phenomena such as the Harmattan, significantly influence the distribution of airborne pollen and fungal spores, with direct implications for allergen exposure and the development of respiratory diseases. These complex systems are altered by anthropogenic climate change and disturbances. Despite these impacts, continent-wide aerobiological research remains limited, with most studies concentrated in research-strong nations such as South Africa and Nigeria. This review synthesizes current knowledge on African aerospora, highlighting spatial and temporal trends, dominant taxa, environmental drivers, sampling methodologies, and links to allergic disease, including projections under climate change. Data were collated from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, African Journals Online, and long-term monitoring initiatives. Key research gaps include sparse long-term monitoring data, inconsistent methodologies, and limited integration with public health outcomes and modelling approaches. Expanding monitoring networks and fostering interdisciplinary approaches are essential for improving our understanding of African aeroallergens and informing strategies to mitigate allergy and respiratory health risks, such as inhibiting the spread of invader plants such as and planting of exotic trees that produce an abundance of highly allergenic pollen, such as and .

2. Five years of national airborne pollen monitoring in South Africa: biome-specific calendars to inform allergy diagnosis and prevention.
PMID:日期:2026-04-15Pollen monitoring is crucial for understanding seasonal patterns, supporting allergy diagnosis and informing early warning tools to mitigate allergic diseases. The Southern Hemisphere lacks long-term pollen seasonal data, with extremely few records from Africa. We present pollen calendars based on five years of data from South Africa. Airborne pollen from 2019 to 2024 across South African biomes was collected in seven cities using Hirst-type volumetric spore traps and standard protocols. Daily concentrations were analysed by light microscopy. The five-year mean annual pollen integral (APIn) were calculated for each site. The five-year mean APIn was highest in the Grassland Biome (Bloemfontein) and lowest in the Albany Thicket Biome (Gqeberha). The Grassland Biome (Johannesburg) had the highest average tree pollen integral, while the Savanna Biome (Kimberley) had the highest average annual grass pollen integral. The grass family (Poaceae was the most common pollen type across all biomes. Other common taxa were exotic trees Cupressaceae, , and . Tree seasons were July to September, while grass and weed pollen seasons varied across the biomes. These five-year pollen calendars provide the first biome-specific national reference for airborne pollen exposure in South Africa. The findings provide baseline data for the clinical management of allergic disease. The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10453-026-09909-w.

3. Operational pollen classification using digital holography and fluorescence.
PMID:日期:2025-09-20This note introduces the newly developed MeteoSwiss operational pollen classification model based on digital holography and induced fluorescence measurements. A targeted selection of curated training datasets together with a revised model architecture result in considerable improvements compared to previous operational model. The new classification model, which has been trained specifically for Switzerland, is provided openly for use in a standard format for machine learning interoperability. In addition to the description of the new classification model, we motivate the need for this development by presenting the most significant issue met during the first 5 years of operation of the Swiss automatic pollen monitoring network.

4. Advancing automated identification of airborne fungal spores: guidelines for cultivation and reference dataset creation.
PMID:日期:2025-06-02Airborne bioparticles, including fungal spores, are of major concern for human and plant health, necessitating precise monitoring systems. While a European norm exists for manual volumetric monitoring, there's a growing interest in automated real-time methods. However, these methods rely heavily on machine learning, facing challenges due to diverse particle characteristics and limited training data availability, especially for fungal spores. This study aims to address this gap by outlining best practices for collecting reference material and creating tailored datasets for training algorithms. Using 17 fungal species from the Belgian fungi collection BCCM/IHEM, including five species, key aspects such as in vitro cultivation, dry spore harvest, and aerosolization were addressed. Simple classification models were developed, achieving varying accuracies on different monitors. The Plair Rapid-E+ demonstrated accuracies ranging from 83.4% to 95.1% (macro average F1-score 0.61), with better recognition for spp. and . The SwisensPoleno Jupiter, initially achieving a macro average F1-score of 0.77 with holographic images of eight genera, improved to 0.83 when combined with fluorescence data. Accuracies ranged from 55 to 95%, with notable performance for spp. and . Species differentiation was also shown to be possible for , but was more difficult for some species, while the macro average F1-score remained good (0.72). Overall, this protocol paves the way for more efficient, standard, and accurate automatic identification of airborne fungal spores. 5. Self-supervised and few-shot learning for robust bioaerosol monitoring.
PMID:日期:2025-04-09Real-time bioaerosol monitoring is improving the quality of life for people affected by allergies, but it often relies on deep learning models which pose challenges for widespread adoption. These models are typically trained in a supervised fashion and require considerable effort to produce large amounts of annotated data, an effort that must be repeated for new particles, geographical regions, or measurement systems. In this work, we show that self-supervised learning and few-shot learning can be combined to classify holographic images of pollen grains using a large collection of unlabelled data and only a few identified particles per type. We first demonstrate that self-supervision on pictures of unidentified particles from ambient air measurements enhances identification even when labelled data are abundant. Most importantly, it greatly improves few-shot classification when only a handful of labelled images are available. Our findings suggest that real-time bioaerosol monitoring workflows can be substantially optimized, and the effort required to adapt models for different situations considerably reduced. 6. {"_":"A second pollen peak in autumn in Vienna: reaching the point of no return?","i":["Artemisia"]}
PMID:日期:2024-09-19The (mugwort) pollen season usually ranges from July until September, with one peak period around mid-August in Vienna (Austria). During the last decade, pollen was also recorded later in September. This pattern was concluded by a significant peak pollen concentration day in autumn of 2023, which exceeded the usual summer peak pollen concentration day. The pollen data from Vienna for the last ten years (2014-2023) were therefore analysed for a temporal trend. In addition, weather data from Vienna (temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity and sun hours) were retrieved and analysed to find a possible association with pollen indices. No significant trend could be observed regarding the pollen season parameters and no correlation was found between the weather data and the pollen integrals during summertime. However, a significant positive correlation was found between higher temperatures during autumn and the occurrence of pollen during this time. This suggests that a significant change in the pollen season can be expected during years with a mild, summer-like autumn. Until now, it is not clear which species of cause the pollination in autumn. and are two major suspects that could have established themselves in Vienna, but further evidence is needed. Considering the impact of global climate change, the shift in the pollen season for described in this study could represent a point of no return. 7. Storms facilitate airborne DNA from leaf fragments outside the main tree pollen season.
7. 风暴促进了主要树木花粉季节以外叶片碎片的空气DNAPMID:日期:2024-05-22Bioaerosols are useful indicators of plant phenology and can demonstrate the impacts of climate change on both local and regional scales (e.g. pollen monitoring/flowering phenology). Analysing bioaerosols with eDNA approaches are becoming more popular to quantify the diversity of airborne plant environmental DNA (eDNA) and flowering season of plants and trees. Leaf abscission from broadleaved trees and other perennial species can also indicate the status of plant health in response to climate. This happens primarily during autumn in response to seasonal growth conditions and environmental factors, such as changing photoperiod and reduced temperatures. During this period biological material is released in larger quantities to the environment. Here, rural bioaerosol composition during late summer and autumn was captured by MiSEQ sequencing of the rRNA internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region, a common marker for taxonomic variation. Meteorological parameters were recorded from a proximal weather station. The composition of atmospheric taxa demonstrated that deciduous tree DNA forms part of the bioaerosol community during autumn and, for several common broadleaved tree species, atmospheric DNA abundance correlated to high wind events. This suggests that both flowering and autumn storms cause bioaerosols from deciduous trees that can be detected with eDNA approaches. This is an aspect that must be considered when eDNA methods are used to analyse either pollen or other fragments from trees. 8. {"_":"Automatic real-time monitoring of fungal spores: the case of spp.","i":["Alternaria"]}
PMID:日期:2023-02-05We present the first implementation of the monitoring of airborne fungal spores in real-time using digital holography. To obtain observations of spp. spores representative of their airborne stage, we collected events measured in the air during crop harvesting in a contaminated potato field, using a Swisens Poleno device. The classification algorithm used by MeteoSwiss for operational pollen monitoring was extended by training the system using this additional dataset. The quality of the retrieved concentrations is evaluated by comparison with parallel measurements made with a manual Hirst-type trap. Correlations between the two measurements are high, especially over the main dispersion period of spp., demonstrating the potential for automatic real-time monitoring of fungal spores.

PMID:日期:2022-12-19In recent years, significant efforts have been made to study changes in the levels of air pollutants at regional and urban scales, and changes in bioaerosols during air pollution events have attracted increasing attention. In this study, the bacterial structure of PM was analysed under different environmental conditions during hazy and non-hazy periods in Guilin. A total of 32 PM samples were collected in December 2020 and July 2021, and the microbial community structures were analysed using high-throughput sequencing methods. The results show that air pollution and climate change alter the species distribution and community diversity of bacteria in PM, particularly and . The structure of the bacterial community composition is related to diurnal variation, vertical height, and urban area and their interactions with various environmental factors. This is a comprehensive study that characterises the variability of bacteria associated with PM in a variety of environments, highlighting the impacts of environmental effects on the atmospheric microbial community. The results will contribute to our understanding of haze trends in China, particularly the relationship between bioaerosol communities and the urban environment. 10. {"_":"Environmental DNA reveals diversity and abundance of species in neighbouring heterogeneous landscapes in Worcester, UK.","i":["Alternaria"]}
PMID:日期:2022-10-23is a pathogenic and allergenic fungus affecting 400 plant species and 334 million people globally. This study aimed at assessing the diversity of species in airborne samples collected from closely located (7 km apart) and heterogeneous sites (rural, urban and unmanaged grassland) in Worcester and Lakeside, the UK. A secondary objective was to examine how the ITS1 subregion varies from ITS2 in species diversity and composition. Airborne spores were collected using Burkard 7-day and multi-vial Cyclone samplers for the period 5 July 2016-9 October 2019. Air samples from the Cyclone were amplified using the ITS1and ITS2 subregions and sequenced using Illumina MiSeq platform whereas those from the Burkard sampler were identified and quantified using optical microscopy. Optical microscopy and eDNA revealed a high abundance of in the rural, urban and unmanaged sites. ITS1 and ITS2 detected five and seven different species at the three sampling sites, respectively. , and were the most abundant. The rural, urban and unmanaged grassland sites had similar diversity (PERMANOVA) of the species due to similarity in land use and proximity of the sites. Overall, the study showed that heterogeneous and neighbouring sites with similar land uses can have similar species. It also demonstrated that an eDNA approach can complement the classical optical microscopy method in providing more precise information on fungal species diversity in an environment for targeted management. Similar studies can be replicated for other allergenic and pathogenic fungi. The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10453-022-09760-9.
