1. KISTI remote control room for CDF and Belle II collider experiments.
PMID:日期:2023-03-13Particle collider experiments would be continued even when one is not present at the laboratory (on-site). To achieve this, we require an e-Science paradigm of studying particle physics anytime anywhere. One of the components for establishing this paradigm is a remote control room for data acquisition (DAQ). We developed and embedded a remote control room at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI). Since then, we have been adopting on/offline shifts for conducting collider experiments at KISTI, that is, the experiments are done even when we are not on-site. In this paper, we introduce our experience of our remote control room for both CDF and Belle II experiments. This remote control room includes international networks, security, DAQ systems, data transfers, and monitoring systems. We also presented the results of the shifts done in the remote control room at KISTI.

3. Analysis of risk propagation using the world trade network.
PMID:日期:2022-08-18An economic system is an exemplar of a complex system in which all agents interact simultaneously. Interactions between countries have generally been studied using the flow of resources across diverse trade networks, in which the degree of dependence between two countries is typically measured based on the trade volume. However, indirect influences may not be immediately apparent. Herein, we compared a direct trade network to a trade network constructed using the personalized PageRank (PPR) encompassing indirect influences. By analyzing the correlation of the gross domestic product (GDP) between countries, we discovered that the PPR trade network has greater explanatory power on the propagation of economic events than direct trade by analyzing the GDP correlation between countries. To further validate our observations, an agent-based model of the spreading economic crisis was implemented for the Russia-Ukraine war of 2022. The model also demonstrates that the PPR explains the actual impact more effectively than the direct trade network. Our research highlights the significance of indirect and long-range relationships, which have often been overlooked.

4. Modeling of radiation effects to immune system: a review.
PMID:日期:2022-08-08Cancer metastasis is the major cause of cancer mortality and accounts for about 90% of cancer death. Although radiation therapy has been considered to reduce the localized cancer burden, emerging evidence that radiation can potentially turn tumors into an in situ vaccine has raised significant interest in combining radiation with immunotherapy. However, the combination approach might be limited by the radiation-induced immunosuppression. Assessment of radiation effects on the immune system at the patient level is critical to maximize the systemic antitumor response of radiation. In this review, we summarize the developed solutions in three different categories for systemic radiation therapy: blood dose, radiation-induced lymphopenia, and tumor control. Furthermore, we address how they could be combined to optimize radiotherapy regimens and maximize their synergy with immunotherapy.

5. No-exclaves percolation.
PMID:日期:2022-07-25Network robustness has been a pivotal issue in the study of system failure in network science since its inception. To shed light on this subject, we introduce and study a new percolation process based on a new cluster called an 'exclave' cluster. The entities comprising exclave clusters in a network are the sets of connected unfailed nodes that are completely surrounded by the failed (i.e., nonfunctional) nodes. The exclave clusters are thus detached from other unfailed parts of the network, thereby becoming effectively nonfunctional. This process defines a new class of clusters of nonfunctional nodes. We call it the no-exclave percolation cluster (NExP cluster), formed by the connected union of failed clusters and the exclave clusters they enclose. Here we showcase the effect of NExP cluster, suggesting a wide and disruptive collapse in two empirical infrastructure networks. We also study on two-dimensional Euclidean lattice to analyze the phase transition behavior using finite-size scaling. The NExP model considering the collective failure clusters uncovers new aspects of network collapse as a percolation process, such as quantitative change of transition point and qualitative change of transition type. Our study discloses hidden indirect damage added to the damage directly from attacks, and thus suggests a new useful way for finding nonfunctioning areas in complex systems under external perturbations as well as internal partial closures.

6. Plasma bioscience for medicine, agriculture and hygiene applications.
PMID:日期:2022-03-04Nonthermal biocompatible plasma (NBP) sources operating in atmospheric pressure environments and their characteristics can be used for plasma bioscience, medicine, and hygiene applications, especially for COVID-19 and citizen. This review surveyed the various NBP sources, including a plasma jet, micro-DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) and nanosecond discharged plasma. The electron temperatures and the plasma densities, which are produced using dielectric barrier discharged electrode systems, can be characterized as 0.7 ~ 1.8 eV and (3-5) × 10 cm, respectively. Herein, we introduce a general schematic view of the plasma ultraviolet photolysis of water molecules for reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) generation inside biological cells or living tissues, which would be synergistically important with RONS diffusive propagation into cells or tissues. Of the RONS, the hydroxyl radical [OH] and hydrogen peroxide HO species would mainly result in apoptotic cell death with other RONS in plasma bioscience and medicines. The diseased biological protein, cancer, and mutated cells could be treated by using a NBP or plasma activated water (PAW) resulting in their apoptosis for a new paradigm of plasma medicine.

7. Multifractal analysis of social media use in financial markets.
PMID:日期:2022-02-25We analyze the nonlinear properties of social media activity(SMA) using the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) method. Social media data related to the stock market are gathered from social media platforms. Using data on over 2000 firms in the Korean stock market for 2018-2020, we study social media activity and its differences to evaluate associated nonlinear and statistical properties. We find that the cumulative distribution function of SMA follows a stretched exponential distribution with . The Hurst exponent of SMA for three datasets (2018, 2019, 2020 year) is larger than 0.9, whereas the Hurst exponents of shuffled time series have values of approximately 0.5. In particular, we find a multifractal structure in both SMA and SMA difference results irrespective of the period and degree of multifractality defined as , which reaches a maximum value during the COVID-19 pandemic as a financial crisis.

9. Spatiotemporal behaviors of the ridership of a public transportation system during an epidemic outbreak: case of MERS in Seoul.
PMID:日期:2021-10-25During May and June 2015, an outbreak of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) occurred in Korea, which raised the fear of contagion throughout society and suppressed the use of public transportation systems. Exploring daily ridership data of the Seoul bus transportation system, along with the number of infected patients and search volume in web portals, we observe that ridership decreased abruptly while attention was heavily focused online. Then this temporal reduction recovered exponentially with a characteristic time of 3 weeks when newly confirmed cases began to decrease. We also find with the data of ranked keywords of web portals that areas with severely reduced ridership tended to cluster and spatiotemporal variations of such clusters were highly associated with general hospitals where MERS patients were treated. On the other hand, the spatial reduction in ridership relaxed algebraically with the distance from a general hospital while the outbreak was severe. We further probe the influence of the epidemic outbreak in the framework of linear response theory, which relates the responses to the epidemic outbreak ("perturbation") with correlations in the absence of the perturbation. Indeed, the spatial correlation function of the ridership changes is observed to follow a power law, sharing the same exponent as the spatial relaxation of the response function. This new theoretical approach offers a useful tool for understanding responses of public transportation system to epidemic or accidental disasters.

10. Estimate of the critical exposure time based on 70 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
PMID:日期:2021-06-18The transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurs via contact with contaminated surfaces and inhalation of large airborne droplets and aerosols. As growing evidence of airborne SARS-CoV-2 transmission has been reported worldwide, ventilation is an effective method of reducing the infection probability of SARS-CoV-2. This leads to such questions as "What is a sufficient ventilation rate for avoiding the risk of COVID-19 infection?" Therefore, this study evaluates the critical ventilation rates according to room size and exposure time when a susceptible person is in the same room as an infector. The analytical results were based on data obtained from 70 confirmed COVID-19 cases transmitted in confined spaces without an operational ventilation system. The results reveal that even with active ventilation (20 h air exchange rate), the critical exposure time for a susceptible person with a COVID-19 infector in a small space of 20 m is less than 1 h. For other cases (different space sizes), the estimated air exchange rates for avoiding the risk of infection are generally higher than various requirements for good indoor air quality. The findings of this study will provide guidelines for determining sufficient ventilation rates to protect against the highly contagious COVID-19.
