1. Evaluation of the protective effects of green tea for ischemia-reperfusion injury in rat ovary tissue: an experimental study.
PMID:日期:2026-09-21To investigate the protective effects of green tea extract on ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat model using histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. Twenty-one female Wistar-Albino rats were randomly divided into three groups (n = 7 each): sham, saline-treated ischemia-reperfusion, and green tea extract-treated ischemia-reperfusion. Ovarian torsion was induced by 720° clockwise rotation of the adnexa for three hours, followed by three hours of reperfusion. Green tea extract (200 mg/kg) or saline was administered intraperitoneally immediately before reperfusion. Ovarian tissues were evaluated histopathologically for congestion, hemorrhage, edema, polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration, and follicular degeneration. Bax and caspase-3 expression levels were assessed immunohistochemically. The saline group demonstrated significantly increased congestion, edema, follicular degeneration, and total injury scores compared with the sham group. Green tea extract administration significantly reduced congestion, edema, and follicular degeneration compared with the saline group, indicating partial histopathological protection against ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury. However, Bax and caspase immunoreactivity remained elevated in the treatment group. Green tea extract attenuated histopathological ovarian damage following ischemia-reperfusion injury, suggesting a protective effect against ovarian tissue injury. Although treatment was associated with increased expression of apoptotic markers, the overall findings support the potential of green tea-derived antioxidants as a therapeutic strategy for ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury.

2. Effectiveness of negative-pressure wound therapy in partial-thickness and full-thickness burns: a systematic review.
PMID:日期:2026-09-11To evaluate the effectiveness of negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in healing partial- and full-thickness burns in humans. This systematic review followed the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the PRISMA checklist. Eight studies published between 2014 and 2024 were included, involving 466 patients with partial- and full-thickness burns. The sample comprised five randomized controlled trials, two retrospective observational studies, and one prospective cohort study. NPWT was applied in continuous or intermittent modes, with pressures ranging from 40 to 125 mmHg. The most frequently assessed outcome was re-epithelialization time, with NPWT superiority reported in three studies. NPWT was also associated with greater reduction in wound area and bacterial load. Additional outcomes included pain, graft integration, and scar quality, as well as logistical advantages such as reduced dressing change frequency. NPWT provides benefits in burn treatment, including reduction of wound area, bacterial count, and re-epithelialization time, along with effectiveness in graft integration and healing quality. Despite limitations, such as application difficulties and prolonged treatment in pediatric patients, NPWT stands out for decreasing dressing changes, improving care logistics and psychological well-being.

3. Normothermic machine perfusion versus static cold storage for liver transplantation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
PMID:日期:2026-09-11To compare the effectiveness of normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) with static cold storage (SCS) in preserving transplantable livers, focusing on early postoperative complications. A PRISMA 2020-compliant search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Web of Science identified comparative studies of NMP versus SCS. Five studies met the criteria (two randomized controlled trials, and three observational cohorts; 630 recipients). Random-effects meta-analysis was performed in RStudio, reporting risk ratio (RR), 95% confidence interval (95%CI), p-value and heterogeneity (I2). NMP significantly lowered the incidence of composite early postoperative complications versus SCS (RR = 0.60; 95%CI 0.47-0.75; p < 0.0001), corresponding to a 40% relative risk reduction. Between-study heterogeneity was negligible (I2 = 0 %). Subgroup analyses revealed no significant effect modification by study design (p = 0.75), donation after circulatory death proportion (p = 0.91), preservation duration (p = 0.51), donor age (p = 0.59) or perfusion technique (p = 0.37). NMP demonstrates clinically superior graft preservation compared with SCS, consistently reducing early complications after liver transplantation. Adoption of NMP may expand the use of marginal organs and improve post-transplant outcomes.

4. Evaluation of polymeric films and streptokinase for prevention of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesion in rabbits.
PMID:日期:2026-09-11To evaluate the effectiveness of polymer-based strategies for preventing intra-abdominal adhesions after small colon enterotomy and enterorrhaphy in a rabbit experimental model. Twenty-four female New Zealand White rabbits were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 6): film composed of a blend of sodium carboxymethylcellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (NaCMC-PVA); NaCMC-PVA-streptokinase (STP) film; intra-abdominal STP infusion; and no treatment. Hematological parameters were assessed preoperatively and at three and seven days postoperatively. Macroscopic evaluation of intra-abdominal adhesions and histopathological analysis of the enterorrhaphy site were performed on postoperative day 7. Results were compared within and between experimental groups. Treated groups exhibited fewer hematological alterations compared with the control group. No statistically significant differences were observed among groups regarding adhesion severity or histopathological scores (p> 0.05). The NaCMC-PVA film showed the lowest absolute incidence of adhesions and did not impair intestinal remesothelialization. Based on the biological findings from this study, the NaCMC-PVA film exhibited acceptable handling characteristics and biological compatibility. These findings suggest its potential as a mechanical barrier for preventing abdominal adhesion. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are required to confirm its effectiveness.

5. The thesis defense as an academic rite: a call for institutional standards of conduct and excellence in postgraduate programs.
PMID:日期:2026-09-11The public defense of a master's dissertation or doctoral thesis is a defining moment in postgraduate education. It represents both an academic evaluation and a ceremony that marks the transition of a researcher into an independent scientific career. Yet in many postgraduate programs, the conduct expected of candidates, examiners, and the audience during these proceedings remains largely unwritten, transmitted informally from one generation to the next. We argue that this absence of codified standards carries real consequences for the quality and fairness of the evaluation process. Drawing on the experience of a Brazilian surgical postgraduate program and on the international literature on doctoral defense formats, we propose that institutions should develop explicit, written guidelines covering the responsibilities of all participants in the defense ceremony. Such guidelines would strengthen the evaluative rigor of the defense, protect candidates from avoidable failures of process, and reinforce the institutional culture of academic excellence that distinguishes high-quality postgraduate programs.

6. Investigation of the effects of hydroxychloroquine on rats with pulmonary contusion caused by blunt thoracic trauma.
PMID:日期:2026-08-14To investigate the early and late effects of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) on inflammation, fibrosis, and apoptosis in an experimental rat model of pulmonary contusion. Thirty-five male Wistar albino rats were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 7): control, pulmonary contusion evaluated on day 3 or day 10 (PC-3 and PC-10), and pulmonary contusion treated with HCQ at 100 mg/kg/day by gavage and evaluated on day 3 or day 10 (PCHCQ-3 and PCHCQ-10). Lung injury was assessed histopathologically by alveolar edema, congestion, leukocyte infiltration, and fibrosis scores and immunohistochemically by caspase-3, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression. No alveolar edema was observed. Congestion and leukocyte infiltration were significantly greater in all contusion groups than in the control group. Fibrotic changes were detected on day 10 in both treated and untreated contusion groups. Caspase-3 and iNOS expression were significantly higher in the contusion groups than in the control group. HCQ did not significantly reduce leukocyte infiltration, fibrosis, apoptosis, or iNOS expression compared with the corresponding untreated groups. HCQ administered at 100 mg/kg/day for three or 10 days did not demonstrate significant anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, or antifibrotic effects in this rat model of pulmonary contusion.

7. Application of melamine-starch and bixin film (Bixa orellana L.) in wound healing.
PMID:日期:2026-08-14To evaluate through histological analysis the application of starch-melamine film and bixin (Bixa orellana L.) in wound healing in Wistar rats. Eighteen male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 6 per group): Group 1 (control), cutaneous wound without topical treatment; Group 2, cutaneous wound treated with a bixin-free film; and Group 3, cutaneous wound treated with a film containing bixin. Wound healing progression was monitored by photographic documentation and histological analysis on postoperative days 3, 7, and 14. At the end of three days, the three groups showed similar histological aspects with incipient re-epithelialization and edematous extracellular matrix (ECM). After seven days, the edema decreased, and the ECM appeared much more compact. After 14 days, the newly formed epidermis extended toward the wound center, but re-epithelialization was not complete in any group. Fibroblast proliferation and maturation were accentuated in all three groups. Group 3 (bixin group) exhibited wounds with a dense matrix, increased collagen deposition, and a minimal inflammatory cell infiltrate. The starch-melamine composite associated with bixin demonstrated potential to enhance tissue repair and modulate the inflammatory response.

8. Investigation of the effects of nicotinamide mononucleotide on kidney damage in rats with cecal ligation and perforation sepsis model.
PMID:日期:2026-08-07To evaluate the protective effects of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a NAD+ precursor, on kidney tissue in rats with sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture model. In this study, 28 female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into four equal groups: control, sham, sepsis, and sepsis+NMN (500 mg/kg, i.p.). Kidney tissues taken 24 hours after the sepsis model were histopathologically evaluated under light microscopy for tubular damage, glomerular congestion, and inflammatory infiltration parameters. Histopathological examination revealed severe tubular injury, marked glomerular congestion, and dense inflammatory cell infiltration in the kidney tissues of the sepsis group. In the group treated with NMN, a significant reduction in these pathological findings was observed, while the glomerular structure and tubular architecture were preserved. Semi-quantitative histopathological scoring confirmed significantly increased renal injury in the sepsis group and significant attenuation of tissue damage following NMN treatment. The data obtained showed that NMN may play an important cytoprotective role in sepsis-induced acute kidney injury by preserving tissue architecture. More comprehensive molecular and biochemical studies are needed to fully elucidate the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of action of NMN.

9. Lower content of cerebrospinal fluid chemokines in patients with cancer cachexia.
PMID:日期:2026-08-03Cancer-associated cachexia (CC) is characterized by involuntary weight loss and poor prognosis. Central nervous system (CNS) inflammation has been linked to CC symptoms. This study evaluated inflammatory mediators in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with CC. Volunteers were recruited in Santarém, PA, Brazil, and divided into three groups: patients undergoing herniorrhaphy or cholecystectomy (n = 43)-control; cancer without cachexia (CWC, n = 13); and CC (n = 49). Blood and CSF were collected before anesthetic injection. CSF vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels were reduced in CC (p < 0.0001; p 0.00017) and CWC (p = 0.0269; p = 0.0421) compared to control. CSF IP-10 was lower in CC (p = 0.0048). In CWC, CSF MCP-1 correlated with serum C reactive protein (rs = 0.78, p = 0.0098), leukocytes (rs = 0.72, p = 0.0235), lymphocytes (rs = -0.67, p = 0.0390) and monocytes (rs = -0.82, p = 0.0058). In CC, CSF interleukin (IL)-8 correlated with leukocytes (rs = 0.48, p = 0.0032) and MCP-1 with neutrophils (rs = 0.36, p = 0.0265) and eosinophils (rs = -0.37, p = 0.0218). CC patients showed lower quality of life than CWC (functional scale p = 0.0087; symptoms scale p = 0.0386). Cancer was related to changes in CSF cytokine levels, indicating that both tumor presence and cachexia modulate central inflammatory signaling. Correlations between CSF chemokines and blood immune cells suggest systemic interaction between peripheral immunity and the CNS.

10. Augmented reality in clinical skills simulation: usability and feasibility of smart glasses in a simulated environment.
PMID:日期:2026-08-03To assess the usability and feasibility of augmented-reality smart glasses during simulated pediatric bladder catheterization with real-time remote specialist guidance. Thirty-five critical-care graduate healthcare professionals simulated pediatric bladder catheterization on a manikin using Vuzix M400 glasses via telemedicine. After brief familiarization, participants completed a seven-item Likert (0-7) questionnaire covering ease of use, procedural understanding, confidence/efficiency, comfort, and global acceptance. We analyzed descriptive statistics, internal consistency (Cronbach's α), and item-domain coherence. A conceptual diagram and synthesis table complemented quantitative data. Augmented-reality-guided training showed generally favorable usability perceptions. Median scores ranged 3.5-5, with strongest ratings for observation support, image quality, procedural understanding, and intention to recommend. Comfort and efficiency scored lower (median = 3.5), indicating more neutral perceptions. The instrument showed high internal consistency (α = 0.97), although this may reflect item redundancy, and item-domain alignment provided a descriptive representation of the conceptual model. These findings suggest that augmented-reality smart glasses are feasible and generally well accepted for simulated remotely guided training. Further controlled studies with objective performance measures are needed.
